    1. [ARDREW] CCC Program
    2. Bob Deal
    3. We seem to have so many people on the list who do not know much about the CCC program. I will share some of my memories. I can't recall exactly what year the program began but it was disbanded around 1940 when the Army started recruiting and drafting young men for the upcoming World War 2. The CCC stood for >Civilian Conservation Corps< I think the pay was around $21.00 per month of which the enrollee got $5.00. The rest went to his family. The program had some features like the Army. They did many projects on private and public land. Many of the things they constructed are still being used today. Park Building and landscaping for parks. Fire trails into timber land. Ponds for farmers. Terraces for farmers. Fighting forest fires. Farm drainage ditches. As far as I can recall the programs on private lands all related to conservation of farm and timber land. I have visited a number of parks in Arkansas and other states over the years where the facilities were constructed by the CCC. I was never in the program but I have memories of it. Robert

Wish I had paid more attention when he would tell about it - best that I remember is that it was a real godsend to many in the area. Thanks for any add'l info...... Judy

Since this happened in my back yard, I would surely like to know who this Claud Moss was and where he lived. He's about the only one in the Monroe Deal letter that I haven't figured out. Could it be becuase he ran to MS? Is there a follow-up article about his trial in Drew Co.?beth

    3. Ark. Gazette Nov. 3, 1894, Monticello, Nov 2 - J.F. Eggleston, General State Agent for the Singer Manufacturing Company in Monticello, committed suicide here this morning. He had been on a protracted spree and took an overdose of chloral(my note - a hypnotic), it is supposed accidentally. Mr. Eggleston was a good business man when not under the influence of liquor and made many friends here who regret his tragic end. He leaves a mother and sister at Richmond, Va. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Messenger - Talk while you surf! It's FREE. http://im.yahoo.com/

    3. My Uncle was in the CCC camp from 1937-39 but he and several other Arkansas men were in Ames/Bedford Iowa where they constructed a beautiful public campground called Lake of Three Fires. It is a beautiful place and he regaled us with stories of their escapades. He also was very proud of the gorgeous trees, now 60+ years old, that were tiny seedlings exported there from Arkansas. My cousin has a video taken about 1992 when he went for a memory trip and told us all about the construction of the park. He was very proud of the fact that he personally hand cut about 2/3 of the stone that was used to build the Ranger station. He had several pictures of the men in his company. It is a very important part of our history that most of our children never heard of. It saved a lot of families from starvation. Just wanted to share my thoughts. 1. [ARDREW] Haynes/Baker incident
    2. jann woodard
    3. Ark. Gazette July 17, 1891 Monticello, July 16 - E. K. Haynes, Jr., was fatally stabbed about 1 o'clock today by a youth named Bob Baker. Haynes was teaching school and Baker a young man was one of his pupils. This morning Haynes punished him for some misdemeanor and he left, but subsequently returned and without warning fell upon Haynes, stabbing him in several places, cutting the jugular vein. Haynes expired almost instantly. Deceased is the son of County Judge E.K. Haynes for whom much sympathy is expressed, this being the second son to die at the hands of an assassin within a few months of each other. He leaves a young wife and many relatives to mourn his untimely end. A Sheriff's posse is in pursuit of the murderer, who instantly fled. August 23, 1891, Monticello, Aug. 22 - In regard to the falsity of the article in the Gazette of the 23d of July, in the first place I will quote to you the false part of the article: "This morning Haynes punished him for some misdemeanor and he left, but subsequently returned, and, without warning, fell upon Haynes, stabbing him in several places, cutting the jugular vein. Haynes expired almost instantly." THE FACTS: At recess of the morning of the 16th of July, about 11:30 o'clock a. m. there being in the school house Haynes, Bob Baker and two or three other students. Bob Baker said to the other boys present, "Boys, let's eat dinner." Haynes said, "Bob, shut your mouth," and Baker Said, "Well, if I cannot talk in time of recess I had better quit school." Haynes jumped up and struck at Baker, saying, "I will knock your head off, sir," thrusting his hand inside the breast pocket of his coat. Bob said to Haynes: "If we must fight, let's go out of the house," and stepped out doors, Haynes following. Bob said, "Mr. Haynes, have you any reason? If you have, let us reason about this matter." Haynes showing a disposition to be aggressive, Bob turned and walked off toward home, but soon come back, stopping at the school house cistern to get water, and while in the act of drinking, Haynes stepped out of and around the school house, approaching Bob in an aggressive manner. Bob grabbed Haynes' pistol and hand with one of his and began cutting Haynes with his other hand. Haynes turned and Bob ceased cutting him, but Haynes after staggering off a few feet began to shoot at Bob. The above is, I believe, a true statement of the sad affair. I don't think it necessary to go into details in regard to the location of the school house, cistern, etc., as that will all come out on the day of the trial, as Bob intends to come in and stand trial. 1. [ARDREW] Newsbriefs
    2. jann woodard
    3. Ark. Gazette June 2, 1891 Monticello, June 1 - A lamentable tragedy occurred in the northern portion of this county about 8 o'clock this morning, wherein John A. Cameron shot and killed one Yarborough who lived in the adjoining county of Lincoln. The difficulty originated in Yarborough's persistent attention to the daughter of Cameron, after being forbidden. About a week ago Cameron severely whipped his daughter for clandestinely meeting Yarborough, after which she left home and no trace of her could be found. A warrant was served on Yarborough yesterday, and he produced the girl and admitted having harbored her since her departure from home. He is a widower, with no one living with him by his two small children. This so incensed Cameron that he went in pursuit of Yarborough, and on meeting him, riddled him with buckshot. The Cameron family are highly respectable, and the affair is universally regretted. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Messenger - Talk while you surf! 3. Arkansas Gazette May 31, 1914 - Tillar, May 30 PHYSICIAN IS SLAIN BY FATHER-IN-LAW Dr. J.T. Cheairs Kills Dr. Pipkin on Streets of Tillar Dr. Pipkin was shot and killed by Dr. J.T. Cheairs at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. Only meager details of the shooting could be learned here this afternoon. It is said that the killing grew out of rivalry between the two physicians and that bad blood had existed between them professionally for some time. Dr. Cheairs moved to this place from Winchester several months ago. An eyewitness to the tragedy and a friend of Dr. Pipkin, who had talked with the victim a few minutes before the shooting occurred, told him that Cheairs intended to kill him and that if he wasn't on his guard he expected to be slain any time. This friend, a traveling man also said that a few minutes later the two men met on the street near Dr. Pipkin's office and that without warning Dr. Cheairs drew his pistol and fired five shots into Pipkin's body and that after his victim had fallen he threw his pistol at Dr. Pipkin. Tillar, May 31 1914 = The jury in a private inquest held today by Deputy Coroner A. F. J. Collins exonerated Dr. J. T. Cheairs Sr. in the killing of Dr. J. W. Pipkin. Dr. Cheairs shot Dr. Pipkin Saturday afternoon. The findings of the jury relative to the motive for the killing were not made public, but it is said that Dr. Pipkin, who is a son-in-law of Dr. Cheairs, sought him to "settle" some alleged differences in family affairs. It also is said that Dr. Pipkin charged the elder physician with a chair and that Dr. Cheairs stepped back suddenly, drew his gun and fired until Dr. Pipkin fell dead. Dr. Pipkin is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Pipkin 1307 Summit avenue, Little Rock. He is survived by his father, mother, wife and four children, Roscoe, Burnie, Johnnie and Marguerite. The funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock this morning at the home of Dr. Pipkin's father on Summit avenue. Burial to be made in Oakland Cemetery. Dr. Pipkin was 45 years old and for a number of years had been a member of the McGehee lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
