    1. [ARDREW-L] POWELL/HANKINS/MEREDITH
    2. Looking for information on Lillian Vera Hankins, Lillian Vera Powell, Lillian Vera Merideth (all same person). Her marriage to (John?) Powell was probably between 1900 and 1909. Her marriage to (John?) Meredith was later than 1909. Thanks, Matt

    3. Melissa, On the 1910 census all it has is Joseph Burrough, white, male, age 9, and ed.yes,yes,yes. That is all. He was a very small man so I'm not real sure on the age.Yes I have looked in Ar. on the 1900 cencus and found nothing, but I can't get the 1920 here at our lib. or at least they did not have them the last time I was there.I know in 1929 he was in Caraway Ar. married to my grandmother. I found his brother in Union Cty 1910 census with the family as Willie Burrow in the home of Alex Morrison white, male,13 adpt son,he was born in Ar.parents unknown, farm worker and Ed.yes,yes,yes.My grandfatherwent by Joe Burrough all his life here in Ar.I know and would not talk about his past sayong that if he had family that would let him be raised as he was he did not want to know them and the family did not even know he had a brother until 1947 when he recieved a letter fron the Morrisons saying they were putting him in the State home in Little Rock if he wanted him.Needless to say he had a family of his own then and wanted to make sure his brother would not do harm to them so he took a nurse with him and they went to L.R. and they brought him back with them.He was in very bad shape mentally and physically. He would not stay in the house with them or even eat in the house with them so they built him a little one room house out back and he eat on a built in back porch they ! had on the house.I only time I can remember seeing his go in the house was when he got a hair cut and he had to come in to do that as my grandmothers brother was a barbar and he would come to there and give him that.He went no where. It was like he had never been allowed to live a normal life with other people. He and grandpa died the same year 1958.grandpa went first and Will went soon after. All I can get from family is their mother was said to be a very pretty Indian womman and their father was to have been killed in a accident and they were taken from their mother to never see each other or thier mother again.I have up ward I just need anything I can get back.I have checked the schools in both place and they burned. The orph home would give me nothing in Aug. when I was down there. In the courthouse they had nothing on Will at all except where his land and iol right were sold off and he was past from person to person for guardianship and all of that was in the 1920s nothing bef! ore that and His name was spelled Will,Willie, William and Burrow at one time owned buy Alex Morrison so he had given it to Uncle Will at some time.I went to L.R and looked for old new papers from 1900 to 1910 trying to find when a Indian woman had her children taken from her or a death from a oil or lumber accident of any kind in Union cty,but again found nothing.Story is they were passing through El Dorado in a wagon and were put in jail and the kids were taken from her there, but I couldn't find and thing on any jail (court)records in the court house when I was in El Dorado either times.I did find a lady that was kin to the Prim family in El Dorado who said she could remember her grandparents taking 2 boys and 3 girls out of the home and had to take all but one back and that one was my grandfather and he stayed with them until he came to Caraway. The man had died by then if I understood her right, she was very old and had a hard time talking to me.She was not even up to haveing me come out to see her.I had to talk to her over the phone. She! gave me the name of someone else in Camdon that was a son of the Prim, but he was old and from a first marriage and could not tell me anything either.I have sent out about 80 letters from addresses on the net out all the names and got a lot of them back because of bad address, and some bad phone calls not very happy that I had gotten there address and a couple of very nice letters back saying they could not help me.And to the bet of my knowledge I have looked every place I know how with what I have to go on,but I keep trying and hoping. Thanks for your time and any inf. me might have that would help me or teach me where to look either. Linda, let's see if we can help you out. I know you have been looking for your grandfather for a long time. Which chronological direction are you trying to go (i.e., forwards, towards the present time, or backwards, to try to pick up his parents & siblings, etc.)? Let's start with what you gathered from the 1910 census. Was your grandfather listed as being in the Baptist home at that time (I'm guessing yes). How old was he? Where was he born? Does he know his mother's and father's places of birth? All these questions were asked in the 1910 census; we all just have to hope that our ancestors were able to answer the questions! Now, with the information you have, have you tried looking in the 1900 or 1920 census? How old would your grandfather have been in each of these? Have you tried the SOUNDEX system in 1910 and 1920 to look for Joe Burrough? The SOUNDEX code would lump all the different spellings of Burrough/Burrow/etc. into one index. If you know his age in 1900 and/or 1920, and you know what state he was probably in, you ought to be able to find him in the SOUNDEX. Please let us know what type of information you are looking for, and we will do our best to help. --Melissa

    3. There are, or were, two homes for orphans in Monticello. The Bottoms Baptist Orphanage is still in operation as the Arkansas Baptist Home for Children. The mailing address is P O Box 108, Monticello, AR 71655. There was a Day Care Center founded in 1910 by the United Charities of Monticello; it became the Presbyterian Home in 1923. Unfortunately, the records from these institutions were lost in a fire in 1935. Which are you interested in? If it's the Baptist home, I may be able to help you. My maternal grandmother was there for a time early in this century. Unfortunately, a lot of my research notes were boxed up and put into storage by mistake the last time we moved and I still haven't found all of them. Some time back, though, I found a book about the history of Drew County in my local library, and I remember that it contained information about the Home. If it's the Baptist home you're interested in, let me know, and give me an idea of what you're trying to find out. I'll see if I can track it down for you.
