    3. Peggy, According to the Conway County History Book "Conway County-Our Land, Our Home, Our People", Major William Lewis, his son Stephen and Dr. Nimrod Menifee settled on the Arkansas River about 1820. In 1825 Lewis established the first trading post in Conway County and called it "Lewisburg". It says that in the spring of 1861, many firms and businesses closed their doors upon the arrival of federal troops which made the town a barrack. It also says that in May 1860, 123 men left Lewisburg. They were sent first to MO and then to Pea Ridge. 78 were killed, 20 returned wounded. In May 1861, a group went to Fayetteville, AR where there was no place for them. Some returned and some went other places. Hope this helps you some. If you are interested in a copy of the Conway County History Book, please look on the Conway County Gen. page. The ordering information is on that page. Euna
