Arkansas Gazette June 1, 1871 page 1 col 2: It will be remembered that a week or two since we published a ku-klux outrage story from the Pine Bluff Republican, and called on the good people of Bradley county to arrest the perpetrators of the deed, or clear their skirts from such foul charges by proving its untruthfulness. The Pine Bluff Press, of Thursday, contains the following, from citizens of Bradley, which completely annihilates the whole story: The statements contained in the Jefferson Republican of May 6 entitled, "Attempted Murder," published upon authority of one R.F. Foster, are without any foundation, in fact, and evidently intended for a sinister political effect. First--This Foster is not, as he is alleged to have stated, a citizen of St. John, but is proprietor of a small grocery or "doggery" some miles from that place, near the Jefferson county line. Second--If said Foster had any difficulty with any person or persons at the time stated, it had its origin in private differences, and was altogether of a private and personal character--not prompted by any party feeling or political animosity. Third--The statement of Foster that there is "a small gang of ku klux raiders, who are doing considerable mischief in that section," is without the shadow of truth and originated in his own wicked or distempered imagination. Fourth--In conclusion, we wish to state that there cannot be found a class of citizens more peaceable or law-abiding than those who reside at St. John, or in its vicinity, or any state of society more peaceful or orderly, and the same remark applies with equal truth, to the entire county of Bradley. Signed: G.W. Goolsby J.E. Whitehead J.W. Hall J. Covington J.J. Smith J.H. Reed The Pine Bluff Republican has the manliness to make the following acknowledgment of its error: We learn from Mr. G.W. Goolsby, Mrs. J.E. Whitehead, and other citizens living near St. John, that the statement recently made by one Foster that he had been attacked and fired upon by ku-klux, is without foundation, and that he did not keep any store at St. John as stated by him. We give the above a place in our columns in justice to the people of Bradley county, and are only to glad to learn that Foster's statements are incorrect. Other papers that have given publicity to Foster's yarns are requested to correct any false impressions that may have been made against Bradley County. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Several list members have expressed interest regarding the community of St. John. I decided to post to the list. There will be another article to follow this one. Arkansas Gazette May 16, 1871 page 2 col 2: The Pine Bluff Republican of Saturday, contains the following, the first of a series of such reports that paper and those who follow it propose to circulate during the next year: We learned from Mr. R.F. Foster, a merchant at St. John, Bradley county, that on Sunday night last, about one o'clock, he was attacked at his store by three armed men, who fired seven shots at him through the door, and came very near hitting him several times. They also attempted to pull off the weatherboarding in order to shoot him. At this juncture Mr. Foster returned the fire, which had the effect of driving them off. Mr. Foster reports a small gang of ku-klux raiders, who are doing considerable mischief in that section. The Republican editor then comments as follows on the above: These scoundrels were not long in finding out that Clayton was no longer governor. We hope Governor Hadley will prove equal to any emergency that may arise in this state, and stand ever ready to apply the strong arm of the law to all disturbers of the public peace. That is stand ready to precipitate a lawless band of militia on a defenseless, peaceable and law-abiding people. We know nothing of the truth of the above, but from the coloring that is given it, we feel no hesitancy in saying that we do not believe one word of what is said. We call on the good people of Bradley county to defend their section from such foul charges. If they be true, spare no pains to arrest the scoundrels who committed the outrage; if untrue, show to the world that this is but the commencement of a series of lying reports on which the radicals rely to carry the next election. Since place names are being discussed, could someone tell me where St. John was located?? From news articles I have it appears, that the Foster family might have lived there. Eagle Creek Post Office was located approximately 1 1/2 miles east of New Edinburgh in present day Cleveland County. It was also Know as the Washburn place. In 1850 it was in the Warren Township of Bradley County, near or in the home of James McDaniel. James McDaniel was at one time the postmaster of Eagle Creek and Eagle Creek continued to be a post office until the town of New Edinburgh was plated in the early 1860's. There were other recruiting locations in present day Cleveland County: Mark's Mill, Mt. Elba and Lehi. Just north of what is today known as Holmes Special, in Jefferson County was Locust Cottage. This actually was the home of the Hudson family. Rufus T. Buie

Cleveland County History Lovers! In doing research on the Confederate Muster rolls, I have found several present day Cleveland County men (then Bradley County) from Company "A" of Hardy's Regiment of Arkansas Inf. This company was made up of those men not captured at Arkansas Post, formerly in Co "A" of William A. Crawfords Battalion. Hardy's Regiment was organized at Camp White Sulphur Springs in Jefferson County. NOW these enlistments of names like Sadler, Corker, and Lunsford show that they enlisted at Eagle Creek, Arkansas. Question, Where was Eagle Creek? I assume that it was in Miller or Smith since that would be where these men lived, But I don't know. Was it a branch off of BIG Creek? It must have been a "Known" location since several men gave that as the place of enlistment. Doyle Taylor Historian Camp White Sulphur Springs Historic Preservation Assoc.

You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff --part1_99.3902687.262c69cc_boundary--
Hello List, I am searching for information on Abraham Ascol and Cecil Barzzell. They were married August 10, 1911 in Rison, Cleveland Co. Tradition has it that Cecil was living with a Maxwell Family in Rison at the time of her marriage. Abraham and Cecil ended up in El Dorado AR by 1915 and Cecil changed her name to Margaret Hamilton after their divorce in 1916. Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Marilyn Smith Ellen

If I had gone through all the things I copied while in Warren, I would have found my answer regarding Vints/Vince Bluff and a Ferry being there early on. Ferry Bond of W.J. Barksdale Know all men by these present that we, William J. Barksdale, principal and J.R. Barnett and W.N. Wheeler as his securities are held and firmly bound unto the State of Arkansas, County of Bradley, in the sum of Five hundred dollars, the payment whereof well and truly be made we bind ourselves, our Heirs, Executors, and administrators by these present. Conditioned that whereas William J. Barksdale has petitioned the County Court for License to keep a public ferry on the Saline River known as Vints Bluff Ferry. Now if the said William J. Jann-- Chowming's Ferry is located about 1 mile downstream from the mouth of Derreiseaux Creek where the high voltage power line crosses the Saline River, or approx. 2 miles upstream from the Hwy 79 crossing. It was where the Camden / Pine Bluff Road crossed the Saline during the Civil War. As for Vint's Bluff, I believe that is Vince Bluff, located half way between Mt. Elba and Hwy 15 crossing on the Saline. I don't know if it was ever used as a ferry. You can access it off the Rye Cut-off Road, a short-cut between Rye and Hwy 35 west of Pansy. Smitty ferry
How are ya'll doing?? I've been on vacation!! But did manage to get a little research squeezed in!! I found several things in the Bradley County courthouse that pertain to what is now Cleveland. Thought I would post some of them. Question--where was Chowning's Ferry located?? And does anyone know where Vint's Bluff is located, and if there was ever a ferry there?? Ferry Bond Know all men by these presents that I, J.B. W. Chowning as principal and J.B. Chowning,Jr. as his security are held and firmly bound to the State of Arkansas, County of Bradley in the full sum of five hundred dollars the payment of which will and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these present. Signed and sealed this July 12th, 1862. Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas that T. Chowning has taken out of the County Court a license to keep a ferry across the Saline river at the ferry known as the Grizzards ferry for the year of 1862. Now if the above bound T. Chowning shall perform or cause to be performed the duties as public ferryman then this bond to be void otherwise remain in full force and virtue. Signed S. Chowning J.B. Hi everyone! I am getting the new ADSL Internet service. My email address will be changing.
