ALBERT ELDRIDGE LANCE Albert Eldridge LANCE, Delaplaine, died Monday, September 4, 2006. He was 95. Survivors are his wife, Maxine HERAL LANCE; three sons, Eugene LANCE, Lanny (Paulette) LANCE, O'Kean and Maurice Dean LANCE, Oklahoma; daughter, Darlene (Ronnie) SHOE, O'Kean; grandchildren, Kera and Jonathan CRAFTAN, Paragould, Rob LANCE, Pocahontas, Amber LANCE and Benji SHOE, O'Kean, and Steven and Mary LANCE, San Jose, CA; and great-grandchildren, Bailey SHOE and Sable CRAFTAN, Paragould and Kelvin and Julie LANCAE, San Jose. Services were conducted Thursday, September 7 in the chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Melvin SHELTON officiating. burial in Lawrence Memorial Park. J.W. GRUBBS J.W. "Sonny" GRUBBS, Shreveport, LA was born in Boydsville, June 7, 1938 to Woodrow and Essie GRUBBS and died at his residence Saturday, September 9, 2006. He was 68. A resident of Shreveport, LA since 1955, he joined the U.S. Army and servied with the 55th Artillery Battalion. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic church. In 1958 he married Shirley Ann HILL GRUBBS and she survives. Manager of Economy Oil, he worked for Swift Packing Co. and had attended Shreveport Trade School for three years learning the air conditioning trade. GRUBBS retired after 22 and one-half years of service with Shreveport Police Department as a Lieutenant but was better known as "Sgtl Safety" as he worked in crime prevention giving safety programs throughtout the city in Caddo Parrish Schools, television shows for children and classes in Juvenile Court on defensive driving. He worked in security at several facilities. For 30 years he played music, managing the Cedar Grove Boys and later the Starlight Band playing in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. He was a Past Master of Masonic Temple Lodge #444 and a member of Scottish Rite, Shriners and others. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley H. GRUBBS; his mother, Essie GRUBBS; one daughter, Rita Coleen (Charles) NELSON, Shreveport, LA; one son, Gregory Steven (Sharon) YATES, Haughton, LA; three grandchildren, Cassie Amber (Chris) PARKER, Benton, LA, Stephanie Danielle GRUBBS and Samantha Kay GRUBBS, both of Haughton, LA; two sisters, Millie TUCKER and Martha TILLMAN; four brothers, Harold GRUBBS, C.W. EARLENE ROBERTS Earlene ROBERTS, Knobel, formerly of Cash Lake Community, was born September 5, 1924 in Knobel to Edward L. and Laura MAYBERRY THOMPSON. She died in Greene Acres Nursing Home, Paragould, Friday, September 8, 2006. She was 82. Former employee of Basler Electric, she married James Leroy ROBERTS on October 21, 1942 in Knobel. He preceded her in death November 29, 1991. She was of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors include two daughters, Pearlie DAUGHHETEE, Peach Orchard, Barbara KEPNER, Corning; two brothers, Ed THOMPSON and Bobby THOMPSON, both of Corning; one sister, Freda LOCKE, Corning; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Ann LANE and Linda COFFELL; her parents, Edward and Laura THOMPSON and four brothers, Eugene, Elzie, James Ray and John Top THOMPSON. CARTER, Corning, was born May 23, 1924 in Pocahontas to Jim and Jane HIGGANBOTTOM CARTER. He died Tuesday, September 12, 2006 in Corning. He was 82. A member of Grassylead Church of Christ, he was a veteran and retired from Basler Electric Co. June 12, 1948 he married Glenda Pearl CAVENAR CARTER and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Dennis (Sandra) CARTER, Macon, GA; one daughter, Janice (Jim) PRATER, Corning; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Jane CARTER and borthers, Burl and Willard CARTER. ROGER LITTLE Roger LITTLE, Arnold, MO, was born in Corning, November 23, 1957 to Lonnie Verlin and Joyce Marie MONTGOMERY LITTLE. He died in Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Crystal City, MO, October 14, 2006. He was 48. A member of Church of Christ, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. February 26, 1995 he married Karen Elaine DILLON LITTLE and she survives. TOMMY FELTZ Tommy FELTZ, Paragould, was born December 6, 1968 in Rockford to Thomas Wayne and Linda Marie BONDS FELTZ. He died October 14, 2006 in Arkansas Methodist Center, Paragould. He was 37. ORLA SMITH Orla SMITH was born in Peach Orchard March 18, 1916, son of Joseph Richard and Ora Mae CATT SMITH. He died October 11, 2006 in Corning at the age of 90. A farmer and member of Knobel Methodist Church, he married the former nina BARCUS DAVIDSON May 20, 1934. she died January 18, 2004. VERNETTA HOLIFIELD Vernetta HOLIFIELD, Corning, was born in McDougal, February 19, 1945 to Cletus Doyle and Nettie Lavern MILLER TINSLEY. She died in her residence October 10, 2006. She was 61. A member of Corning First United Methodist Church, she enjoyed reading, fishing, and camping. Services were conducted Friday, October 13, 2006 in the chapel of Ermert Funeral Home with Rev. Larry HUGHES officiating. Burial in Mitchell Cemetery, Greenway, under the direction of Ermert Funeral Home. VIRGINIA PHIPPS Virginia Katherine PHIPPS, Hot Springs, was born September 7, 1923 in St. Louis, MO to William and Ethel BALDRIDGE. She died Saturday, October 14, 2006. A member of Lakeshore Heights Baptist Church, she served as a volunteer for 17 years at National Park Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, S. L. PHIPPS. Survivors include 4 daughters, Linda (Jim) BREWER, Success, Susan (Bill) MAXWELL and Ginger MUSSO, Hot Springs; Pattie (Ernie) AVERILL, Sapulpa, OK; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. MARY JANE RAY Mary Jane RAY, Corning, was born November 5, 1948 in Corning to James Leroy and Sarah QUALLS YANDELL. She died in her residence Friday, October 13, 2006. She was 57. November 5, 1986 she married Jack Lynn RAY, who survives. A memorial service was conducted Tuesday by Rev. Mike CHADWICK in Neelyville Cemetery, Neelyville, MO under the direction of Ermert Funeral HOME. Survivors include her husband, Jack RAY, Corning; one daughter, Jacklynn RAY, Corning; two sisters, Vada JAMES, Oxly, MO and Marlean KNORTON, Maynard; five brothers, J.W. WILMA FAYE SMITH Wilma Faye PENCE SMITH, Salem, OR, a former resident of Corning, died September 20, 2006. She was 84. Born in Corning, September 4, 1922 to George Clinton and Cora Melinda DUTY PENCE. While living in Corning she married Gerald R. SMITH who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann SMITH HERREN; two sisters, Ruth BURNETT PENCE CROWE and Katherine PENCE WATSON; two half sisters, Lola McCULLOM BRINKER and Lula McCULLOM UHLES. She is survived by two sons, Jerry L. SMITH, South San Francisco, CA and Freddie J. SMITH, Beckley, WV; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
