I have a friend who is an Expert on the Cival War. He says there was a Union Fort there at Lewisberg, located on the highest point of land overlooking the river. It was infected (infested?) by measles and pneumonia and General Joe Shelby kept his Confederate troops well clear of it. Peggy, According to the Conway County History Book "Conway County-Our Land, Our Home, Our People", Major William Lewis, his son Stephen and Dr. Nimrod Menifee settled on the Arkansas River about 1820. In 1825 Lewis established the first trading post in Conway County and called it "Lewisburg". It says that in the spring of 1861, many firms and businesses closed their doors upon the arrival of federal troops which made the town a barrack. It also says that in May 1860, 123 men left Lewisburg. They were sent first to MO and then to Pea Ridge. 78 were killed, 20 returned wounded. In May 1861, a group went to Fayetteville, AR where there was no place for them. Some returned and some went other places. Hope this helps you some. If you are interested in a copy of the Conway County History Book, please look on the Conway County Gen. page. The ordering information is on that page. Euna
Lewisburg, Arkansas was south of Morrilton on the Arkansas River. I don't think it was a fort but a post. My ggrandfather was stationed there and I have his discharge which reads Discharged from the service of the United States this 13th day of June 1865 at Lewisburg, Arkansas it dosen't say fort or post. He was with Company M 3rd regiment of Arkansas Cavalry (union). He also married there at Lewisburg which was a town. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
I don't know the answer to your question but I certainly would like to know what information you have regarding the fort or any of the families in that area. My Great Great Grandfather register for the civil war there and has been reported to have died in Tupelo where-ever that is? (Not sure if it is the Tupelo in MS) Thanks, Paul -----Original Message----- From: ARCONWAY-D-request@rootsweb.com <ARCONWAY-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: ARCONWAY-D@rootsweb.com <ARCONWAY-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, October 07, 1999 10:19 PM Subject: ARCONWAY-D Digest V99 #131

If anyone out there has cemetery listings for Conway County, I would appreciate a lookup on Sarah E. Shackelford. She would have been born around 1853. It is rumored that she returned to the Dardanelle area after her husband passed away. Any help with this will be appreciated. Kathy Lohmeyer

It has been about a month since I posted this the last time, so I am trying again. I want to first apologize for the length of this request. I am providing ALL the information that I have. If anyone has any suggestions or recognizes any of the names I would deeply appreciate any/all help in scaling this brick wall. I am researching my husbands side of the family. His g-grandmother was suppose to be a Cherokee Indian. I have no proof of this or any evidence to suggest that this is true, only family stories. I do not know where she was born or who her parents were. The only evidence I have of her life is two marriage licenses one for 1890(Jackson County) and one for 1897(Conway County) and the 1900(Conway County), 1910(Yell County), 1920(Lonoke County) census records. She was born ~1870 - 1873, maybe as late as 1875 died 1942. (I have been unable to locate a death certificate on her only an obituary no social security either.) She was suppose to have a brother, Jim or Wayne Grant but I can't find him listed on anything! She was married 3 times and had children by all three husbands. All her children are deceased. She lived all her life in AR as far as I can tell (according to the censes records). She may have been born in OK, but it would have been before OK became a state. The names I have are as follows: Dora Adeline GRANT (1st marriage), M MALONE, (children) Pearl married a HAIL/HALE, Myrtle b ~1892 married W F PAINE (2nd marriage), Noah Strong EDMON(D)SON, (children) Houston Grantson married Mabel MCARTHUR, Charlie married Rose SENBILL (3rd marriage), Joseph Wesley CARLOCK, (children) Ruby several marriages, Hurbert married a FRY ANY suggestions would be appreciated. I have not found any new information in more than two years. At this point I have exhausted all my leads. Thank you to every one in advance for any help that I receive. ____________________________ reply to henson@rmi.net web page: http://www.rmi.net/~henson Names I am researching: BRENT(S), GRANT, EDMON(D)SON, HENSON, MCARTHUR ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

Thanks, once more, to Euna Beavers! She has given us another BIG clue to our heritage! Our message to this List read: " Looking for information on John Nisler who married Mary Hammond in Conway Co., AR. John was born about 1880-1885. Who are John's parents? His siblings are: Nannie B. Nisler, b. 06 April 1885; A.S. (? don't know name) Nisler; C.C. (don't know name) Nisler; Robert Nisler; Henrietta Nisler, who possibly married a Cagle. Any help in right direction would be great" Euna sent us the marriage dates of John L. Nisler and Mary Hammond as 02 Sept 1897 . . . this lead to an email to another researcher who emailed back --- the lineage of the Nisler family coming from Von Weil, Wurtemburg, German in 1730-1740 to Charleston, South Carolina to Cabanus Co., North Carolina, then on to Benton Co., Tennessee, then to Conway Co. Arkansas!! Its amazing how well this list works. Thanks Euna . . . you have done it again! and thanks to everyone who works so hard to keep this wonderful service available to us.
