Edna; Yes my linage is the Drew County "Deal's" . As far as we have ever been able to determine all the Deal's in Drew and Ashley Counties descended from Lamarcus Deal and Sarah Barrett. They settled near where Hwy 425 and the present Drew and Ashley County line is in 1843 or 44. I am sorry to say I do not have a copy of "Old Times Not Forgotten". My ggrand parents was Alexander Deal and Margaret West the son of Lamarcus Deal and Sarah Barrett. My grand parents were W L "Buck" Deal and Julia Clay Lea. Julia Clay Lea was the daughter of James Monroe Lea and Florence McKnight. Jan: I'm not certain but Aaron Zeno was the owner of the automobile junkyard on highway 65. I think his son was Raoul. At any rate his son was learning the junk business in the early 50's for sure. He was learning well so I am told. I don't know if I told you or not but "Watson Is Where It Wuz" is finished now. Sales have been pretty good but mainly through my own efforts. I noticed someone visited Herman Hayes in Winchester. Herman was the father of Helen Hayes who married my first cousin Billy Joe Covey. Monticellonian Feb. 12, 1942 Letter Written During Civil War (This letter was written during the Civil War by James Monroe Lea to Miss Florence McKnight whom he later married. They were the parents of the late Mrs. W.L. Deal, grandparents of Mrs. Lee Blair, Anna Deal, Homer Deal and Harvill Deal. This letter is in the possession of their great grandson, Robert Deal) 22 Miss Reg. Palmentto, Ga., Sept. 28th, 1864 Miss Florence McKnight Liberty, Miss. Dear Florence Mr. Causey of our company arrived in camp yesterday and brought me your letter of the 19th, also three others, one from Sister Emily. You cannot imagine the pleasure I experienced in reading the. It had got to be such an unusual thing for me to receive a letter that I was somewhat surprised and felt myself highly honored to think so many of my friends would remember me at the same time. I could not have been surprised by a letter from home at any time, but I had almost come to the conclusion that I had ceased to occupy a place in your memory, at the same time. I thought it hard to be thus forgotten and hoped that as old a soldier friend as I am had not escaped your memory. Out of all my letters, which do you think I read first. I will leave that for you to guess. None of them were from lady friends except yourself. I was some surprised sometime since at receiving a letter from a young lady inquiring about her intended husband who was killed sometime since. I had a short visit to the hospital recently. I was not exactly sick but had a hip wound rendering me unable to march for a while. I had a very nice time after I got so I could get about. The young ladies treated me very kindly. One told me I was her sweetheart and extracted a promise from me to write to her, but I am sorry that I cannot fulfill my promise. One young lady told me that the young men, and even some of the married men from Mississippi made it their business to get engaged to a young lady every where they went, and some that could not marry at home would marry if they could. I politely informed her I did not even want a sweetheart in Georgia, and after that it was as if I could not find one among them that would be willing to be mine. I was now satisfied to go without. She said I was exception. Every season has it's odd quails. Sometime since, marrying seemed to be the object sought for by most of the unmarried, both aged and young. Now I am glad to learn that they have turned their attention to religion to the salvation of their souls. There has never been a time when there was such an interest taken in religion both in and out of the army. This army was honored with a visit by President Davis a few days since. He was not received as enthusiastically as he was in days of yore. He did not even get a cheer from our Brigade, but if he had ordered them forward into battle they would have made the words sing with their shouts. I do not try to make you believe we love fighting anything else first, unless it is absolutely necessary, and then we can go into with its good grace as any troop. Since writing to you last we have lost many valuable men, but have profited little by it. I am in hopes our bloody campaign is at a close. I have not the least idea when or where the next battle will commence. There will be but few furloughs for this army in sometime if ever again. My chance for coming home is gone. I know of no future time on which I can place a hope to come home, however that troubles me but little. Florence I know you will be shocked at this, but it is the best I can do at present. I remain as ever your friend. J. Mondae (sic) Lea __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo!
