Belinda. I subscribed to the Cleveland County Herald because of your items from past issues of the Herald. They called attention to the paper and let us know how much it had contributed to the past. I'll reconsider, when time comes to "pay up" for next years' Herald!
Belinda What a shame. Nearly all the list I subscribe to, feature articles from past newspapers. It is so much fun to read and it really gives you a sense of history ----- Original Message ----- From: Belinda Winston <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 8:48 AM Subject: [ARCLEVEL] changes > Hello list, > Those of you who are subscribed to the component that contacts you when > the county site changes, may be having a hard time finding the change. > Deletions are hard to spot. Hello list, Those of you who are subscribed to the component that contacts you when the county site changes, may be having a hard time finding the change. Deletions are hard to spot. I was asked, by the editor of the paper, to delete all of the news articles that I had posted from microfilm of the Cleveland County Herald. He had given me permission to post them earlier. Hopefully, sometime in the future, he will again grant permission to post past articles. Hey Jann, Just wondering about that stabbing back in 1914 which involved the Hopson boy. My Great-Grandmother was Mary P. Hopson Holderfield, there's probably a connection. Renita Eubanks McDaniel
Renita, there was a big family of Hopsons....I've run across the name many times in research, but I don't know the connections. Is anyone on the list researching the McDade family?? Ark. Gazette April 27, 1914: Fordyce, April 26 - Dangerously cut under the left shoulder and weak from loss of blood, Kenneth Johnson, who stabbed Frank Armstrong to death early Friday night, is under guard at his home near Kingsland. Carroll Hopson and Coot Childers are under bond to appear next Friday to answer accessory charges. The trio, it is said, were Armstrong's opponents in an effort to settle alleged differences, the settlement resulting in the death. It is alleged that Hopson and Johnson, brothers-in-law, went to Armstrong's home near Kingsland, accompanied by Childers and Bob Miller. Their purpose was to seek an apology from Armstrong, it is alleged, for remarks he was said to have made about Mrs. Hopson, Johnson's sister. Miller and Childers, it is said, were witnesses and were taken to confront Armstrong. The quartet approached the Armstrong home and while three of the party waited, it is said, Hopson proceeded and called Armstrong to join the conference down the road. He consented and accompanied Hopson to a point about 75 yards distant. It is said that Armstrong apologized to Hopson for the remarks he was alleged to have made and when the trouble apparently was over Johnson informed Armstrong that he could remain away from Johnson's home in the future. The two men mixed, it is said. They fought in the dark. The three lookers-on it is charged thought the men were only wrestling and fighting without weapons. Suddenly Armstrong fell. He was caught by Miller, it is said, and died with the statement, 'Boys, he's cut me all to pieces." Johnson it is said, promptly left the scene and his friends cared for Armstrong. Later Johnson was found about one-half mile away exhausted and suffering from a bad knife wound under the left shoulder. He was carried to his home. Saturday officers were notified and a guard was placed over him. Childers and Hopson were arrested, but were later released on bond. The trial originally was set for tomorrow, but was postponed because of Johnson's critical condition. Jann Woodard __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Thansk to everyone who answered the question about Gray's Lake. Now, do any of you know where Varnell's Point is located? Or a place called Brady's or Brody's Bluff?? Ever heard of Captain Charles Pennock?? Jann __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - buy the things you want at great prices http://auctions.yahoo.com/
Jann, To my best recollection Grays Lake is about 2 miles past Crossroads Church and Cemetery ( Out of Kingsland ) and should be a sign on the right to Grays Lake, which is another 2-3 miles.
