The list of dates is an oversimplification. West Virginia, for example, WAS Viriginia until its secession in the Civil War, so my ancestors, and I had several, who were born in western Virginia in the 1700s and early 1800s were born in Virginia, not WV, and I find their records in the old Montgomery, Rockingham, Greenbriar, Monoghelia Virginia archives; many of these records can only be found in the Virginia state archives where they belong. Again, not all of PA in 1752-1786 was originally part of Virginia. I research extensively in VA, MD, PA, TN, and what is now WV, and from 45 years of experience I think these oversimplified dates could lead a new researcher to waste a lot of time and energy! Few things in genealogy are this simple. I wish they were!
