Jann, I'm still trying to help you find the woman who was killed in the train accident, but can tell you that the spelling of the Doctor's name was incorrect...so the woman's probably was also. The Doctor would have been Dr. Edward Ralph COTHAM. Carolyn
Ark. Gazette Dec. 5, 1897: Monticello, Dec. 4 - William Biggs living twelve miles southwest of this city, started to church with his wife and baby in the wagon. The team ran away and all were thrown out of the wagon. The baby was killed outright and the wife fatally wounded.
I'm trying to figure out who this lady was. I don't find a listing for her in either the Bradley or Drew County cemetery records. I wonder if perhaps the name is "Curry", but have no proof of that. If anyone knows about this lady please let me know. And also, what was a "journal"? October 19, 1921: Monticello, Oct. 18 Mrs. M. A. R. Culley, aged about 80, was killed here when she fell under the wheels of a Missouri Pacific train at the railway station this morning. She was returning to her home here from Warren, where she had been visiting relatives. After alighting from the train, she found she had forgotten a package, and went back into the coach. The train had started when she attempted to alight the second time. She fell between the curb and the track, and a journal struck her on the chest and knocked her beneath the coach. Jack Mobley, well known oil man, standing nearby pulled her from under the coach before her body was ground to pieces. The aged woman was taken to the office of Dr. E. R. Cothern, where she died a short time later.
August 6, 1890: Monticello, Aug 5 - The veterans of the famous old Third Arkansas were greeted with every demonstration of welcome on their arrival yesterday. As the afternoon train swept into the depot a glittering pageant met the eye, and cheered the old soldiers; long lines of carriages were drawn up, which were profusely decorated with flags and mottoes expressive of happy greeting to one and all. The platform was crowded with citizens in holiday attire, whose faces beamed with delight and expection of meeting with friends and comrades, many of whom had never met since the gloomy hour when they flung their muskets down. When their bonnie flag was furled, after being transferred to carriages, the procession turned toward town, headed by a band of music, which discourse National airs, the whole assemblage resembling some triumphant procession of bygone days. Yet while memories of the past sweep like surging billows over each soldier's heart, a prayer on each lip arises, and the words ! of the sweet sonster, Father, Ryan, is echoed in every heart: "No, no! the past is past, May it never come again' May no dream or bugle's blast Summon warriiors to the plain." Last night the town was brilliant with hundreds of transparencies, and the whole business portion is gay with bunting, over which the flag of the Union proudly waves. The Committee of Arrangements have arranged for a picnic on the fair grounds today. Many visitors are here and a grand jubilee is expected.
Arkansas Gazette Aug. 3, 1897: Monticello, Aug. 2 - On last evening at the Orphans' Home at this place, Miss Hannah Hyatt and Mr. Eddie Gardner were married by Rev. W. W. Gardner, father of the groom. Miss Hyatt is a sister of R. F. Hyatt, cashier of the Monticello Bank and manager of the Orphans' Home. [Have any of you heard of the poem "The Angel of Desha"? Supposedly the Angel of Desha was written about or in memory of all the folks in Desha Co. that suffered from malaria. It was printed in the AR Gazette 1891]
Hello Friends, I have a picture, probably taken about 1945 or so, of two young ladies sitting on a bicycle. These ladies look to be in their late teens or early twenties. On the back of the photo are the names Blanche Nelson and Wanda Parker. Does anyone know either of these individuals? They probably would have lived near the Tillar area but I really don't know for sure. I found them in my mother's things after her death and believe them to be old friends of hers. Thank you for any help or suggestions, Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net

Hi, there, I found John P. WOMACK on a federal land record for Jan. 15, 1858, buying land in Drew County at 35-11S-5W 0. I think this was near the Montongo area northwest of Monticello. What puzzles me is that I can't find John on the 1860, 1870, or 1880 census. (I don't have acces to the 1850 census) I also checked Lincoln County. I think John P. may be related to my known GG GF, Alexander WOMACK,(may be Alexander William or William Alexander) on the 1870 Drew co census, with wife, Mary and daughter, Willie, age 1. Thanks a lot for any help. Bill Brown...Richardson, Texas
Does anyone know what cemeteries would have been used between 1850 and 1860 in or near Bartholomew, Drew Co., AR. I would also like to know if the Drew Co., AR Cemeteries have been surveyed and if there these survey's have been published. Kathleen Burnett
In the 1850 Census of Drew Co., AR in the township of Bartholomew FM # 228 there is an Eli Stone age 34 and wife Elizabeth age 27. Living in the household along with their children is a Jane Denton age 80 b. SC. I think the wife Elizabeth is Elizabeth Denton who married an Eli Stone 17 Jul 1839 in Marshall Co., MS. Does anyone know who Jane Denton is???? Kathleen Burnett
Is anyone on this list researching a Shipman DENTON b. 1804 in TN who was living in Drew Co., AR in 1850? If so, I would love to connect with you. Kathleen Burnett
Monticello, Dec. 8 - Deputy Sheriff John Law of Ashley county arrived here yesterday from Texas, with a prisoner by the name of Drake. He escaped from Hamburg jail three or four years ago, when he was on trial for bigamy. The jury had convicted him, but before sentence had been pronounced he took "French leave" of the town and the officers have not been able to locate him until quite recently, when Sheriff Law went in pursuit and effected his capture. Drake will be retained here for safe-keeping until court convenes. The sheriff says that if Drake had not been apprehended in a few days he would have added another to his list of wives. Mr. Clint Biggs, a farmer living near here, fell from his wagon, which was heavily loaded with brick, and had one of his legs broken in two places by the wheels passing over him. Dr. Loper was called in to set the limb and pronounces the break quite a serious one, as the man is quite old. The dry goods house of G. B. Simms, colored, was closed for debt a few days since. Liabilities about $400. Rev. E. N. Evans, pastor of the Methodist church of this place for the ensuing year, preached on last Sabbath to a large and appreciative audience.
I just saw at www.ftm2006.com <http://www.ftm2006.com/> the new version of Family Tree Maker. Does anyone have this program yet that can tell me if it is worth upgrading from 2005? Brian
Not sure this went through the first time. Our son Kiran was born July 7 and is a true blessing to us. We have been hoping and waiting for him for many years. Kiran weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20 inches long. He's a lean one! Just wanted to let you all know! --Melissa
A Loveless reunion has been scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend in Monticello. (Probably just one day, Saturday) A definite site has not been determined, nor has any details been worked out. This reunion would include everyone who is in the Loveless ancestry line and friends. Hopefully the extended cousins can meet and get to know their relatives. Please notify everyone in your immediate family of this date. We need everyones input and help to make this a memorable experience. More info and plans to come later. Bobbie Lehman
Brian, Good to hear from you again. I made a mistake in my query. Mary Jane Burton married George W. (Washington) Nichols rather than George E. Nichols. Do you have anything on him? Also, Catherine Nichols who married John Chandler was married at the residence of one Martha D. Nichols in the Clear Creek Tp. Do any of those names appear in your records? I have just started a website at www.genealogyclassifieds.com and would like to see if anyone wanted to list any old genealogy books or publications here. Its free and hopefully someone may have a book of society magazine someone else needs as well as putting some of the original cost you incurred back into your own pocket for new genealogical books or publications purchases. FYI, I started this because there are a lot of out of print books I am looking for and cant find anywhere to get them. Hopefully this will help me as well as some others in the process. Brian Nichols

I know some of you know of Mrs. Lillian from the Rock Springs area, she had been a rock of genealogical info for the Rock Springs Community. I am sad to report that she passed away on June 19th and was buried on the 22nd. She will be missed by all who knew her.... Brian Nichols www.nicholsgenealogy.net
