Article found in The Family Tree Aug-Sept 1999 Section A SCV locating mill workers: The Roswell Mills Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans would like to locate descendants of more than 600 women mill workers who were arrested and deported to Indiana and Kentucky following the burning of the Roswell and New Manchester Mills by General Sherman on July 6-8 1864. This story is chronicled by Caroline Dillman in 'Days Gone By' a history of Roswell and in several articles written by local historians. Very few women and children returned to Roswell after the war and the mystery remains to this day as to what actually happened to them. The local organization of the Sons of Confederate Veterans elected their name, Roswell Mills Camp after this episode in the history of our community. The Camp's letterhead stationery depicts the Roswell mill as it looked prior to its burning. The Roswell Mills Camp has a project to erect a monument to honor the millworkers. The Camp desires to locate descendants of the women and children deported to be included in the monument unveiling ceremony. Descendants are requested to contact the Camp by writing: Roswell Mills Camp No. 154, 1575 Old Alabama Road, Suite 207-128, Roswell, GA 30076. Hi all. I am back on line now. In case you hadn't checked the page in the last few days, I finished loading records for the Conway Co. Marriage Books A&B, generously donated for use on our page by Shirley Shewmake Goodner. Am still working on the 1860 Cenus- the census taker had some horrendous handwriting. I will however, begin loading the pages of this census as I complete them. -- Lisa C. Shearin Help preserve Old Lake Cemetery, Dover, Pope County, Arkansas. Looking for the ancestors and descendants of JOHN TUCKER, born in 1765/66 in the Missouri Territory. In subsequent census the same area was called Perry County, Arkansas and Conway County, Arkansas. >From a will generously given to me by Helen Kirtlan-Fingando of Sacramento, CA we find that John was married to a woman named HAPPY TRAVICE and had three children: 1. ELIZABETH TUCKER, who married a LUCAS. 2. SALLY TUCKER, who married a MEDLOCK 3. LARRY TUCKER It looks like these children were born between 1785-1788. There was no divorce. The will states,"...I give and bequeath to my lawful wife, Happy Travice, by maiden name, one dollar as all of that portion of my estate hereby intended to be conveyed to her or such heirs of hers as may have been born since her separation from my bed and board to be paid by my said Executrix and Executor in the name of God, Amen." His "beloved" companion, after the separation from Happy Travice was FANNY SMITH. By Fanny Smith he had: 1. MARTHA TUCKER, born about 1812, who married a CRAIN. 2. JAMES N. TUCKER, born about 1808 3. WILLIAM T. TUCKER, born about 1810, married Paulina Adelina Humphrey 4. ALFRED TUCKER, born about 1814, married Jane Humphrey (sister to Paulina) 5. MELISSA TUCKER, who married a FITSWORTH (he died 1837, Conway County, AR) 6. JEFFERSON TUCKER, born about 1818, married 1847 in Louisiana 7. FANNY TUCKER, born about 1820. These are the children of Alfed and Jane Humphrey Tucker: 1. William F. Tucker, b. about 1833 2. Feraby J. Tucker, b. about 1834 3. Ashley Tucker, b. about 1837 4. Perry Tucker, b. about 1840 5. Hampton Tucker, b. about 1842 6. Melissa Tucker, b. about 1843 7. John Jefferson Tucker (our ancestor), b. about 1845 in Louisiana, d. 1894 in Conroe, Texas, married Anneta Whitcomb, 1875 in Houston, Texas 8. Owen Tucker, b. about 1847 These are the children of William and Paulina Tucker: 1. Janes N. Tucker, born 1835, near Baton Rouge LA 2. Narcissus Tucker, born Aug. 13, 1836, Baton Rouge LA, married George Fisher, Thomas Kirtlan 3. Elmira Tucker, born March 3, 1841, Perry Co. AR,married William Chamberlain Gann 4. Alfred Tucker, born 1843, Conway Co. AR 5. Jefferson Tucker, born 1847, near Baton Rouge, LA Thanks everyone! Jana Rooke San Jose, CA
(Sorry about being a duplicate for those of you on more than one list.) I want to first apologize for the length of this request. I am providing ALL the information that I have. If anyone has any suggestions or recognizes any of the names I would deeply appreciate any/all help in scaling this brick wall. I am researching my husbands side of the family. His g-grandmother was suppose to be a Cherokee Indian. I have no proof of this or any evidence to suggest that this is true, only family stories. I do not know where she was born or who her parents were. The only evidence I have of her life is two marriage licenses one for 1890 and one for 1897 and the 1900, 1910, 1920 census records. She was born ~1870 - 1873, maybe as late as 1875 died 1942. (I have been unable to locate a death certificate on her only an obituary no social security either.) She was suppose to have a brother, Jim or Wayne Grant but I can't find him listed on anything! She was married 3 times and had children by all three husbands. All her children are deceased. She lived all her life in AR as far as I can tell. The counties I found her in, Jackson, Conway, Yell, Lonoke. She may have been born in OK, but it would have been before OK became a state. The names I have are as follows: Dora Adeline Grant (1st marriage) , M Malone, (children) Pearl married a Hail/Hale, Myrtle b ~1892 married W F Paine (2nd marriage) , Noah Strong Edmon(d)son, (children) Houston Grantson married Mabel McArthur, Charlie married Rose Senbill (3rd marriage) , Joseph Wesley Carlock, (children) Ruby several marriages, Hurbert married a Fry ANY suggestions would be appreciated. I have not found any new information in more than two years. At this point I have exhausted all my leads. Thank you to every one in advance for any help that I receive. ____________________________ reply to henson@rmi.net web page: http://www.rmi.net/~henson Names I am researching: BRENT(S), GRANT, EDMON(D)SON, HENSON, MCARTHUR ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

Though Casa is located in Perry County, and Petit Jean in Conway Co., the distance between the two is approx. 9.48 miles...not sure if that would be considered walking distance by today's standards, but things were different. I cannot find a listing of a cemetery by that name close to Casa, the closest cemeteries to that city/town are: Faubus Cemetery -approx. 3.84 miles, Aunt Dilly approx 4.68 miles Needmore approx 3.68 miles Birta Cemetery approx 5.25 miles (Yell Co.) Hamilton Cemetery 5.66 m. (Perry Co.) there are some closer to Petit Jean State Park, if you are interested. -- Lisa C. Shearin Help preserve Old Lake Cemetery, Dover, Pope County, Arkansas.
