Thanks James. I was afraid that Elias might have passed away by the 1880 census. I would love to know if anyone might have any info as to where he might be buried. Also Elias Sutton had a daughter Mary that might have married a Jim or James Wise around 1865, so if any of the Wise researchers are out there , info please !!! thanks again Sandy Dodson Tomlin
Sandy: Good to hear from you again. I didn't find Elias Sutton on the 1880 census. Now, before anybody gets upset I know I hit the reply button and I know I am replying through the list. I am doing it for a reason. Sometimes when someone doesn't show up on a census, that has been transcribed to where we can read it faster, doesn't mean they were not there. As much care that is taken to catch everybody, sometimes they were missed. But most of the time it could just be a transcribing error. Anybody that has ever sat for hours reading a microfilm will understand this. For instance, One of Sandy's ancestors was Seaborn Eugene Camp, but on the transcribed census he is recorded as LEABORN KEMP. Now, we all know his name and who he married ( Almedia Maness - daughter of Rufus Maness ), but I couldn't find him on a regular search. I did find him as I was just stumbling through the Columbia Census. Also one of my ancestors, Dicey ( Maness ) Wilkerson was listed as a Wilson in 1870 on the actual census. The children's names and birthdates matched but the last name was wrong. There are many reasons for this that I will not go into all of them, but it happened. One reason for these mistakes is the roads were not as they are now and sometimes just a creek was an obstacle and the info was from a neighbor or grocery store operator. Just imagine Ike Godsey trying to name all of the Waltons and their birthdates. Anyway, the point is, if they are not found on the first try, Don't give up. Most of the fun is in the hunting and sharing information with others. James Peterson Texarkana, Ark. Descendant of Peterson, Grant, Wilkerson, and Maness families from Columbia County.
Thanks James you never offend !!!! You've been a source of info and inspiration for me for a while. Continue the good work and never let the feelings of a few stop you from helping many. We all like to express our opinions and that's what makes our world an interesting place Sandy Dodson Tomlin
I agree that this should be a board to share our families and questions. I enjoy reading about all the families. You never know when you might just run across some unexpected info. Thanks to all who have offered to help and share. Keep up the good work Sandy Dodson Tomlin
Thanks James, You have already been a wealth of info for me in my exploration of my families. Could you see if there is any info on Elias Sutton? I'm thinking that Elias Sutton might have been the father to my Martin Sutton. Martin Sutton was my Great-grandfather. Martin was the father of Jane Adeline Sutton who married Joseph Dodson. Also Martin's widow became William Fagan Dodson's second wife. You know that story well. I've hit a brick wall with Martin. Thanks James !!! Sandy Dodson Tomlin Dodson,Maness, Camp,Britt,Story,Sutton

John, When did your Williams family arrive in Calhoun county? I've got a lot of resources for that county and I'd be glad to do some lookups for you. I too descend from two separate Williams lines from Calhoun, but neither of which orginated in Great Britain. What was your ancestors name? This could be interesting. John, I looked for your John P. Williams and wife Agness in all of the counties of Arkansas. I could not find them anywhere. Do you know where they were born? Or the date of birth? Maybe they were not in Arkansas by 1880, I will look other places if you know where they may have been. I want to help, so give me more information. Carleen
I agree with you all. Genealogy is helping people. Who knows, someone may request a lookup for a surname someone else had no idea might have been in Columbia County. You might find a new relative you never knew existed. Mary in Houston, Tx [email protected] wrote: > I think it is entirely apropos to tell the list who you are searching for in > Columbia Co. A lot of people does not realize that when they click on the 'Reply" button that their email will go to the list and not the individual that posted to the list. I am a listowner and I usually let this to happen...who knows someone may not be able to read their email for a while and if another researcher of the same surname has already asked for the information, then it saves both the poster and researcher time. Hello, Could you please see if there is a Thomas Curtis listed. His wife's name was Ruth. Thank you. Ellen Eaves Anderson [email protected]
James, Are there any Youngs in your book? My great-grandmother, Rebecca YOUNG was there by 1900. Is that too early? My other side, great grandpa was there in 1900 too, his name was William BASHAM, and his sister was Dorcus MAYS, and she was real "churchy". Married a couple of preachers in Ala, and may have m a 3rd in Columbia Co. too! Carleen
