All the interesting facts about the Arkansas earthquakes reminded me of the time shortly after my father's death in 1957 his insurance agent came to see me to go over the policies for Dad's property in Drew County. He said my father, John Boyd, had the only earthquake insurance policy his company (Hardware Mutual) wrote in the whole state of Arkansas. On the agent's advice, I cancelled the earthquake part of the coverage, but now I suspect Dad knew something about earthquakes that I had forgotten, don't you? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Robert, There are several old newspaper reports of tremors in this area. Remember this area is on the edge of the New Madrid Fault. The April 6, 1911 edition of the "Eagle" in Hamburg also carried a report on this event. Shocks were reported in Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Rison, Warren, Hot Springs, Clarendon, Star city, England, Lake Village, Fordyce, Ladd, and Wilmar. The JUne 22, 1930 edition of the Leader in Hamburg reported tremors in Hamburg, Dermott, Warren, and other places. In June 1939 the Leader carried a report of tremors in Parkdale and Portland. I have seen many other reports of tremors around the state but did not copy them. Oral history is a wonderful source, but so are old newspapers. Thanks for this, and yes, I would hope this would not be confused with the New Madrid earthquake since we are talking about a 100 year difference. So far there has not been anything that compares to the New Madrid earthquake. Arkansas Gazette April 1, 1911: MANY ARKANSAS TOWNS SHAKEN BY EARTHQUAKE DISTINCT SHOCKS ARE EXPERIENCED IN EAST AND SOUTHEAST ARKANSAS Star City, Mar. 31 - A considerable tremor was felt here at 10:45 o'clock today, continuing only a few seconds. It was noticed by most everyone in town. It was felt considerably at Tarry, Yorktown and other places along the phone line. Fordyce, Mar. 31 - Fordyce was severely shaken by an earthquake today about 11 o'clock. The disturbance lasted about 10 seconds and was so severe that people rushed from their business houses and homes for safety. So far as can been ascertained, no damage was done. A second shock occurred at 12:10, but was not as severe as the first. A continuous prayer service has been going on among the negroes all the afternoon. Lake Village, Mar 31 - The earthquake shock was very distinct here about 11 o'clock this morning. Pine Bluff, Mar. 31 - At 11 o'clock this morning two distinct earthquake shocks were felt here. The shocks were so severe that buildings rumbled and swayed, and hundreds of excited residents crowded the streets in a panic. Many of them feared to return to their houses, and in the downtown district the excitement was intense. Windows were broken in various parts of the city. At the Sixth Avenue school building, the walls of the building were cracked and plastering fell upon the pupils. In the new $100,000 high school building plastering fell from the ceiling of the big auditorium. The Sixth Avenue pupils were dismissed until the afternoon hour. Occupants of the court house thought the building was falling into the Arkansas River and ran out in numbers. Old residents say it was the most the most severe quake they had ever experienced. Some claim to have felt slight quakes at 10 a.m., and another slight quake was felt shortly after the noon hour. Rison, Mar 31 - What is supposed to have been a severe earthquake shock was felt here this morning at 10:57, throwing the entire town into a panic. Men, women and children hurried out into the streets, thinking the houses were falling. All the clocks in town stopped, bottles were broken, flues toppled over and fell. Several brick buildings in town cracked a number of glass windows were broken. Three distinct shocks were felt. Wilmar, Mar 31 - A severe earthquake was felt here at 10:55 o'clock this morning. The earth simply shook and the buildings rocked like ships on the sea. People, stricken with fright, rushed from the buildings, but all was over by then and so far no damage is reported. Warren, Mar 31 - Wild excitement was caused in Warren by two earthquake shocks felt here this morning. The first occurred a few minutes after 11 o'clock, the second a few minutes after 12 o'clock. Both times, the shock caused the ringing of the bell in the courthouse and occupants of the building rushed forth in terror. In the public school building the stove pipes were thrown down by the shock and the children made a mad rush out of the building. Articles were knocked from the shelves of stores. After each shock the streets were filled with excited people. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. Jann; I accept the fact I was wrong about the earthquake. When I spotted that April 1 date and the fact that I had never heard it mentioned I just assumed it was an "April fool prank" sent to the paper. I would love to read more articles about it,but only because I would like to learn more about it not to convince me it happened. I believe the New Madrid earthquake was in the early part of the 19th century. I have read where some historians believe it was the worst earthquake to ever hit North America. So few people lived in the area at that time and the type buildings of those days limited the death toll. I think the safe zone for humans is considered to be south of a line from about Star City to Dumas for any future earthquake of this magnitude. It reached a long way according to history? It was bad enough to create Crowley's ridge; wasn't it? My memory's not what it used to be.beth
Sorry Robert, but it happened. No joke! There is one entire page in the Gazette describing the towns south of Little Rock where this occurred. Towns mentioned are Pine Bluff, Rison, England, Clarendon, Star City, Fordyce, Warren (it was described more intense than Wilmar), Ladd, Lake Vallage, and Daleville. The Arkansas Democrat also had many articles written about this earthquake. If you want, I will post the info from the nearby towns. This earthquake should not be confused with the New Madrid earthquake which occurred about l8ll-l2, or somewhere around that time. It was a series of earthquakes or aftershocks and I believe spanned a period of time over a year or two. It is said the Mississippi River ran backwards, and for a fact, it created Reelfoot Lake in Northwestern Tennessee. Some towns were said to have disappeared during that time. It is quite interesting to read accounts of the big one, which the experts say we are overdue for another big one on the New Madrid Fault. Ark. Gazette November 19, 1884: To the Editor of The Gazette: Sir: Our town was thrown into much excitement and indignation by two unknown persons shooting an old negro, Gus Martin, last night, about 11 o'clock. Old Gus was on his way home from a grand jollification meeting of the democrats and took an active part in making speeches and thanking God for the glorious triumph of the democracy. The deputy sheriff, with a posse of white citizens of this place, arrested two young negroes this morning, who tried to intimidate and threaten the old man by such words as: "You and all the damned democrats ought to be killed, as we hate the democrats more than rattlesnakes." Owing to insufficiency of proof, the two would-be assassins were placed under $250 peace bonds, and will be carried to jail tomorrow as they cannot make the bond. Gus Martin is one of the few negroes in this community, who has the courage to vote his convictions. This is how the negroes persuade and coerce their own color and kind to vote as they want them to. Hoping the apprehension of these two lads will suppress all such actions, I remain very respectfully, Citizen __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Ark. Gazette April 27, 1911 Pine Bluff, April 26 - After removing their coats and inviting each other to fight, in an effort to settle a quarrel they had over business matters, J. W. Robinson, employed by A. M. Sawyer, agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company at Altheimer is said to have stabbed Sawyer to death with a picket-knife. Before assistance would reach Sawyer, he had been stabbed four times in the back and was dead. The fight occurred just a few feet from the Cotton Belt railroad station at Altheimer, 12 miles from Pine Bluff, at 4:30 o'clock this morning and immediately after the men reached there after a visit to this city, where they came together and were apparently the best of friends. Robinson, who was arrested by Station Agent Eldridge, was brought to this city Wednesday afternoon by Special Deputy Constable A. L. Cason, and placed in the county jail. He was held without bail to await the action of the Grand Jury by Magistrate W. S. Stewart, after being given a preliminary hearing at Altheimer. Robinson lives at Sherrill, Ark. He has a wife and three children. Sawyer recently came to this county from Monticello and was living with his wife and three small children at Altheimer. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Woodmen of the World. The body was shipped to his old home at Tillar, Ark., today by the Masons for interment. Robinson denies the charge. He says a negro stabbed Sawyer, when the latter said something to a negro woman who alighted from the train a short time before accompanied by the negro. Sawyer was a relative of Coroner H. E. Williams of this county. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one Place. http://shopping.yahoo.com/

This is probably Martha Brantley Scogins, wife of Henry Hartsfield Scogins. She died 1/21/1926. Henry was my great-grandmother's brother. BTW: I have found this family name spelled Scoggin, Scoggins, Scogin, Scogins, and Scroggins. Very confusing. Terry (Rodgers) Wheeler
