    1. [ARDREW-L] new list at Rootsweb: OLD-WORDS
    2. Melissa Jones
    3. Hi, everyone, Here is a new mailing list at Rootsweb that I thought some of you might be interested in. Instructions for how to join are given at the end of the message. Enjoy! --Melissa What is Old-Words? It's a forum for those of us who want to learn more about the words, names, terms, dialects, and writing of our ancestors. The emphasis of the list will deal, but not exclusively, with the use of English in North America before 1950....but some times we may drag in terms from older English as they are relevant and interesting. We will cover technical terminology of eras past, old medical jargon, old manuscript abbreviations, information about old writing conventions like the long s, spelling evolution, name preferences and patterns, the effect of dialect on spelling and word choice, and anything else about word usage that we may find useful and interesting in the pursuit of gaining knowledge about the language of our ancestors. This is to help us read old manuscripts better, to broaden our minds, and to help us understand our forefathers and mothers better. To join, send e-mail based on your choice of list modes: mail mode: OLD-WORDS-L-request@rootsweb.com with message SUBSCRIBE digest mode: OLD-WORDS-D-request@rootsweb.com with message SUBSCRIBE

    3. Courtney.......There were several Courtneys that intermarried into the Oneal and Horn families in tbe Prairie Chapel area east of Lacey. Mrs. Hettie Nell Horn can probably striaghten these out if anyone can. Her husband Shelby was the son or grandson (I think) of one of these, and they were all in the Oneals....I even think one married into the Thurman clan. I'd have to do some checking. Also, some courtneys lived in th e eastern portion of the county down around the Jordan settlement and towards Old Troy and Wolf Creek. Lots of Courtneys used to be in Drew Co. 3. I just thought of the little school district across from Moro Bay.....It is called OLD UNION. It's about 10 to l5 miles away from Eldorado. It's probably about the same distance from the river. Anyway, this was my impression of where Champagnolle was located, but rdea probably knows better than I. 3. >help me with. I'm trying to find out where Champagnolle, Ark. was. According to my Uncle J.D. Wolfe, it was where the land patent office was in Union Co. just across the river from Moro Bay. Now, I could be wrong, but this is where he seemed to think it was....I'm trying to think of the little rural school just across the way on the Moro Bay Hwy. going in to Eldorado, but I got the impression that it was somewhere around there.

Judy, you are a typical sister correcting her older brother, but go back and look at his note. He specifically mentioned that the NEW steeple of the Baptist church was completely blown away. We'll excuse this though because I love the stories and hope that Judy will share some of her neat reminiscenses ?sp of her early days at Drew Central. I have a sneaky suspicion that Robert and she are both story-tellers at heart as are many of you on the list. (She keeps me straight at D.C., too, or at least most of the time.) I love these old stories. I never knew what had happened to Mr. Ballard and that was very interesting. Once again, I only thought that there had been that one minor tornado out by the college. The next time a dark cloud comes I'm not going to feel nearly as safe if I am in Monticello as I did this past week. Here I was thinking that since we were the epitome of the Italian Monticello meaning of "nestled in the hills' that we were all safe from such activity and that it was only places , such as Warren and Hamburg, which have both been hit hard twice, that had to worry. 3. I am not positive, but I think there is nothing left. I think it fell into the river eventually. Hopefully, the cemetery is there. I think all it is now is a landing name. to go there, from Calion, go on down the levee. Rebecca > > Campagnolle is now a very small town, I've never been there and only seen > the name on a map. 3. Campagnolle is now a very small town, I've never been there and only seen the name on a map. It is NE of El Dorado and just south of Calion. I ran across it because the federal land office was located there when my g-grandfather obtained Drew County land in 1858 under a Cash Entry Patent and this town is listed as the land office. 1. Re: [ARDREW-L] Locations of Latonia and Champagnolle
    2. rdea
    3. Good question, Lee. Champagnolle is in Union County on the Ouachita River. Section 23, Township 16 South, Range 14 West. It is one of the most historic places in the county. On old land plats is spelled Champagnole [1818-45]. The name was in use as early as 1805 {Dunbar & Hunter exploration}. In 1784 Pierre Cuvillier dit Champignolle obtained a license from Juan Filhiol of the post of Ouachita to operate a tavern at Ecore a Fabre [the old name for Camden]. The town was the office for the land agent, Territory of Arkansas. Everyone had to go there to register their land patents, etc. At one time it was a steamboat [and even earlier, keelboat] landing, a settled community with a cemetery. Latonia was a post office in Ashley County. Opened Sept 22, 1858, with Solomon Hundley postmaster. closed Feb 11, 1867. I do not have location, but think it may have been south of Hamburg. Will have this info by next week, if you will repost me a reminder. best regards, Rebecca DeArmond rdea@seark.net www.seark.net/~rdea/ www.seark.net/~history/ I'm trying to find out where Champagnolle, Ark. was.
