An exchange from Debra was interesting to me. James C. Ross (Cal) born 1838 was married first to Jane Meadows and second to my great grandmother Mary Ann Cain Creekmore after the death of their spouses. They lived and died in Crawford Co. Ark. but both came from Whitley County Ky. to Ark. Are these relatives of yours Debra. I have some history on the Ross family. Contact me if you would like to exchange information. What time frame are you looking for a Guilford Ratliff? There are several Guilford Ratliff's in the family. There is Guilford b. 1810 who married Mahala and Guilford, son of James who married Mary Mars, and Guilford who married M. T.? and so on. Guilford and Mahala Ratliff are my Great Great Grandparents. Guilford's father, Jobe Ratliff left Virginia with his three brothers and his father just after 1800 and were in Illinois by about 1808, Guilford Ratliff was born September 11, 1810 in Madison County, Illinois. The Ratliff family migrated into Arkansas and were in Crawford County, Arkansas by about 1830. Guilford met and married Mahala ( last name still unknown) between 1827- 1828, most likely in Crawford County, Arkansas---- It was thought that Mahala may have had some Indian Heritage but this has never been proved. It is known that she was born in Kentucky about 1807-1809. By the mid 1840's the Ratliff families were moving toward Texas. Guilford and Mahala settled around Florence, Williamson County, Texas and were enumerated on the 1850 Williamson County Census The 1850 Census of Williamson/Milam County, Texas enumerates:.. Guilford Ratliff age 41, Mahaley 45, Archillus 21, James C. 18, Joseph 14, Thompson 12, Delilah 10, Job. M. 7, John 3, and Winslow Turner as common laborer. The 1860 Census enumerates: Mahala Ratliff 51 Thompson Ratliff 22 Lelila Ratliff (Delilah) 20 G. W. Wadkins (Laborer) 18 John M. Ratliff ( Job M.) 18 John R. Ratliff 14 Mary M. Ratliff 10 Mildred M. Ratliff 6 John ( Jobe) Ratliff (Father-in-law) 78 Agnes Ratliff( Mother-in-law) 77 Hope this helps. J. I have seen both of these names corresond with IL. Think maybe Mahala died and he married Mary or he called her Mary, tho one of the childrens wedding refers to Mahala as a second thought. I don't know how long my greatgrandfather, William Fisher, lived in Crawford County before he died in 1964. I do have that he is buried in Gill Cemetery there in Van Buren. Hoping someone can help me find out something about his life there along with his exact date of death and a photo of his headstone. Thanks in advance for any and all help, Lainee

Franklin County Land Patents by Virginia McPail , Arkansas Historical Commission, One Capital Mall, Little Rock, Ar. 72221.
