1896: Cleveland Co. - June 7 - Mr. J. M. McDade is all smiles; a new Democrat arrived at his house on the 21st inst. Born to Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Graves of Toledo, May 24, a boy. Cleveland Co., June 23 - Born to Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Bowlin, June 3, 1896, a twelve-pound Democrat. Kingsland, July 14 - Robert Earnest, a bright and promising youth, while at work in the woods near this place, was instantly killed this morning by a falling limb. About the same hour a man living near Fordyce was killed instantly in the same manner. Kingsland, July 14 - Two negroes got into an altercation at Draughon's mill near this place today, during which pistol shots were rapidly exchanged, but no one was hurt. Rison, Aug. 8 - Guy, the little 3 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Jones fell into a wash pit Saturday morning and was drowned before it was discovered that he had fallen into the water which was only four inches deep. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction. Kingsland, Ark., August 17 - Henry Ward, a man highly esteemed for many good qualities, met a most unexpected and tragic death near this place on Friday. He was engaged in hauling logs for the Wright Bros. mill and while attempting to make a turn on a hillside was thrown from his loaded wagon and a large log falling across his body crushed him to death. He has many warm friends who mourn his untimely demise. Fordyce, Aug. 22 - Mr. and Mrs. McPhail of Linwood, who have been visiting relatives in Cleveland county several weeks, came over to spend a day with our folks Monday. Mr. McPhail is a thoroughbred Scotchman, Presbyterian and a swamp Democrat, otherwise he is a very pleasant gentleman. Cleveland County, Nov. 12 - Mrs. Emily Smith died at the home of Mrs. Pinkard, in Cleveland county, October 13. She was born in Clark county, Georgia, May 17, 1808. She became the wife of Colonel J. M. Smith in the year 1844 or 1845, and lived for many years at Arkansas Post, Ark. She was well and favorably known throughout the state. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church, and so far as the writer is informed, lived a life in keeping with her profession. She said to the writer more than once that she was submissive and was anxious for the time of her departure to come. She said, "I am resigned and I do not see why I am spared, I am old and useless and long to be at rest." While she desired to go, she was willing to stay if the Master so willed. Old age did not injure her mind. She was bright and sparkling to the last. The writer found in her the ripeness and richness that make old age beautiful. Y'all might want to look at the Bradley Co. webpage. Melissa uploaded some of the WWI Draft Registrations I extracted at the History Com. There are quite a few from Cleveland Co. that registered in Bradley Co. Jann __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! My name is Michele Woods. I am 32 years old and I am looking for my missing biological father. His name is Thomas Stanley Mason. He was on a ship in the Navy near the coast of Whittier, California in 1968. The only other information my mother, Beverly Mausser, told me is that he was a writer who published under a pen name (no wonder I got a Bachelor's Degree in English!). Do you know what bothers me the most about not knowing who your own father really is? I have only one side of my inheritable history from my mother; for instance, I know that diabetes exists on my mother's side, but what kind of diseases or cancers should I be looking out for that I may have inherited from my father's side? By the way, if anyone should ever meet up with Thomas Stanley Mason, tell him he had twin daughters! (My twin sister is too angry and resentful to go looking for a father that intentionally deserted us.)
Dear Jayne, I received an email today from a Carlton Measels in Desha that has the whole Lindsey family laid out back to the 1600's! I am going to forward it to you to see if it ties in with your Lindseys -- I haven't had a chance to read it all yet, as it is 28 pp. long! Hey Jann! That's great! Maybe Judy can use that on the website. I am reporting on her progress. She is just about ready to upload her new version of the site. I have been helping her learn what to do, and how to do it, and she's a real trouper. It's not as hard as one might think, there are just lots of little things that have to be just right for it all to work properly. It takes a lot of time. Judy will be a great CC and I hope you all give her your support!
