I was obviously mistaken about the order of listings in the book. Please do forgive me. Nonetheless, "History in Headstones" is an extremely valuable resource IMHO, and I appreciate those who voluntarily slogged through mud for hours and hours and squinted at old tombstones, in order to create this record. In spite of some mistakes, and regardless of order, I applaud them. And yes, I am talking about the book, not the index. Now then, the index is available to anyone who wants it. Someone on this list has a copy and will make copies, but that person hasn't put him/herself forward. I will be glad to get copies for anyone who wants them. And yes, I am talking about the index, not the book. Any more questions? Thank you, Chandra
For all those who are interested: You may contact Doris West (co-author) at (501) 474-2218 for a copy of the book. The cost is $20 for the book plus $5 shipping. Chandra
Chandra: Don't know where you got your info but you obviously haven't looked very closely at "History..." ....the listings ARE NOT in burial order...!!! I've done extensive research with this book and know that for a fact. There are a couple of indexes available by private individuals for "History..." but nothing on the open market. Tricia Angel
All, Actually, there is an index available, and it is quite good. The information in History in Headstones is arranged in BURIAL order, to show which graves are next to each other. Researching Daniel and Stafford's from Mulberry and Booneville, AR. Jim Daniel was Mayor of Mulberry. JIMMIE
Nan, There is a book called History in Headstone that lists all the marked graves in Crawford County by cemetery. An alphabetical index is also available. I am planning on trying to get a copy of this book - if anyone else is interested please let me know. I understand it is $25 to have the book mailed to you. Hi: My Esther Hinds Eppler (Widow Hinds mar. Jonathan Eppler)) was alive in the Van Buren, Crawford Co. 1850 census. But she is not in the 1860. Could someone tell me if there is an alpha index to burials in Crawford Co. cemeteries. I'm looking for John HInds, David Hinds and Esther (Hinds) Eppler. Regards, Nan
Hi: Are there old mortuary records available in Crawford Co? I'm interested in the 1840s, 50s & 60s. Nan
Linda asked: "My question is, can anyone offer an explanation as to why people were in Crawford that early....was it made up mostly of men/women from Fort Smith? If so, is there a list of military men posted at Fort Smith during that time frame." Linda: I believe we'll have to cross the river and study Ft. Smith's history to find out more about why our ancestors immigrated. Perhaps the early papers of Ft. Smith can tell us. Nan

For all of you interested in History in Headstones, please be aware that the book was completed around 1969 and IS NOT INDEXED!! The information is, however, very helpful (though not always accurate) and has been put together by listings within each cemetery of Crawford County. But to add to the frustration of no index, the individual listings within each cemetery are in no particular order and are not alphabetized. I do have a database of the names in the book and can pull names up by name or cemetery and would be happy to help anyone. Tricia Angel
Tonia, Thanks for the cemetery lookups for my Ritchie and Campbell's!!! Seymore Campbell is my GGgranddad and I now have his birth and death date. So many Ritchies buried in Crawford cty I was happy. Again thank you for your kindness. Reva Myers
Reva, Excuse me for butting in here. There is a Seamore Campbell, born March 2, 1816 and died April 29, 1888 in the Oliver Springs Cemetery near Rudy. Maybe that is the right one. Reva: "History in Headstones: Crawford Co., AR" lists a Symour Campbell, born 3/2/1816, died 4/29/1888 as being buried at Oliver Springs Cemetery, which is located in the Oliver Springs community, which is 5 miles north of Van Buren and 4 miles west of Rudy. Tricia Angel
Chandra, If, just if you notice any Campbell stones there and post it to the list you'd be a jewel! I think my Seamore Campbell is there. Enjoy your up coming trip with or without seeing a Campbell! Reva Campbell Myers
Hi, my name is Chandra (DAWSON) MARTIN. I subscribed to this list a month or so ago, and then just sat there like a dummy waiting for good stuff to show up. (OK, wasn't quite that bad - I was occupied with a surname list). So today it suddenly dawns on me that I can find people (*DUH*) by just asking!! Are there any descendants out there of the following Crawford / Sebastian County surnames: DAWSON, TEMPLE, O'KELLEY, PATE, BACCHUS, COLEMAN, BURGESS Please hook up with me! I am just getting started really, and would like a boost. I'm charmed with the idea of meeting more couisins, and -- Don't worry, I'll give you credit if I write a best-seller. :-) Also, does anyone know how to contact the caretaker of Love Cemetery? I want to ask questions about some O'Kelley stones that have just initials on them. Thanks, Chandra
Hi Listers: I found a tax record showing my ggggrandfather, Reuben Hamilton, in Crawford as early as 1832. Another distant relative has an abstract of a newspaper where Reuben offered a reward for anyone finding the body of his son, Audley Hamilton, who had drowned in the Arkansas river (dated: 1833). The winter of 1833 was horrible, with the Arkansas over flowing her banks. My question is, can anyone offer an explanation as to why people were in Crawford that early....was it made up mostly of men/women from Fort Smith? If so, is there a list of military men posted at Fort Smith during that time frame. Linda Hamilton Hart [email protected]
There is a Mt. McCurry, yes! I am planning to go there soon. (I live "next door" in Fort Smith) Chandra [email protected] wrote: > I am trying to find out if this is a cemetery in Rudy,Ark.
