    3. Am I the only one on this list?? Am I just typing messages to myself?? <grin> I have an obit for John Varnell...there is a 'smudge' on one part of it, but since he was one of the earlier settlers to Cleveland Co., I thought it would be interesting and helpful to someone. John Varnell was born in Alabama, Aug. 12, 1808; moved to Arkansas in 1843, and was married to Ann Williams in 1845. He joined the Methodist Church in 1840, and continued a consistent member until his death. "Uncle Jack," as everybody called him, was among the old men in our county. There are very few, if any, living here now that were here when he came. He helped to make the roads, build the school and church houses, and would go 10 miles to a house raising. As a citizen he was one of the best, and as a neighbor he was as true as any could be. He never meddled with what was not his business and was sure to attend to his own. He was a kind father and his children loved him very much. Although very old when he died, he did not grow fretful, but was in every sense a man when he died. He lived to see many grandchildren. He had ___ (10 ?)of his own, six of whom preceded him to the good world. For 50 years he was in every sense a Christian, and until his death, Sept. 4, 1890, his seat was very seldom vacant, if he was able to be there. Being one of the early settlers he was always looked on as one of the leaders. He never said much but when he did speak he was heard and his advice was good and opinions ripe. Not only was he a Christian, but he was a Methodist from_____to doxology, and he was ready to support every interest and each movement. He rests now from his labors and is reaping much reward. All of his children are in the Church and one son, a minister in the Baptist Chruch. He is dead, but his influence will be felt for years to come. His wife and children know (smudge______________}. Funeral at Moore's church and the Masonic fraternity laid his remains away. Peace to his sacred ashes. Rison, Ark. By: R.W. McKay Source: Arkansas Methodist Newspaper published at Little Rock. 3. Ark. Gazette April 1, 1925, Warren, Mar. 31 - Difficulty in obtaining a jury in Circuit Court here today accounted for a late start in the introduction of testimony with which the state hopes to prove that Frank Parker, Cleveland county mill hand, killed Wiley Ray, 50 year old farmer and mill hand, near here the night of Jan. 27. Ray's body was found in a ditch along the highway north of town the following morning. He had been shot through the head. The state's principal witness, who took the stand for a short time this afternoon, is a young girl who lived in the Wiley Ray home, and who is expected to prove that Parker came there the night of the 27th to see Ray on "important business." That Ray went away with him and was never seen alive thereafter. Little beyond the opening arguments and questioning of one witness was achieved in today's proceedings and with a mass of testimony to be heard tomorrow it is considered unlikely that the case will reach the jury before Thursday. Jan. 13, 1927, Rison, June 12 - W.B. Smith, aged 54, died at 6 today at his home here. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Zell, Quinn, Watt and Benjamin, El Dorado; three daughters, Mrs. Wallace Hobson, May and Elizabeth Smith, Rison; two brothers, R. Smith, Kingsland and A.B. Smith, Warren; six sisters, Mrs. John Rogers, Kingsland, Mrs. Jim Lee, Warren, Mrs. R.T. Harrelson, Arkadelphia, Mrs. Doug Wardlaw of Fordyce, Mrs. J.D. Knickerbocker, Ingalls, and Mrs. Ben Nettles, Hampton. Aug. 10, 1927, Warren, Aug 9 - J.M. Wharton, aged 76, died here on Sunday. He was born in Cleveland county, and is survived by three daughters and four sons. Jan. 26, 1928, Warren - Jan. 25 - L.S. Guice, aged 60, died at his home here yesterday. Mr. Guice has been a resident of Warren for 36 years, and for several years has been employed as mechanic by the Bradley Lumber Company. He is survived by his wife, six children, Daniel Guice of Tulsa, Basil, Lester, Everette, John Henry and Jane Guice of Warren, and a brother, H. Guice of New Edinburg. Oct. 10, 1928 - Rison - Oct. 9 - J.L.C. Thomasson, aged 75, died at his home in Warren Saturday morning. 1. Hello List
    2. C.R.Simmons
    3. Hello Fellow Cleveland Co researchers! I am Cristal Simmons living in Chicago and have been on this and other lists for a long time. Hello Jan! Great to see it up and running again. Thanks to the new list owners! Since my mother was born in Rison (Kedron, actually) in 1938 and both of her parents are from the area I am lucky in that I can cover a lot of ground in Cleveland, Bradley and Drew Counties. I have been researching my family's history since 1980 when my great grandmother died and I noticed a strong family resemblance. I was blessed to have a lot of living relatives, my paternal grandfather was one of twelve as were both of his parents and almost all of his first and second cousins left Mississippi for Chicago. He even had two uncles still kicking. On my mother's side pretty much the same situation. I was 16 and very energetic plus Roots had aired a few years back so people knew the importance of genealogy, plus I think they was just happy to have someone to share this info with. Anyway, I am African American and most of my ancestors were too. Many of the Black ones were enslaved, so I am researching slaves and masters in Cleveland County. I am so interested in this story. My ancestors raised themselves up from slavery quite well, we still have land there my grand father and his father and his father purchased. And one of my enslaved ancestors served on the Confederate side and received a pension! I could tell a lot of stories and look forward to presenting my research problems to the list. In doing internet based genealogy for more than 10 years, (I started off with a prodigy account in the late 80's), I have met several descendants from the slave holding families who provided critical information (I have also been able to help them with information they did not know) that in many instances turned me in the right direction. I hope to be able to work with you and share data. See I know that the success of slave genealogy depends on success in tracing the slave holding family and the community. In that respect I have files on several families that I suspect were my slave holders or who were neighbors or who show up in some deed or other land transaction. On the other hand records that are traditionally considered black sources such as the Freedman's bureau has a wealth of information on white families after the civil war. Since I have been studying this county for so long I recognize many of the names I see you are searching. If I have something on your family, I will share it. So for the roll call. I am researching the following families, both white and black Stocker Taliaferro (Toliver) Barker Broughton York Ederington Jackson Burney Stubblefield Frazier Crane (Crain) (wow, Frazier and Crain are on my list but I just realized the link to the television show :D) I am also looking into these families as friends, neighbors, comrades to my ancestors St. John Simms Marks Ward Abernathy There are others and I am doing this from memory so I will post again when I get it together. So anyway here are my names. I will probably post research problems next. Thanks in advance for all your help. And a question. Are any of you in Cleveland County or Jefferson Co? Thanks Cristal

    2. jann woodard
    3. Arkansas Gazette Feb. 26, 1903: Feb. 25, Fordyce - W.D. Atwood killed C.R. Kilgore at New Edinburg this morning. The killing was a sequel to the killing of Kilgore's sons on the Fourth of July, when the two boys were alleged to be drunk and the justice of the peace ordered Atwood and his bookkeeper, Matt Ruth, to arrest them. One of them stabbed Ruth and Ruth shot them both. Since that time there has been ill feeling between Atwood and Kilgore, but it was thought that the trouble was over. This morning while Atwood was putting a tombstone to the head of his child's grave, old man Kilgore came with a pistol and ran Atwood out of the graveyard twice. The third time Atwood took his gun and when Kilgore appeared again Atwood emptied his gun at him. Kilgore said, "That is not fair, you have a gun and I only have a pistol." Atwood replied, "I don't want any trouble, but if you don't drop that pistol I will shoot again." Kilgore ran and got behind a pile of brush and began to fire on Atwood, who returned the fire, killing his antagonist. Atwood is a prominent business man of the place and well known throughout this part of the state. Kilgore has several grown sons and further trouble may follow. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! 3. Arkansas Gazette February 14, 1904, Camden, Feb. 13 - A.S. Varnell, town marshal of Kingsland, and S.C. Sanders, special deputy marshal, arrived here this evening over the Cotton Belt route with J.D. Kight, a liveryman of Kingsland, who this morning shot and killed County Judge S.T. Morgan of Cleveland county, and his brother, Henry Morgan. The tragedy occurred in Kingsland. J.D. Kight and F.L. Knickerbocker are rivals in the livery business at Kingsland, and had a falling out about rates charged. Kncikerbocker attacked Kight with a knife, cutting the latter's coat. Kight ran and as he approached some cotton bales, the Morgans, standing in such a way that Kight thought they were going to stop him, he opened fire with a 38-caliver Smith & Wesson pistol, mortally wounding both of them. Owing to the high standing and popularity of the Morgans, the feeling against Kight was so strong that the officers deemed it best to bring him here and lodge him in jail for the present. Kight has heretofore borne a good reputation in Cleveland county, and has many friends there. He is perfectly calm, notwithstanding his serious predicament, and seems to feel sure of being exonerated, when all the facts in the case are brought out in the courts. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. AR Gazette April 16, 1907, Kingsland, April 15 - John L. White, a general merchant, shot and instantly killed John Webb, a farmer living near Kingsland, at noon today. Webb was standing on the sidewalks in front of E.R. Buster's store conversing with some friends, when the shooting occurred. He had been in town about an hour and came here to do some trading. According to the statements of those present, White came up the street and without saying a word, fired two shots at Webb. After firing the second shot Webb fell and White fired two more shots, all the bullets taking effect in the victim's body. When a physician arrived he pronounced the man dead, two of the bullets having struck vital spots. The cause of the tragedy, it is said, is due to the attentions recently paid by the deceased to the divorced wife of White, from whom he had been legally separated about six months ago. It is said that Webb and the former wife of White were to be married in a short time, which so incensed White as to cause him to take the life of the farmer, as there had been no other trouble or misunderstanding between the two as far as known. Webb was about 38 years of age. After the shooting White disappeared and his whereabouts are unknown to the authorities. A posse was immediately organized by the sheriff and divided and sent in different directions and it is believed that White will not be able to escap, as he is well known throughout Cleveland County. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Hi people, I wanted to share a bit of information with you that someone shared with me. If you have family pictures of ancestors or even just your Christmas vacation type, you can upload them directly to a web site called Zing.com. They have catagories for genealogy and it would be a great tool. This is not an advertisement,I thought that it would be worth sharing this knowledge so that you could save space on your home page. You could just add a link to the pictures or even tell others in your email messages.
