    3. Hi Dan, first thank you for your reply, my grandfather was full of story about when and where he was born, he changed the date and place a lot, on his SS application his father name is listed as John W. Dodd. believe born TN and his mother as Maria Adcock. unknown, both, do you happen to know anything about Sam Loving who took Aunt Francis daughter of Ester after her death. Seems that Sam was best friend of Robert and Sam know Roberts' parents or so it has been said. Thank you Again. 3. I have tried to send the note Penny sent about a decendents reunion of those who fought at Pea Ridge but I have not been able to get it to go. Everytime I hit send it come up saying they can't find this name. I delete it and try again and the same thing. I finely gave up. I know what you mean about losing things. I spend half my time looking for something. Betty Dear Wolf-Adams Family Members, I wanted to give you some highlights from our 2006 Wolf-Adams Family Reunion, held at the Salesville Community Center , June 24, 2006. We want to thank Dorothy Boynton for once again getting out Reunion together. Those that didn't attend missed a great opportunity to share Family Histories and to attend a Wolf Family wedding at the Wolf House. A descendent from Major Jacob Wolf son, William M. Wolf, (Gwen Wolf's line) was married on the Front Porch (river side) of the Wolf House that afternoon. She was the first Wolf family member to be married at the Wolf House for many years. Family members met at the Saleville Community Center for coffee and donuts that morning and to get in a little visiting before meeting everyone at the Wolf House , at 10 am , for the Family Reunion Photo. Next we went to the Wolf Family Cemetery. Bob Bounds and Emmit Acklin gave us information on Wolf, and allied families, buried at the Cemetery. Several photo's were taken at the Cemetery also. One was of Gwen Wolf, 94 years young, visiting the grave of her gggrandmother, Mildard Mereidth Wolf, first wife of Major Jacob Wolf. She was buried at the Cemetery in 1823, shortly after the family moved from KY to AR. We then met back at the Community Building for lunch with a business meeting following. Thanks Dorothy, Betty, Noreen and JoAnn in getting the food together. Penny Culver, President of the Wolf Family ORG.., opened the meeting. Each family member was ask to give a personal Wolf-Adams Family History and to add their names to the Family Tree and to sign the Wolf-Adams Family member scroll. Bob Bounds and Emmit Acklin gave us a update on the Wolf Family and Norfork History Books they are producing. They have two completed and are working on the third . They are doing the book to raise money to preserve and for the upkeep on the Wolf Family Cemetery. They want to raise money, to set up a trust, to keep the Cemetery mowed and preserved after they are not longer able to be the caretakers of it . I thinks this is a wonderful thing they are doing. They helped to bring the Cemetery from a jungle like mess to a beautiful Cemetery. Lets help keep it that way. Each book is $25.00. Update: the third book is complete and for sale. The fourth is almost complete. If you are looking for a Christmas gifts, they would make a great gift. You can order the books from Bob, Emmit, or Linda Bradbury. Linda's email is b/l@centurytel.net, Emmit's email is emmitdacklin@centurytel.net and his mailing address is, Emmit D.Acklin P.O. BOX 81 Norfork, AR 72658-8100 Emmit tells me they have some of No. 1 and No. 2 Books left , with No 3 Book completed and for sale. No. 4 will be out shortly. They plan to do four issues in all. After Bob and Emmit addressed the group we were treaded to some wonderful poetry. Family member , JoAnn Osborne, read several poems she had written. You missed a treat if you were not present. Next family member and President Penny present us with a short History on AR, Starting with it's first settlers, the AR Indian Tribes, and other earlier settlers, like our Wolf and Adams family among others. Many famous people have lived and visited in AR. Some were Sequoyah, who wrote the Cherokee alphabet, Dave Crochet, Sam Houston, The Clinton's and many more , to many to list here, and of course Sam Walton. Many Wolf family members help make much of AR History. Member from this family have cover much ground, traveling much of the world and one all the way into outer space. Penny covered much more than I have included here. Thanks Penny it was very interesting facts on our AR history and people. AR had such a rich history I take pride in knowing my ancestors were a part of it. Dorothy Boynton, our Family Historian, furnished each family member present with a Wolf -Adams Family Information Pack and CD, and gave us a update on new family information. Dorothy has contributed so much of her time and money in preserving our Wolf Family History, I for one would like to thank her for all the hard work and long hours she spends in gathering and persevering our history. Next on the agenda was to decide if we would like to continue with the Wolf Family Reunion, all present voted to continue. With Penny declining to continue as president, Dorothy made a motion to nominate Larry McQueary as president, Betty seconded, all voted yes. Noreen made a motion to nominate Betty to continue as Treasure. Dorothy seconded, all voted yes. All motion passed. Family members present voted to continue the Membership dues of $5.00 for each member per year. Dues will be use to help fray cost of the Reunions or to preserve the Cemetery. Dues for 2006-2007 are due and payable to Betty Brunson, P.0.B. 40, Franklin, AR 72536. Paid members for 2006-2007 year are: Betty Brunson Dorothy Boynton Lousie Wolf Carol Wolf Wayne H. Wolf Noreen Vickery JoAnn Osborne Larry McQueary Penny Culver We would like everyone to make plans to attend our 2007 Wolf Family Reunion. It will be held again at the Salesville Community Center, Saturday, June 23, 2007. We will give more information for the meeting at a later date. For those who don't know where Salesville Community Center is, it is about 3 miles north on Norfork AR on Hwy 5 at intersection 177 Hwy. It is a rock building north of the Hwy joining the Fire Dept. Building. The building is a converted old School House. Come join us and enjoy a day of Wolf-Adams Family Fellowship and History. Another plus would be to enjoy our beautiful AR. Norfork River runs into the White River at Norfork AR and the Norfork Lake is only a few miles north. You might like to check out the City of Norfork website, www.Norfork.net, for more information on the area. Norfork and Baxter County plus other adjoining counties have much to see and do. We will be looking forward to meeting everyone at our 2007 Wolf and Adams Family Reunion. If you know any family member not on this list please foward to them. Merry Christmas and Wonderful New Year to all. Wolf and Adams Family Member, Treas., Wolf Family ORG. 3. James D. CHAPMAN: James was born Nov 1858 in Mississippi, and married 18 Aug 1895 in Crawford Co. Mary Albina LAYMAN. His household appeared on the 1930 census of Van Buren, Crawford Co., Arkansas, as "Jim Chatman." It shows his birthplace as Mississippi, his father's as Alabama, and his mother's as Georgia. On the earlier 1900 and 1910 censuses of Lees Creek, Crawford Co., his name was listed as James D. Chapman. The 1910 census shows that Mary Albena was his his second wife, and that she then had 6 children, 4 still living. We don't know anything about his earlier marriage. William H. CHAPMAN: Nearby James CHAPMAN on the 1900 census was the household of William H. Chapman and wife Letitia and children. William was age 45 born Mississippi, his father's birthplace listed as Georgia and his mother's as Alabama. Surely William and James were brothers. Indeed, that is confirmed by the 1860 census of Panola Co., Mississippi where William and James are shown with with their mother and some siblings. Unfortunately that census used mostly initials for the names. We have never established the parents nor all the siblings names for James and William. Any help will be appreciated.

    3. The CA death index lists Robert's birthplace as MO, and his mother's maiden name as Adcock. That might help identify which John Dodd was the father. The California Death Index lists Robert's birth year as 1884. The Social Security Death Index lists his birth year as 1889. The 1930 census of Westville, Adair Co., OK shows his age as 42 born Missouri (so born ca 1888). It shows his father 's birthplace as KY and his mother's as Mississippi. However, the 1920 census of Mulberry, Crawford Co., AR lists him as age 37 born MO (so born ca 1883), and his father's birthplace as Texas and his mother's as Mississippi. 3. Greig, Thanks about the note on Stiwell. I had always hear of Stilwell being the Strawberry Capital. When I started working with the Crawford County Genealogical Society I ran across some of the old newspaper stories about Van Buren and it's Strawberry Festival. I am sure Watsonville, Ca. holds that distinction today. I visited one strawberry farm there a few years ago. He had 7,200 acres of strawberries in one patch. Picked with harvesting aids (big machines that people lay on to pick) that allowed 16 rows to be picked at once. A belt carries the berries to the center of the machine for boxing. Berries picked one day will be to all US markets within 48 hours. Fascinating !! 3. Just a note on cotton growing in the hill country of Crawford County. Farmers stopped growing it in the hill country because the land was so poor that you got very few bowls on a plant. The cotton growing era of the hill country was after the Civil War. Slavery was not ever in the economic equation of growing cotton in the hill country. Cotton picking was done by family and neighbors with a few transits (gypsies of which we had for picking strawberries too. There is a permanent colony of gypsies living in Crawford County now. Some hill country farmers did lease land in the river bottoms to grow their cash crop of cotton. This was after the time of slavery. If you study the sociology of the hill and mountain country of Crawford County at anytime you will find very few if any black people involved. There were a few "slaves" brought into the hill country by their owners (either white or Cherokee) before the civil war.
