They spent Sunday in Pine Bluff and went to Little Rock Sunday night. There Stone, she says, left her and promised to see her later, but according to the woman he failed to materialize and she came to Pine Bluff to locate him. 3. A request for the Cleveland County Website, If any of you have one of a kind records.....say a family Bible or a letter that was handwritten by your ancestor, consider scanning it and allowing us to add it to our site. You never know who it might help. If you don't own a scanner, we could work something out, I'm sure. :) We would like to add these types of documents to the site. Marriage records, wills and such are good, but they are accessible already at courthouses and the History Commission for the most part. If you have an obituary of someone from Cleveland County that was missing in what is online, please let me know so I can add it. Also, the Cleveland County Library is asking anyone who graduated from a county school, to consider donating their school yearbook(s). Sometimes they have good information and are sometimes requested of patrons doing research. If they have personal messages written in them that you wouldn't want widely read, maybe we could copy them for you, so you could keep them, and somehow cover them up before we shelve them. Think about it... That's all for now. 3. Helen M. Dorsey was the wife of Senator Stephen W. Dorsey, for whom Dorsey county was named. Her death announcement was found in the Ark. Gazette: Denver News, January 24, 1897: Mrs. Helen M. Dorsey, the wife of ex-Senator Stephen W. Dorsey, died at her home in Denver last Wednesday morning. Yesterday she was buried. Old friends of the absent husband and young friends of the sorrowing son gathered in sympathy and tenderness to put all that was left to the earth of this once noted and notable woman into the ground--clay the clay--away forever and forever away from the freshening breath of flowers which she loved--apple blossoms and lilacs and golden daffodills; forever and forever away from the springtime song of birds--away forever from the sight of the grand old mountains on which she loved to gaze, for she was beautiful, and she loved all forms of beauty. She was called, in years gone be, the most beautiful woman in American. She was lionized by the press and in the noblest assemblages of the land, where beauty gathers to smile on fame, in the presidents drawing room, the grand saloon of the White House, during the last two years of General Grant's and the whole of the Hayes' administration, at all the great social functions in the capital of the nation, famous men crowded about her and proud dames stood upon chairs to catch a glimpse of her. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Ark. Gazette Jan. 8, 1889, Warren - A Mr. Lane of Cleveland County, who had his leg broken one day last week on a raft on the Saline River, was yesterday compelled to have it amputated. The operation was performed by Dr. Gannaway. The patient is doing well as could be expected under the circumstances. Mr. Lane must certainly be a man of nerve and coolness. When the accident occurred he was caught in the coil of the check-line and instantly dragged under the water. While under the surface and the rope crushing the bones of his leg, he had the presence of mind to take his knife from his pocket and cut the rope and free himself from its coils. Ark. Gazette, Jan. 17, 1889, Warren - Mr. Lane, the amputation of whose limb was reported last week, died last night. At the time his limb was broken he received severe injuries internally from which he suffered greatly. His remains were taken to Toledo for interment. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

    3. Ark. Gazette, June 1, 1882: Dorsey Dots and Dashes: Toledo, Ark. May 29, 1882 - Dorsey county greenbackers met in convention at the courhouse on the 27th last. A very able speech was delivered by Col. John M. Bradley. The Colonel, as usual, spoke on almost everything. A great deal of interest and excitement was manifested, especially when it came to counting in the "lucky ones." Several were killed, though not totally destroyed. Nine men who came to the convention, loving their country with a patriotic zeal, left--ah, sad hearts, but not before first getting left. The democratic primary election primary came off on the 10th of June when the heart-breaking process will again be in order. If a man has no merit to commend him to the consideration of his fellow-citizens, then let him keep his mouth shut; but if he has merit his friends will learn it without him writing himself upon the third heaven. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Ark. Gazette Oct. 19, 1855, Bradley County, Ark. - The meeting of the "American Party," at Mount Elba in this county, came off yesterday, and if you have no objection, I desire, to let you know something about it. The day was a pretty one, and over five hundred persons, (a goodly number of them ladies) were there to hear the principles of the American Party discussed. Judge McGehee of this county, took the stand and led off in a speech of considerable length and ability. The Judge is a warm friend to the cause and, upon this occasion defended the Platform of Principles, with a zeal and earnestness, that warmed every one who heard him. I saw one or two, who had a partiality for Roman Catholics, twist and screw when the Judge told of the catholics deserting the "Flag of our county" in the Mexican war, when the cross was shown to them. McGehee is an over match for any Anti hereabouts. The next speaker, W.P. Grace, Esq. made his appearance, and it was very apparent that every one present was glad to see this advocate of freedom and Americanism. I have not the time to follow him through his speech; suffice it to be said, that not only did he nobly sustain his justly earned popular reputation as a speaker, but placed the Platform of Principles of the American party in such a clear light, that every one could see their truthfulness, and feel their bearing upon the political destiny of this county. This speech of Grace's had the effect to convict those that were wavering in mind, and determine them hence forward to go with the American party. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Barnett: Died of pneumonia, May 14, 1889, S.E. Barnett the wife of F. Barnett, at their home in Cleveland Co., Ark. She was very violently attached from the exordium, and the malignancy of the disease continued to the final termination, notwithstanding every available effort was used by her many relatives and friends and her physician to arrest the rapid and destructive strides of her disease. Mrs. Barnett was born January 5, 1847, in Jackson Parish, La. She was baptized in infancy. She became a member of the M.E. Church, South, early in life and lived a consistent Christian life. She united herself to the same branch of the church after removing to Cleveland Co., Ark., in 1869, under the pastorate of Rev. E. Ware. She is gone to Jesus whom she testified repeatedly during her severe illness that she had trusted. It is a severe trial to witness the victory of death over our race one by one, yet to behold as I did and many others in the very act of dissolution of Mrs. Barnett, how cool, calm and self-possessed she was, then confronting grim Death--such a scene, at least to me, is as indeed a buoyant inspiration of hope and a glorious excitant to renewed faith in Jesus our Lord and Master, who gives the victory, "Blessed are they that die in the Lord." Such a scene to me is indeed a feast of which I have been an eyewitness many times. Mrs. Barnett's remains were interred in Shady Grove cemetery. Her friend, J.W.A. She is the lady who spearheads the honoring of War of 1812 veterans. I very much appreciate your messages to yourself Jann. :) I spoke with Diane White, president of the Cleveland County Historical Society and she wishes to use your articles in the next newsletter. Having said that, let me inform everyone there is one, and that they would love to have new members and input. They are currently trying to obtain a building to house a county museum. Diane, tell them about it........... I would also like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to attend the Cleveland County Pioneer Craft Festival, March 18 and 19. It is held at the Pioneer Village in Rison. They have several restored buildings from yesteryear. Along with crafts, they conduct tours of the old buildings, wagon rides for the kiddies, have country food galore, and live entertainment. Many people with county ties use that as an excuse to "come back home" so to speak, and meet with friends and family. If you would like more information and directions, give me a yell. I'd love to meet some of you there!
