This web address was in the Advance Monticellonian paper in July. I hope I am not out of line in putting it on this list. I just recently found a long sought after link in my father's Drew Co family, or it recently hit me in the face...so here I am asking questions and making statements etc. My gg-grandfather was John T. Huddleston who lived in the Florence area until his death after 1910. He married Nancy J. "Annie" Bean in Drew County. Annie's parents were Calvin J. and Caroline Bean, both born in Alabama. In the 1860 Desha Co. Census Franklin Twp I found the following: C. J. Bean age 38 born AL Overseer N. C. wife age 30 born AL N. J. [f] "Annie" age 13 dau born AR John W. age 11 son born AR C. M. age 4 son born AR. By 1870 both families were living next door to each other in Drew Co. Franklin Twp: J. Huddleston age 25 born AL Nancy J. Bean, but I haven't had any luck finding much else other than a marriage record in Lincoln Co.: 1880 Desha Co., AR Franklin Twp: Calvin Bean age 58 Sara E. age 48 Lillie Elliott age 18 st-dau W. Clipped from a post by Mary Lasiter: Also I remember a McCay family from when I was very young. There are 2 Robert McCay's buried in the Green Hill Cemetery but neither of them are old enough to be the one mentioned here. The older Mr. Robert McCay could have possible been the son of this Robert McCay. Mary: The Robert McKay (not McCay) that I mentioned in connection with Dr. John A. Owens lived in Marion Township and in the 1850 census, he was a tailor. Prior to living in Drew Co., AR, he lived in Fayette Co., TN, Civil Dist. 11, according to the 1840 Census. This Robert McKay and his first wife (unknown) had a son named Robert M. McKay who was born about 1844, so the one buried at Green Hill is not his son. Robert McKay, born in Scotland about 1808, married in Drew Co., AR, Mary Ann House November 11, 1852. Robert and Mary Ann House McKay had two daughters, Esther C. McKay and Elizabeth McKay. By the 1860 Census of Drew Co., AR, Monticello, Robert is running a boarding house. Among the dwellers in the boarding house are Mary Ann House McKay's mother Clarisa House age 57 and her sons, J. D. House, W. C. House, Robert House and James M. House. Esther C. McKay, daughter of Robert McKay and Mary Ann House married Lewis C. "Luke" Owens (son of Ezekiel and Adelia Owens) a first cousin of Dr. John A. Owens who had boarded with Robert McKay when he was studying medicine with Dr. Brown. By the 1870 Census, Robert McKay had died. His widow Mary Ann was living in household 241 Marion Township, Monticello, with her two daughters. I do not know the specific dates of death of Robert or Mary Ann McKay. Carolyn Haisty camayh@cox.net
I was wondering if Mr. Baker lived in the Green Hill community any. I know Dr. E. N. Bond lived there at one time because he is the brother of my great-grandfather Oliver Payton Bond. When the Bond family moved to Green Hill in 1852-53 E. N. Bond stayed in Georgia to finish his medical schooling before joining the rest of his family here. Also I remember a McCay family from when I was very young. There are 2 Robert McCay's buried in the Green Hill Cemetery but neither of them are old enough to be the one mentioned here. The older Mr. Robert McCay could have possible been the son of this Robert McCay. When I was about 5 or 6 years old Mrs. McCay sold out her house hold goods and moved in with her son. The only reason I remember this is because my mother purchased a Gone With The Wind lamp from her. Just more questions to add to the mix of things. Hello, List: I was watching the list, reading about the Baker family. I am wondering if that family could be ancestors/etc. of Mr. E. A. Baker who owned the store in Lacey. Some of the older Seniors of Lacey may know when the store began. I remember the store from the 1950's when I would ride the bus to spend the night with the Feeser girls. I do not know when the store first began, but I remember well the old store building. He and his wife lived just south of the store. We would walk to the store to buy candy and Cokes. Good luck with your search. Kathryne Burton --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1ยข/min.
Here is some info on Dr. John A. Owens, who was the son of James H. Owens and Selina Gabbie. The source is shown. James H. Owens and Ezekiel Brooke Owens (my great, great grandfather) were brothers and sons of Hunter Owens. Dr. John A. Owens Medical Doctor who began his studies in Monticello, AR under Dr. A. N. Bond for two years, Dr. Farris, one year and Dr. Brown another. Entered the medical dept. of the University of Louisiana in October 1840 and graduated in March of 1853. Practiced first at Monticello from the spring of 1853 to July 1, 1877, when he moved to Pine Bluff, AR. Was president of the Jefferson County Medical Society and helped to organize in 1870, the first State Medical Association in Arkansas. He organized a company of artillery, "Owens Battery", in the early spring of 1862 and served nearly three years in TN, MS, and AL. He commanded the battery as Captain. His war record wound up at Old Spanish Fort, opposite Mobile, AL in 1864. In Oct. of 1864 he resigned and took his family to Waco, TX, where he stayed until the fall of 1865. He returned to Monticello and began to practice medicine again. He owned a residence in Pine Bluff and valuable property in Monticello and was in comfortable circumstances. He was a Mason in Monticello - Eureka Lodge number 40 in 1850; was a Knight of Honor and a Knight of the Golden Rule. Was an old line Whig. Note: See - Dr. John A. His second wife Lizzie was born about 1874-75. Myrtle Bordeaux & Lawrence are listed as step children. Myrtle was born about 1888-89 and lawrence about 1891-92. They were all famers or living on a farm throught out the 1900's-1930's. In 1900 and 1910 census they are living in Drew County, Veasey Township. Also in 1910 Myrtle was widowed with 3 kids and her married name was owens. In 1920 census they are living in Lincoln County, Smith Township. Also again Myrtle is remarried to an Enoch Deshazier and had more children. Myrtle was still listed on the 1930 census as well for Lincoln. I do not know where the Bakers went, but most likely they were also in the same vicinity. Also in the 1920 census Myrtle's brother Lawrence Bordeaux is listed with the baker family with his wife Lilie and children. Please if you have any information at all in regards to these families please let me know. My co-worker is just starting her family history research and she need s all the help she can get, because most of the decendants are gone and there is no one she can ask. So, any and information please send it my way and i will pass it on to her. These are both black families, that most likely have a mixture of african american roots.
Hello: Hope I am not bothering you I have a few questions as a result of a query you had a reply to. In reference to some cemetery look up that you provided. I am the great granddaughter of Andrew C. Baker and his wife Mary? I do not know when they died except that I do know they are listed on the 1880 mortality schedule of drew county. Is there any way you can find out where they are buried ? They also had a young son 11 years old that is listed also on the mortality list. he was also named Andrew Baker . I would love to find them and pay my respects. I will pay what you charge for the list of any information you find. Or if you can provide me with a list of the cemetery's around drew county. Lacy comes to mind because of one census I looked at as their address for mail. Thank you so much for any information. Kathy Baker Mears
Kathy, I could not find these Bakers in the index of the Drew County cemetery book, or in the index of "Old Times Not Forgotten". However, I did look in the mortality index for 1880 on Ancestry.com and I have a little more information for you. The elder Andrew and Mary Baker died in March of 1880. Their son Andrew died in April 1880. The all died of "Catarrht fever". I did a lookup on this and it seems it should be "Catarrh fever". You can do a Google search to find more information on this. Here is one definition I found: "Catarrh - Inflammation of a mucous membrane, especially of the air passages of the head and throat, with a free discharge. It is characterized by cough, thirst, lassitude, fever, watery eyes, and increased secretions of mucus from the air passages. Bronchial catarrh was bronchitis; suffocative catarrh was croup; urethral catarrh was gleet; vaginal catarrh was leukorrhea; epidemic catarrh was the same as influenza. Synonyms: cold, coryza. Nose and throat discharge from cold or allergy; influenza." The 1880 mortality schedule gives a little more information on the Bakers. The elder Andrew and Mary had been residents of Drew County for 23 years. (Take this number with a grain of salt; it could be off by a couple of years here or there.) Their son had been a resident for 11 years, meaning he was born there. Just a note: In the 1870 census, I believe Andrew Baker was listed as 3 years old, which means he was closer to 13 when he died. Their attending physician was Dr. John Owens. The Drew County Museum may have a photograph of the doctor, just to add a little more to your family story. Another note: In the 1870 census, I noticed that Andrew Baker owned over $1000 in real estate. He very well may have a probate record in the Drew County courthouse that will get you closer to finding a death date for him. Wish I could be of more help. --Melissa -----Original Message----- From: PARVONA@aol.com [mailto:PARVONA@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2006 7:48 AM To: ardrew@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ARDREW] Andrew C. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Baker, Dan/Daniel & Myrtle Bordeaux Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FV.2ADI/565 Message Board Post: Hello I have a co-worker who is just starting her research. Unfortunately there are a lot of her family members already gone, so there is not anyone she can talk too or ask a lot of questions. She is trying to trace her Bordeaux and Baker ancestors. They were living in Arkansas, Drew & desha County around the 1900's and probably earlier. There is a Myrtle Bordeaux & Dan/Daniel & Lizzie Baker. Myrtle Bordeaux was born in the late 1888-90. In 1900 I believe she was living with the bakers as a step daughter or was taken in the family along with other siblings of hers. I believe Myrtles parents died sometime before 1900. In 1910 she listed as a Mryrtle Owens, widowed and had about 3 kids. Then in 1930 she is remarried again to a Enoch Deshazier and had more children. Through out all these years they are farm workers righ alongside with Dan Bakers family, so there is a definate family tie or relationship. These families are black and they probably lived and worked on a farm with a number of people in those days. Also Dan Baker was married twice, for i believe the first wife's name was Mary. So the wife must have died at some point for he is listed with the wife Lizzie in 1900 and he is twice her age. Anyways if any of these names sound familar to anyone please let me know. My co-workers name is Vivian and she is desparate to find any help and information. So, if you can contact me with any information and i will then pass it on to her.

> Tell us about Possum Valley days..... It's an annual festival/homecoming for Valley folks and visitors. Very well attended. Craft show, quilt show, games, talent show, several bands, etc. Good food. A dance at night. Some of the games are quite unique. One is the possum race. Another is the chicken drop. Chickens are placed in a pen with squares marked on the dirt floor. If you guess the square where a chicken "drops" you win the prize. Proceeds go to the community center.
It's always in October - not sure of date yet. Will let you know. > > Is there a date set for this year's Possum Valley Days?
