Susan, I am the 3rd great-grandniece of Winnie McCaslin (dau. of David and Rachel) through her marriage to William H. Temple. Here is the info I have. 1) From "Some Temple Descendants" by Elmer Temple David M. McCaslin b 1806 TN d Dec 1879 married to Rachel C. // b 1801 TN d 1880 (It's quite possible that he was wrong and you are right about places of birth. He went by the information folks gave him) David was a Methodist minister. It is said that he passed away singing "A Charge to Keep I Have." 2) Rachel McCaslin Temple is buried in the Morrison Cemetery at Rudy, Crawford Co., AR. The dates on her tombstone are 1801-1880. David is also buried at Morrison, but I did not happen see his tombstone during my quick run-around there a couple of weeks ago. I was focusing on the O'Kelleys and the Temples (my grandmother's people). However, the book "History in Headstones" gives his dates as 1806 to Dec 1879. Elmer Temple's book only mentions 2 children of David and Rachel - James and Winnie. I'll give you all the info I have on them. 3)James McCaslin is buried in Morrison Cemetery also. History in Headstones gives his dates as 30 Nov 1831-1 Dec 1896. There is no Sarah Elizabeth McCaslin buried here before 1970. Elmer Temple gives James' wife's name as "Sarah Jane." No dates on her. Elmer Temple lists one child of the couple, Newton Sylvester McCaslin, 9 Mar 1856 - 25 Jan 1947. Married Mary Elizabeth Blackwell 6 Feb 1881. Mary b 27 Nov 1866 d 13 Jan 1956. Newton was a farmer. The couple had 6 children. Tell me if you want further info on this line. 4)Winnie McCaslin and her husband William H. Temple are buried in Morrison Cemetery. Winnie's tombstone reads 1839-1917. William's says only "Co D 1st AR Cav" for his service in the Union Army. Elmer Temple lists William's date of birth as 25 Aug 1838 in Tennessee - either in Davidson County, OR Frankfort in Williamson County. He says they married in 1866 or 1867. Elmer also says William died 63 hours before Winnie, in the winter of 1916 or 1917 (1917 according to her tombstone). I have 2 sons listed for this couple - Frances Marion Temple and Benjamin F. Temple. The tombstone for Benjamin F. Temple son of William & Winnie in Morrison Cemetery says "died July 24 1890 Age 21 yrs 5 days. He apparently never married. Frances Marion Temple 20 Jan 1868 Crawford Co., AR -9 Jul 1954 Nowata, OK married... (deep breath) Lou Verna Katherline Mahala Elizabeth Center 1 Jan 1890 in Crawford County (from marriage certificate). (Yes, that is spelled Katherline - she went by Katie). Her dates 24 Oct 1870 Winslow, AR -1 Jul 1947 Nowata, Delaware Co., OK. Her funeral records say she died of "acute dilation of the heart due to cardiovascular renal disease." She was ill for 2 weeks before her death. She lived in Van Buren, AR at the time, so must have gone to Nowata for the hospital?? Her place of burial is given as "Memorial Park" in Nowata. I have 2 children for this couple. Tell me if you want their information as well. Additional notes: William H. Temple's brother Frances Marion Temple, Sr. married a Minerva Lewis (his second wife) in 1863. Perhaps your Minerva Melvina McCaslin dau of Newton was named after her? Minerva would have been Winnie's sister-in-law, and therefore probably known to James and Sarah and their son Newton. Hope some of this is helpful new info to you!
