However, remember that your family member(s) could be buried in the cemetery that you have found evidence for or from family stories but there is no gravestone to mark their burial. Some of the outlying cemeteries in Clay Co AR and Dunklin Co MO have large areas of open space but if you look carefully you can see where the ground has sunk to show evidence of a burial. Some families just didn't have the money at the time and later on when the children grew up and possibly had money they did not think of marking the graves of their parents or grandparents. Also, there could be a gravestone but it has sunk and is underground. Only by prodding can it be found and brought up to the surface for re-setting.
