There is a Mabel Dickson Hart buried in the Old Saline also called Allis Cemetery. She was born 1880 and died 1913. That's all that's on her stone but those dates aren't the ones you have. There is no Vernon or Mary Hart in any cemetery in Drew Co. There is a J. B. Beckwith in Green Hill Cemetery but it says "small stone, no dates". The paper in Monticello is the Advance Monticellonian but they had a fire at one time and all the records were burned which is just a shame but you might try them anyway.
Dear Bill: For info on the KKK in Drew and Lincoln counties (and others) in Arkansas during this period, I found these two books a great help: Jeannie M. Whayne, et al., Arkansas: A Narrative History. (Fayetteville: The University of Arkansas Press, 2002) Allen W. Trelease, White Terror: The Ku Klux Klan Conspiracy and Southern Reconstruction. Supposedly, my great great uncle, Thomas Lafayette Brown Jr. was killed in a gun battle near Tyro, Lincoln Co, Ark. on March 25, 1890 at age 28. One version of the story is that a man was under guard by a sheriff's deputy in the man's house near Tyro...that Klansmen showed up late at night, then shot and killed the deputy and the man under guard. I don't know if Thomas may have been the deputy or the man under guard in his house. I also have no idea what triggered the killings, if they did happen. I do know that Thomas left behind a widow, Frances "Fannie" Lay and two young sons, Thomas, Jr. and Charles Andrew Brown. Thomas Jr. married Annie Wilkins and 2nd married Velma Atkinson, all buried in Tyro cemetery. Charles Andrew went to Pine Bluf and married Inez _______. One interesting note: Annie Wilkins was related to Andrew "Andy" Wilkins. A story handed down says, in the Tyro area, Andy got into a fight with some men, possibly Klansmen, shot and killed three of them, and survived. Many thanks for any help proving any of this. Monticello Jan. 30 1902 - On last Thursday night two sons of a colored man by the name of Fieling Ragland, living on Mr. Jack Cowan's place, about nine miles south of Monticello, took their father's rifle and went out in the yard to watch for an own that had been catching chickens. Some time during their vigil the rifle was carelessly handled, causing it to go off, killing the younger of the two. The range was so close that the boy's head was blown to atoms. The killing was purely accidental. July 10, 1907, Little Rock - The body of Mrs. M. S. Jordan, who died Monday afternoon at 721 West Tenth Street, was sent yesterday morning to Monticello for burial. No services were held here. She was 79 years of age. July 25, 1907, Wilmar - Robert Fletcher, a negro farmer living three miles southwest of Wilmar killed a white coon in his corn field last Friday morning. It was pure white and had no signs of any rings anywhere on its hairy coat. Fletcher says he wishes he had kept the animal alive, for he knows if he had sent it to President Roosevelt he would have given him $1,000 for it.
AR Gazette June 2, 1900; Wilmar, Ark., May 31 - The commencement exercises of the Drew Normal Institute were held here from May 25 to 29. The exercises Friday evening consisted of two contests in elocution. In the young men's contest Mr. Walter Nelson of Nelson, Ark., won the medal. Messrs. In the young ladies' contest Miss May Hart of Monticello was awarded the medal, honorable mention being made of Misses Pearl McClure, Wilmar; Emma James, Warren, and Willie____of Johnsville. [Fitzhugh Fentress sounds like the counter part of "Miss Goodie Two Shoes. ha] In the infant class elocution contest Saturday evening Master Elsa Bond, Wilmar, won the medal and Misses Grace Kidd, Wilmar and Jean Sutton, Warren, received honorable mention. Following the infant class contest, Mr. R. Guy Davis of Nelson and Mr. W. H. Duncan of Hamburg represented their respective societies, Euphemian and Mermean, in annual debate. Mr. Davis was declared the winner over his most worthy competitor. At 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the sabbath Rev. P. L. Pierce, D. D. of Monroe, La., delivered most eloquent sermons. It was a treat to hear him. On Monday evening the music class had its annual contest, Miss Lula May Morris of Allis being awarded the medal. After the contest Hon. J. J. Doyne of Little Rock addressed a large audience for a period of one hour and thirty minutes, and made many friends among his hearers. On Tuesday evening the annual concert took place, which was a great success. At the close of the evening Prof. Spence presented the above successful medals; also one to Miss Birdie Stewart of Cornerville for advancement in the theory of music, and a second medal to Miss May Hart of Monticello for progress in the theory of music. Miss Berdie Stewart of Cornerville was then awarded a scholarship for next session by the principal for having made the hightest record during the session. R. Robt. Collins of Cornerville received honorable mention. About 600 visitors attended commencement. There was not a town or village in southeast Arkansas unrepresented. Hey there, Why don't you just drop in on Lauderdale County by way of the internet and see what you can find out. There are many good people there that will be glad to help you out... Oh, and in the 1840 census, there is a young couple (no children) with the head of household "W. Wood Jr.". This couple is sandwiched right between "W. Wood Sr." and "Josiah White"! This is just too big a coincidence for me to ignore, and I am wondering if Avarilla White is indeed a long-lost daughter of Josiah White. Thoughts? --Melissa
