    3. Hay, in the 1880-1910 time frame every little community around Alma had a cotton gin. The last issue of the Nuggets of Old (Crawford County Genealogical Society) had a picture of the cotton gin in Dean Springs with a note about Sam Rye's first bale of cotton for the year 1912. Weight 508 lb. value $61.21. Not a lot of rice grown today in Crawford County. But Don Watson (originally of Alma, son of Marshal Watson of the Alma Cash store) is now the Marketing VP for Riceland Rice. I hope we can get a story on the Watsons in a future issue of "Nuggets". His brother, Gordon who lives in Van Buren, was a founder of USA Trucking of Van Buren. I noticed in the Watson book at the Crawford County Genealogical Library that John Watson deserted from the 55th Royal Foot Regiment sometime about 1735. Still little rice grown in Crawford County today. I live just north of there and honestly, in my travels, I haven't seen a lot of cotton. That has been more to the southern part of Arkansas and along the river around Dardanelle. There might be some around Dora but I haven't or don't recall seeing cotton around Alma but I will bet there is some, just not like it used to be.
