Stephenie, I've been started out doing genealogy 17 years ago researching my family tree, but found out that I'm one of those people who love spending time in cemeteries and musty old courthouse vaults! I'm so fortunate to be able to do what I love and help people at the same time. Besides, you meet the nicest folks.......it's all a blessing. Is anyone researching the COUCH family?
Are you aware that the "history of columbia county arkansas" by Nettie Hicks Killgore, has been reprinted? it was first printed in 1947. I bought a copy 2-3 years ago from SO WE AR (Southwest Arkansas Genealogical Society. I don't remember the price -- But had a lot of my COUCH family in it. There is an index.
I'M NOT looking for him -- I have made contact with him and there is a Couch connection with him -- thought you might have the same line and more info on my Couches! ha In a message dated 3/30/02 8:58:37 AM, [email protected] writes: << Kay, There's probably a Jim Dodson somewhere in my family heritage but no Couch that I'm aware of. James, When you get it on line, I will be glad to furnish what I have of the John Richard Vanwinkle family of Magnolia, Columbia Co, AR. If you cannot find anyone to help with the web site, let me know. Michael Van Winkle -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 29, 2002 11:35 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Columbia County Website I have entertained the idea of a site for Columbia County for some time. I know we have the USGENWEB site as do all the other counties have one and this list as well, but neither is satisfying our needs like they should. I am talking about a regular site that we could all visit and put in our family information, discuss info with each other, and any thing else we think would help each other as well as ourselves. I am mostly interested in Magnolia and the Philadelphia community down on Burnt Bridge Road, but I also have enough sense to know that these people moved from time to time across the Louisiana line and other parts of the county. We could start our own cemetery info section as well as church info and anything we thought could help each other. I think it would be fun as well as helpful to have a place to tell some of the stories as well as some of the histories of our families. When someone dies, they are not really gone as long as someone is left to tell about them and remember the things they did. When we are gone these people might as well have never lived. I would like to make a place where they could go on forever. Now, here comes the problem. When it comes to a website or making one, I am about as smart as a head of lettuce, and I am talking about the dumber type of lettuce. I know there is someone on this list that can help me do this or a couple of us could get it done. OK- how about it? This Barney Hugh Reeves was in the same Reeves family as my step-grandmother, because I remember meeting him at one of the Reeves re-unions when they held it at Magnolia. I use to get an invite to their re-unions, but didn't go to another one and they quit inviting me. They always held the other ones between Dallas and Tyler and that area. Pete
Othilla-- W. H. Reeves, 24 Jan 1843 - 15 Jan 1920 is listed in the Shiloh Cemetery at Lamartine, north of Waldo AR, off Hwy 371, formerly Hwy 19. Thanks Ann, Jeannette & Pete for your pointers and info
Othilla: Reeves is a name that I don't descend from, but my step-grandmother was a Reeves. She was born in Ala. in 1891, but married my grandfather in Columbia County about 1919. Her name was Minnie Orilla Reeves, her sister Rosa married a Sneed, her brother Coleman married a Maness, and their was a brother named Richard that is buried at the Philadelphia cemetery. There was also a half-sister that lived at Dalby Springs, Texas, but time has took her name from me. The reason I am telling you this is because they may or maynot come from the same Reeves. Stranger things have happened. I am pretty sure she was born in Cullman County, Ala. Pete
Hi-- You can go to http://www.whitepages.com/ . Type in only the surname and the town and state. All the Reeves (and there are a lot) or any other surname will come up for you. Ann in north LA
You might call Barney Hugh Reeves, 870-696-3897, for information on the Reeves family. He was formerly the County Judge for Columbia County and is now with a state agency in Little Rock - so he lives in Little Rock through the week, but is sometimes here on weekends. Both he and his wife, Nelda Furlow Reeves [her father was Sheriff of Columbia County some years ago], are related to many people in southern Columbia County, and could probably tell you who to contact if they cannot help you. [Some of the other Reeves in the local telephone book are his sons, so I would start with him.] Also, you might call Kitty Reeves Jean, 870-234-5433, who is active in the SoWeAr Genealogy Society in this area. [SoWeAr = Southwest Arkansas]. If you want addresses, let me know and I'll send them. James, I would love to see a site about the very unique history of Columbia County too. It's very true that if something isn't done that our beloved families and their history will die with us. I too am a computer dummie but I gladly donate any memories or pictures that I have. This is a wonderful idea !!! Sandy Dodson Tomlin
Kay, There's probably a Jim Dodson somewhere in my family heritage but no Couch that I'm aware of. Give me more info on your Jim and I'll check it out. I'm from the George Washington Dodson, William Fagan Dodson line. Sandy Dodson Tomlin
