    3. Jann, Those articles were great. Do you have them in your computer already or are you adding them as you go. They would be a great asset to the Cleveland County page. Not everyone who visits there knows about maillists. Of course I need to add information about it on the page as well. 1. Pearson/Workman 1912
    2. jann woodard
    3. Ark. Gazette Jan 9, 1912: Kingsland, Jan. 8 - A preliminary examination of Pearl Workman, charged with killing Ben Pearson, 19 years old, was held here today. Pearson was stabbed at a dance near New Edinburg December 26. He died four days later. Workman surrendered to the sheriff and later a warrant charging murder was sworn out against him. Workman entered a plea of not guilty. More than twenty witnesses were examined. In the room in which the dance took place, there were between 40 and 50 persons. The room was 16 by 16 feet. Workman admitted striking all of the blows except the one which killed young Pearson. He claims Tall Morgan struck that one. Only two witnesses could be found who saw the knife. Miss Lula Ward, the state's principal witness, said she was standing near the door, about 12 feet from the struggle. She testified that she saw the knife in Workman's hand and saw the thrust. It was proven that Morgan had said he would hurt some body. The defendant testified that on the morning after the trouble, Morgan offered him $175 to leave and take the responsibility. Morgan has fled and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Workman is in jail awaiting the action of the Grand Jury. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. New Edinburgh 1889
    2. jann woodard
    3. Arkansas Gazette April 11, 1889, New Edinburgh, April 8 - Robert Macon (colored) died at Kingsland yesterday from wounds received in a fight some two or three weeks ago. A short time since Charles Ward became involved in a difficulty with a negro named Logan, a roustabout at the depot at Kingsland. It seems that Ward was getting the better of the negro, when Robert Macon interfered in behalf of the negro. Mr. Smith, who is Ward's father-in-law, then took a part in the fray and stabbed Macon, from which wound it is said he died on yesterday. There is considerable excitement at Kingsland in consequence of the death of the negro. Mr. Smith is proprietor of the Smith House at Kingsland, while Charles Ward is a son of Dr. Ward, a prominent physician of this place. April 9, 1889 New Edinburg - The report that the death of the negro Macon at Kingsland on last Saturday was caused by wounds inflicted by Mr. Smith, is untrue. A post mortem examination was held and it was found that he came to his death from natural causes, that of strangulated hernia and the jury inquest rendered a verdict in accordance, then exonerating Mr. Smith from all complicity in his death. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Arkansas Gazette July 13, 1887, Toledo, July 11, 1887 -The Central Arkansas Musical convention will meet at the Baptist church in Toledo on Friday before the second Sunday in August. Several counties are embraced in this convention. Many eminent singers are expected to be present. The citizens of Toledo and vicinity extend a cordial invitation to any and all who may desire to attend. Arrangements for the comfort and convenience of visitors will be made in due time. Prof. Clinton Crisp has opened up a very interesting school at the Varnell school-house some two miles south of town. Mr. J.G. May, who is known as the boss penman of Toledo, expects to enter a commercial college at an early day. We noticed last year that several of The Gazette's correspondents referred to some of their most aged citizens, claiming them to be the oldest persons in the state, but we venture the opinion that Cleveland county has the oldest living man in Arkansas. One Jesse Marks, a colored man, who lives with one of his sons-in-law, some three miles east of here, has attained the ripe old age of 118 years. The correctness of this statement of his age is vouched for by one of the members of his old master's family, who know something of his family record. Old Jesse, as he is commonly called, talks and laughs as free as a young man, and gets about quite lively sometimes. he remembers distinctly and talks freely of many incidents of the revolutionary war. The county is doing the old fellow the honor of providing for his support. Mr. J.D. Overton, ex-deputy sheriff, has been sojourning in Hot Springs for several months, a guest at the St. Julien, and we learn will in the future, make that his home, having accepted the position as clerk of that splendid house. many kind wishes follow him from Cleveland county. Prof. George Gray and his amiable lady are fairly installed as teachers in our public school, and we are proud to say are building up and establishing an enviable reputation as highly accomplished and most worthy teachers. The weather has been intensely hot for several days, and our rambling pleasure seekers are constantly resorting to the shady banks and ripling waters of the Saline river, and there amuse themselves by enticing the finny tribe to take the bate to their own destruction. (sic) >From Dr. T.H. Ackerman our resident physician we learn that there is but little sickness in this part of the county. The prospects are against the M.D.'s and but few people regret it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! 1. 1889 article
    2. jann woodard
    3. Arkansas Gazette June 28, 1889, Rison, Ark., June 26 - The people of Cleveland County are in the midst of the hottest contest every known in the history of the county. The proposed removal of the county site from its present location (Toledo) to either, Rison, Beasley Switch, Kingsland or Edinburgh is engaging the livest interest and greatest action of the people than any question ever brought into contest between our people. It is a foregone conclusion that a removal will be carried, but the all important question is which of the four places in nomination will be the lucky one in securing the prize. The several townships on the east side of the river will through delegated representatives meet in convention at Mount Olivet Church tomorrow. The object of this convention will be to determine which of the two places, Rison or Beasley Switch, on this side of the river is the choice of the greatest number of electors. The meeting is looked forward to with much interest and great anxiety. It is generally believed that Rison will leave the Switch several hundred votes behind. Saturday will witness the settling of this much important question or at least the matter will be narrowed down to at least between the two highest places. Col. Met L. Jones came down from Pine Bluff and will go out to the Convention tomorrow. He is engaged in the interest of Rison. The Beasley Switch claims are being strongly argued by Cols. A.W. Boyd and W.S. Amis. Mr. A.M. Gresham of Kingsland was over today talking quite lively for Kingsland for the county site. Mr. Gresham is a live, influential businessman, and is worth much to his town and people. Judge J.M. McCaskill, one of our best men and ablest lawyers, is engaged in the present contest, battling nobly for the cause of Rison. 1. 1887 Article
    2. jann woodard
    3. Glad to know Cleveland Co. has a maillist!! I have several articles and will 'slowly' post to the list. Arkansas Gazette, July 12, 1887, Toledo, July 11 - Mr. W.E. McMillan and his amiable wife arrived home from Cairo, Ill., where they have been visiting friends and relatives. Capt. W.T. Henry, the sprightly editor of The Immigrant has been in town several days attending county court. Mr. Walter Holmes, son of County Clerk, N.D. Holmes, is back from the Altus college where he enjoyed the many advantages offered by that splendid institution of learning in obtaining a thorough education. Messrs. Woodson Moseley, G.M. Marks and Wm. Hopson, prominent businessmen of the western portion of the county were among this week's pleasant visitors. H.D. Sadler, known as the druggist has sold out his entire stock of drugs, medicines, etc., to Mr. George M. Gallion. Mr. Sadler has built up a splendid reputation as a public dealer and will carry the best wishes of the people of the country with him wherever he goes. Sheriff L.A. Waldrope and Judge G.A.J. May returned a few days ago from the capital, the sheriff bringing back with him some children that had been placed in the asylum, but had been found not to be lunatics, but borned idiots. Judge May was on a purchasing trip for the splendid mercantile establishment of J.J. May. Arkansas Gazette Oct. 19, 1887, Rison, Oct. 18 - The weather is exceedingly dry and but little prospect for rain. Cotton is coming quite lively, and readily meets Pine Bluff prices. Willie Reddin, one of the best and most studious typos our county ever knew, still keeps the lead in the mechanical department of our own and highly esteemed newspaper, "The Immigrant." We are sorry to note the fact that the people of our county are very forgetful of the coming State Exposition. We hope, however, that Cleveland county will be properly represented. A negro living near New Edinburgh accidently shot himself through the thigh yesterday with one of those devilish little pop-guns that the brave boys generally carry for protection. Jesse Harrison, Esq., the live and progressive hotel man of this place, has just purchased a fine hack for the convenience of the traveling public who wish to stop off here and visit other places off the railroad. 3. Jayne, I also am a descendent of Bells and Wilsons. Small world eh? My Bell ancestor was William Henderson Bell who married Sarah Ella May. I believe his mother to be Rutha, but can't prove it. Family lore has it that she was married to John Bell and that they were both from NC. Do you know how many John Bells there are? Gee. My Wilson's descend from John Marlin Wilson and his son John Swan. Any of this ring "bell"? I work at the Cleveland County Library and have resources at my fingertips so to speak. If any of you need any look-ups, I'll be glad to oblige. Just be specific and patient. :) We have marriage records, census records, cemetery records, and several books on specific family surnames. You can check out the list of names on the county website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arclevel/index.html If you have any suggestions or comments, Eric and I would love to hear them. I am currently working on indexing the 1900 census, and will shortly undertake the job of entering the index of mortuary records Rufus T. Buie so graciously allowed us to copy. February 4, 2000 For Immediate Release Contact: Tracey Converse roots@myfamily.org 501-835-7502 ARKANSAS' LARGEST FAMILY HISTORY ORGANIZATION OFFERS GENEALOGY CLASSES Little Rock-The Arkansas Family History Association recently announced a lecture series featuring national and regional speakers on how to trace your family tree. According to April 1999 issue of Time Magazine, family history research is one of the leading subject on the Internet. With the advent of the Internet, AFHA founder Desmond Walls Allen says, "Reconnecting distant family relations is now easier than before. Many folks find when they get on mailing lists that they have a distant cousin also researching the family." "Our website alone had 20,000 hits last month. Our staff of nationwide volunteers have done over 200 genealogy lookups in the last month." Designed to offer free membership and online lookups to people with Internet access, AFHA has grown to the largest genealogical organization in the state with over 1000 members worldwide. During just the first three weeks of this year, the AFHA Internet Mailing list saw over 700 messages posted about Arkansas history. "The phenomenal growth shows an incredible interest of the people of Arkansas to learn about their families past," said Allen. Education is a major goal of this organization. With monthly meetings held at the Central Arkansas Library's Main Branch, AFHA hopes to educate more people in the fine art of research. Tickets to the classes are $12 in advance and $10 for members. The class runs from 2-5 pm at the Main Library in Little Rock at 100 Rock Street. Monies raised will be used to support the Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library. The February 20 meeting will feature regional lecturer Tracey Converse. Her topic will be "Surfing the Web for Cousins." She will provide insight into how to find your family information on the web. What search engines to use and how to share your information with others. Converse is also the web master for the Central Arkansas Library System and has been on the web for 5 years and researching her family history since 1983. Additional classes are slated for March 17, April 15, May 14, June 11 and July 30. Topics will include Newspaper Research, Beginning Genealogy, Civil War Records, and Native American Research.
