Arkansas Gazette September 9, 1912 - Arkansas City, Sep 8 - John Anthony, a steamboat engineer of Memphis, was drowned here this morning about 1:00 o'clock when he walked in his sleep off the steamboat Reliance at Memphis, belonging to the Union Sand and Material Co. of St. Louis. The Union Sand and Material Co. has a saw mill here and yesterday its fleet of barges and tugs arrived from Memphis. Anthony was the engineer in charge and it was his first trip on the Reliance. About 1:00 o'clock the night watchman heard a splash at the end of the steamer. He reached the spot just in time to see Anthony disappear under the barge. He did what he could to locate the man, but his efforts were fruitless. Men have been dragging the river all day but thus far the body has not been located. Anthony was a married man with two children. September 10, 1912, Ark. City, Sep 9 - J.S. Johnson, for a number of years county treasurer, and one of the leading citizens of this city, died yesterday at Hot Springs. The body was taken to Monticello, where burial will be held. The Masonic order will have charge of the services. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife and six children. Jan 9, 1927, McGehee, Jan 8 - W.J. Powell of Dumas, died at his home Tuesday night. He had been a resident of Dumas for more than 10 years, having moved there from Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, and one son, Burns. Jan 9, 1927, McGehee, Jan 8 - Eugene Childers, aged 59, died here at 2:30 yesterday morning. He is survived by two sisters. Mr. Childers had lived here 16 years. Jan 16, 1927, Little Rock - Funeral services for Mrs. Tillie Mossholder of McGehee, who died here Friday morning, will be held at 2 this afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. F.L. Bauman, 323 West Eighth Street, Baring Cross, North Little Rock. The Rev. F.W.A. Bierman, pastor of the Luther Memorial Lutheran church of Little Rock, will conduct the services. Pallbearers will be: Ed Couch, John Doolittle, William Zuick, Frank Kojeski, Fritz Brock and Sam Harrison. Burial will be in charge of Owens & Co.
