Brother Thomas J. Clements was born in Monroe county, Georgia, on the 29th day of June, 1839. On the 29th day of June, 1865, he was married to Miss Anna Stevens, also of Georgia, came to New Edinburg, in 1869, and resided here until his death, which occurred on May 24, 1902. He professed religion when quite a young man, and united with the M.E. Church, South. He served in the capacity of steward almost continuously from the time he joined the church until his death. He leaves a wife and two sons to mourn the loss of a good husband and and father. The community has lost an upright, staunch citizen, and the church one of its strongest pillars. Truly a father in Israel has fallen. His heart, his purse, his home were always open to the wants of the church, which he so dearly loved. He was a man of earnest and abiding convictions, and endeavored, by his daily life, to be upon the right side of every question. He served his country faithfully as a soldier, battling for the "Lost Cause" in company G second Georgia Regiment of Cavalry. With the surrender of Gen. Lee he accepted, like a true soldier, the conditions, and loyally supported the government. He always used his influence to prevent litigation among his neighbors. In the sad bereavement of his family, the church and community feel deepest sympathy, but they mourn not as those having no hope, but the blessed assurance that in that land where sorrow, pain and death are unknown, they will meet again. Through a long and painful illness Brother Clements was never heard to murmur, but with true Christian patience and fortitude awaited his 'appointed time till the change came." The Lord grant that our death may be "Come up higher; thou hast been faithful to thy trust, henceforth enjoy they reward in heaven." By: Fannie B. Thompson and David Bolls Arkansas Methodist Newspaper July 30, 1902 page 15 col 1 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Does anyone know where Darby's bridge was located? Stephen Jonson was born in Bedford Co., Tenn., October 25, 1811; moved to West Tenn., 1823; professed religion and joined the M.E. Church 1825; moved to Ark., 1851. In 1870 I was transferred to Little Rock Conference and appointed to Warren circuit; met Bro. Johnson and family in the upper end of that circuit. He was a member of the Brushy Wood's Church, living there where he remained until his death, one mile from the crossing of the Moro at Darby's bridge. Four years ago I was returned to New Edenburgh circuit; found Bro. Johnson living at the same home and his membership still at Grace Church, which was built in place of the former; his health was then precarious and he grew gradually more feeble until his death April 16, 1889. Bro. Johnson was a man of unblemished integrity of character in his business transactions. Served his county as treasurer with great fidelity for several years. He was diligent in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; was beloved by all who knew him. His daughter writes that he passed away without talking especially about death, but he always talked of righteous and died his death; his works will follow him. He has joined his beloved companion above and while his children miss him they have but to follow him as he followed Christ to meet where parting is no more. May they all have grace to comfort and cheer them while living, and may they meet father and mother in the home above. By: G.W. Matthews Ark. I don't find the cemetery mentioned in this obit in the Cleveland Co. Cemetery Book!! Do ya'll know where it was?? Was the name changed at some point?? Sister A.C. Ledbetter passed from us to the Heavenly World on December 11, 1922. She was born January 4, 1841, and professed faith in Christ and joined the M.E. Church South in 1861, at Camp Springs what was then the Warren Circuit, now the Kingsland Circuit. She has been true to her church. Her life was one of sacrifice and service to her God, her church and friends. She leaves two sons, one daughter and a host of friends to mourn her loss. Her pastor conducted her funeral in the Leaufrai Church. Her remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery. By: C.J. Segers, Pastor Arkansas Meth.
