    3. Since Belinda had to remove some of the information from the web page, I thought I would post what I found in the Gazette regarding the tornado: May 11, 1927, Fordyce, May 10 - A toll of nine dead and 21 injured was claimed by the tornado which struck three communities in Cleveland County about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. At Randall six were killed while three more lost their lives at Toledo. Six were injured at Toledo and 15 at Randall. Most of the sufferers were Negroes. Reports received here say four Negroes were killed in other parts of the county. Kingsland, Toledo, and Randall all were hard hit by the tornado. Several Negro houses and a Negro church were demolished at Kingsland. Many houses were blown down at Toledo. The home of Bob Lindsey was demolished, and Mrs. Joe Lindsey, who was in the house when the storm struck, had a narrow escape. She was not injured. The home of Duncan May and the school house were blown down. The Barnett house was twisted by the tornado so badly that those in the house were unable to open a door to flee to another room. A bureau was blown on top of a cradle in which lay an infant which was not injured. The storm struck Cleveland County after sever minutes warning. A stiff wind preceded the tornado. The tornado was roaring when it reached Kingsland, coming from the southwest. It struck the three towns about the same time and with devastating force. It swept through the towns and in a few minutes was gone. Many residents of Cleveland County are homeless and have lost all their personal property. Many are seeking Red Cross aid. 3. I'm sorry. A couple of the people on your lists pointed out to me that I had posted my Wood orphan query on the Cleveland county list instead of the Cleburne county list. \ I'm so sorry- it was a mistake. I do have people in Cleveland county; but not until 1900. -----Original Message----- From: LeQuia Family [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 12:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ARCLEVEL] Orphans in Cleburne or Van Buren county Arkansas Hello- I am looking for info on five children orphaned in Arkansas in 1882 or soon thereafter when both parents died of the flu. LeRoy Wood/Woods and Ellen DeForrest Wood had three children when they arrived in or near the Heber Springs area of Arkansas with a traveling sawmill company that LeRoy either owned or worked for. Herbert LeRoy or Bert was the oldest who had been born in abt. 1867 in Wisconsin. Two girls; Edna (possibly Edna May), and Illa or Hilah - unknown birthdates and locations (could be any state). Ellen gave birth to a set of twins; a boy named DeForrest but called Dee, and a girl named DeEtta but later called Etta. Ellen died when the twins were infants (possibly in childbirth- but suffering from the flu) and LeRoy died soon thereafter. The five children were left orphaned. They were divided up and raised by different families apparently knowing of one another as they grew up and probably attending school together. What happened to Edna and Illa (orHilah)? They are said to have been raised near Cleburne county where they knew their siblings growing up near them. They must have married somewhere near there- White county, Cleburne, or Van Buren counties. I cannot find a marriage record for either girl. Illa supposedly married and lived in her later life in Colorado. DeEtta married David Richard Harmon in 1898 in Cleburne county. She was probably raised by a family named Cotthern or Coffey? They apparently had a large horse ranch in or near Shiloh. Dee married a girl named Belle- unknown maiden name. In 1900 census he was living with a Birdsong family and listed as an orphan. He lived the last 12 years of his life in Arizona, near Prescott, as a farmer. His wife survived him and it isn't known where she went after his death. He may have had a daughter named Selma or a son named Dempsey. Bert was my ancestor. He worked for a dairy in the Heber Springs or Shiloh area for several years before moving into Missouri to work the lumber mills and he married there. He lost track of his siblings over the years and had a great desire to find them all; but wasn't successful at finding them. Does anyone have any clues that might help in the search for answers about this family? I'm particularly interested in the families that raised these children; a Birdsong family, a Cotthern/Coffey family, and two unknown families that cared for Illa and Edna. Since Bert worked for a Dairy- I'd like info on the family that ran that Dairy Also interested in anyone who has an Edna or Ila that could be mine. Have lots of info on Wood ancestry to share- a several photos. Sheri LeQuia 1227 Panorama Pt.
