    1. [ARDREW] 1896 Arkansas City Newspaper and Drew County
    2. Louis Reitzammer
    3. When I began to transcribe the 8 Apr 1896 issue of the Arkansas City Journal recently, I noticed that the Drew County towns of Tillar and Winchester were featured prominently, with much space given to singing their praises and describing their business establishments in glowing terms. Then I discovered the reason. It seems there was a movement in Desha County at the time, 104 years ago, to annex the small chunk of Drew County which contains the two towns and move the Desha's county seat from Arkansas City to one of them. Obviously the scheme didn't work because Arkansas City, now just a faint shadow of its former importance as a river port and railroad center, is still the county seat. I believe you Drew Countians will enjoy reading about it. You can find it at http://www.public.usit.net/reitzamm/journal3.htm Louis Reitzammer at Jackson, Tennessee < [email protected] >

    1. [ARDREW] Trantham Family
    2. BeckyJohn Bannon
    3. At this point, Joy, I honestly don't know what to tell you - except that I doubt these could be his parents .... simply because of the death date. However, with the Hogue name, there has to be a connection somewhere. I've never pursued the Trantham side of the family. If I find out more info., I will let you know. The only thing I remember is that my uncle's name was Floyd, he was a barber, he had a wife named Minnie, and a brother whom everyone called Shorty (also a barber). That is the sum total of what I know about the Tranthams. My father was very fond of both Uncles Floyd and Shorty. For whatever reason, my father did not talk much about his Drew County relatives, and Floyd and Shorty Trantham seemed to be his family connection mainstay. I don't know if this helps in any manner, but my Father's side of the family is of course Hogue, as my previous email indicated and Myhand (which was his Mother's maiden name). How that ties in with the Tranthams I don't know, but perhaps you have some information that I don't have. I did look at my genealogy information and noticed an Anna or Anne Hogue as a daughter of M. George Hogue and Eliza Urcilla Hogue. They were my great grandparents, making Anna or Anne my Great Aunt. Anna/Anne was supposedly born around 1866 in Drew County. It is possible she married a Trantham. Or had a daughter who married a Trantham ...... which would have been more my father's age. This is all speculation, however, but I'll send to Ardrew and see what we get. 3. April 29, 1894, Monticello - One of the much looked for society events of this place was consummated yesterday morning in the marriage of Judge H. W. Wells to Miss Minnie Ward, at Bastrop, La. After the ceremony the bridal party boarded the train for Monticello, their future home, arriving on the 6 o'clock p.m. train. Thence they repaired to the Judge's beautiful suburban home, one mile south of Monticello, where a reception was given to a few of the Judge's intimate friends, among whom might be mentioned Hon. John S. Little, candidate for Congress of Second District. The bride is the daughter of Capt. Ward, of Bastrop, La., and is very lovely and accomplished. The groom is Judge H. W. Wells, the present able and talented Prosecuting Attorney of the Tenth Judicial District, and one of the most loyal, clever and hospitable gentlemen in the State. That their lot may always be one of sunshine and happiness is the ardent wish of their many friends. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? >From homework help to love advice, Yahoo! 3. Drew Advance Jan. 29, 1926: While thinking over the spiritual life we enjoyed together and the many times dear sister Scogins stood by my suffering bed, I write these few lines. Since God in His great love has seen fit to call sister Martha Scogins from a world of trouble to a heavenly rest, He said He was gone to prepare for her and all who love His appearing as sister Scogins did. She patiently waited for that sweet peace and rest that the Savior promised her in her earthly profession. She lived a true Christian, a faithful companion and a loving mother until death. She was to you a sweet flower with its melody and love but now she is called to heaven to rest in that sweet home. To you this word is given, that you shall share that home so fair and meet sweet companion and mother over there. Dear friends, remember as you pass by, As you are now so once was I. And as I am now you must be. Prepare for death and follow me.
