My husband's grandfather was David Oscar Porter, Senior who ran a saloon in Arkansas City and then moved to Dumas where he lived until he died in the 1930s. He had two brothers W. A. and E. M. and a sister Mary who was married to J. B. Jackson of Arkansas City. His mother, Mary Cherry Porter lived in Arkansas City with Mary. I began some research on the family after I married D.O. III. All family records were destroyed by my husband's aunt before she died so I have not been able to trace anything about the brothers. I do have a copy of J. B. Jackson obituary but no information on Mary or her mother after that. I would really like to know anything about the brothers and also where Mary Cherry Porter might be buried. February 4, 2000 For Immediate Release Contact: Tracey Converse roots@myfamily.org 501-835-7502 ARKANSAS' LARGEST FAMILY HISTORY ORGANIZATION OFFERS GENEALOGY CLASSES Little Rock-The Arkansas Family History Association recently announced a lecture series featuring national and regional speakers on how to trace your family tree. According to April 1999 issue of Time Magazine, family history research is one of the leading subject on the Internet. With the advent of the Internet, AFHA founder Desmond Walls Allen says, "Reconnecting distant family relations is now easier than before. Many folks find when they get on mailing lists that they have a distant cousin also researching the family." "Our website alone had 20,000 hits last month. Our staff of nationwide volunteers have done over 200 genealogy lookups in the last month." Designed to offer free membership and online lookups to people with Internet access, AFHA has grown to the largest genealogical organization in the state with over 1000 members worldwide. During just the first three weeks of this year, the AFHA Internet Mailing list saw over 700 messages posted about Arkansas history. "The phenomenal growth shows an incredible interest of the people of Arkansas to learn about their families past," said Allen. Education is a major goal of this organization. With monthly meetings held at the Central Arkansas Library's Main Branch, AFHA hopes to educate more people in the fine art of research. Tickets to the classes are $12 in advance and $10 for members. The class runs from 2-5 pm at the Main Library in Little Rock at 100 Rock Street. Monies raised will be used to support the Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library. The February 20 meeting will feature regional lecturer Tracey Converse. Her topic will be "Surfing the Web for Cousins." She will provide insight into how to find your family information on the web. What search engines to use and how to share your information with others. Converse is also the web master for the Central Arkansas Library System and has been on the web for 5 years and researching her family history since 1983. Additional classes are slated for March 17, April 15, May 14, June 11 and July 30. Topics will include Newspaper Research, Beginning Genealogy, Civil War Records, and Native American Research. I've just finished uploading, to the Desha County ARGenWeb site, transcripts of the Desha County History and Biographical sections from BIOLOGICAL & HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF SOUTHERN ARKANSAS (1890). Anyone who is interested in the early years of this area will want to log-on and read these accounts. I believe you will find them interesting. Jo-Ann: Since Scott Cemetery is in Jefferson Township, Desha County, I looked at a 1939/41 Desha County Highway Map I have in my file. Churches are shown by a small black square with a cross on top. There are numerous "country" church besides the ones in towns such as Winchester, Tillar, Pickens and Walnut Lake. There is no indication of denomination and I'm sure some of them were "part-time," with services once or twice a month. Guess you might find out the names from the Association. I seem to remember that this area of the county was in the Bartholomew Association of Baptists. Sorry I can't be of more help. For any of you that are interested Leslie Gill wrote a book many years ago on the Gill family. I don't know if he has any books left but he gave me one and it is more than worth reading if you are interested in the places in and around Desha County. Leslie is the mayor of Watson, Desha County, Arkansas and can be reached by regular mail at that address. I'll bet even Ol' Son Cox will be there. He never turned down a piece of catfish in his life. Can anyone suggest names of Baptist Churches that were around "since 1913" to at least 1935 in the Drew Co. / Desha Co. areas (most likely Desha Co.)? There was a note in my Grandfather Conrad's file to such but it didn't list the name of the church. He's buried in Scott Cemetery. Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net

I and my husband are in the process of building a website on states in the southeast. Im going to have basic information of the Counties and on records and links. If someone familiar with the records available for this county could take a look at it and correct me on information or can add info (especially county history), I would really appreciate it. Also any feedback from anyone is also helpful. The address is http://www.segenealogy.com then go to the state and county page. Thanks in advance. For more information on Desha you could probably talk to Ruth and Fred Haley. They have lived in Desha all of their life they both worked for a public utility company in McGehee. I have been away from there since 1944 and most of my past is a little blurred or blackened by some unpleasantness. Keep up the good work and when I get this collar off - I will try to copy some of the old newspapers that I have until then - Pleasant Happenings. Ruth Desha
JoAnn: I went to school with a TOMMIE NELL GRAVES she was the daughter of JEFF GRAVES of Watson, Arkansas. TOMMIE NELL married a PAUL HUNTHROP who I also went to school with. They are still in the area. I think they now live in Dumas. Hi Bill and Desha Listers, You asked where everyone is? Well, I'm under the covers, Bill... :-) We've got 10 inches of snow and a temperature reading of 2 degrees - Oops! make that 1 above - here in Indiana. :-) Besides, my fingers are tired; I must have called almost every Conrad in Arkansas today looking for a connection. Wouldn't you know it? Not one person could remember or knew enough about their families to be able to add to the line. Thank goodness I have that 5 cent Sunday rate...otherwise I'd be real broke about now. :-) I did find some other cousins, though: Edwards, Graves, Lee, Long, Glosup, Price, Cleaver, and Harp. I just may have to make a visit down there and look for some information. :-) Stokin' up the woodstove, Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net

HELP! I am freezing here in Indiana... It is now about 10 below at 3 AM; since I can't find my Conrad line in Desha Co. via the internet, I just *may* have to come visit. :-) That depends, of course...on the weather. Is it warmer there? And, in case anyone has ever even heard of the surname Conrad in southeastern Arkansas, I sure could use some good news. Frustrated and frrrrrreezing (got to go stoke up the woodstove), Jo-Ann
