    2. Yes, Charles would have a fit if I let it get away. He has found some Sinclairs in Kingsland related to us from the phone book. He was able to call them and connect. That was where a lot of our Sinclairs lived. My grandmother, his aunt was born in Shark Ark. Thanks, Pat

    3. Have You checked the courthouse to see if Alexander might have left a will? , if he had a son that was a Doctor, he must have been quite well off and would have had property to leave his children. Have You found him on 1840 Census? Did your Dr. live in same area in 1850?....just some ideas....

    3. I have been subscribing to this for a few weeks and have found it very interesting. And now I have finally decided to ask a question and see if anybody can help me. According to my family records I a descendant of Alexander Campbell McMurtrey (b. 1792 in NC d. 1849 in Cleveland County, Arkansas) through his son Dr. John Benson McMurtrey (b. 1825 in Shelby County, AL d. June 1862 in the Civil War.) I have listed that my 2nd Great Grand Uncle is the Col Elisha L McMurtrey and he is mentioned several times on the Cleveland County web page. I have never been able to find any record of the existance of Dr. John Benson McMurtrey, I have his DOB and DOD and his Civil War record but nothing that states anything about his family. I have searched through the Cleveland County website and every other geneology and have never come across anything. I was wondering if anybody knows anything else about the McMurtrey's and can help me find out who all the children of Alexander Campbell McMurtrey are. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you, John Baldwin (3rd Great Grandson of Alexander Campbell McMurtrey)

I *am* really sorry if I offended any of you. I am trying to think of a genealogically related question but I can not right now so I am sending this off topic post 'cause I think I need to get it off my chest. Again, sorry! Cristal

I have the Sinclair line that Charles and I are from copied off if you would like to have it for others that may need to work from it. Charles and I paid for a copy that someone did over 50 pages on. We happened to fit into that family. The guy at the copy shop gave me half off today and bound them for free. (punched holes and put a plastic cover and spine on them . I am putting it all behind me and going forward to a better understanding among all races & colors & etcs.

    2. C.R.Simmons
    3. Hello, I am trying not to get too emotional about this topic, after all, I am a product of a group of people who were enslaved in Cleveland County Arkansas. While I know there were a lot of Cleveland Co residents who did not own slaves there were certainly a lot of then who did . And just because someone was too poor to enslave another person or people, does not mean that he or she treated the colored person fairly or respected their rights to live in a county they worked and "slaved"over. Just because a person did not own slaves does not mean he would not have if he could have or that he did not don a white sheet when a black became too uppity or tried to act as a man. Just because they did not own slaves does not mean that they would not have fought so hard to keep the institution alive. We Black people know that lincoln was not pro-black but was probably just as racist as slave holders were. We know that the official reason why the civil war was fought was so the south could decide how they wanted to live. I am sorry I just really do not believe that if slavery was not an issue there would not have been this big rift between the two sides, no matter what historians and civil war buffs say. If we could ask someone living during that time what the south was REALLY fighting for I would bet that they would say to keep the status quo, to keep the free labor source and to have a place where white was right. By the way, I am trying to figure out why my ex-slave great great great grandfather was a confederate. (He received a pension too) His slave holders went to another troop so my theory that he went with them was not proven true. I am not trying to make enemies here. Just expressing myself. I appreciate this list and all the help I have been able to get from it and I hope that will continue. Cristal Simmons

    3. The War was over much bigger fundamental issues than Slavery. Most of our ancestors didn't own Slaves. They did not have the opportunity or could not afford to but an expensive slave or provide for his upkeep. So they would not have gone to war so a few rich folks could own a slave and make money. It would be like us going to war so Sam Walton or Bill Gates could own a Cadillac. Doesn't make sence does it. Richard Lunsford wrote: > Was the war really about slavery?
