Article found in The Family Tree Aug-Sept 1999 Section A SCV locating mill workers: The Roswell Mills Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans would like to locate descendants of more than 600 women mill workers who were arrested and deported to Indiana and Kentucky following the burning of the Roswell and New Manchester Mills by General Sherman on July 6-8 1864. This story is chronicled by Caroline Dillman in 'Days Gone By' a history of Roswell and in several articles written by local historians. Very few women and children returned to Roswell after the war and the mystery remains to this day as to what actually happened to them. The local organization of the Sons of Confederate Veterans elected their name, Roswell Mills Camp after this episode in the history of our community. The Camp's letterhead stationery depicts the Roswell mill as it looked prior to its burning. The Roswell Mills Camp has a project to erect a monument to honor the millworkers. The Camp desires to locate descendants of the women and children deported to be included in the monument unveiling ceremony. Descendants are requested to contact the Camp by writing: Roswell Mills Camp No. 154, 1575 Old Alabama Road, Suite 207-128, Roswell, GA 30076.
