    3. The Piggott Times, 5/27/1998 Floyd James SKELTON, 83, of Piggott, formerly of Humboldt, TN., died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at the Piggott Nursing Center after a long illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1915, in Waynesboro, TN., the son of the late Martin and Lessie SKELTON. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church and was retired from the Brown Shoe Company. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Effie GOODWIN SKELTON; one son, William; four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by one daughter, Norma Dean VINCENT and husband, Sonnie, of Wentzville, MO; one son, Floyd, Jr and wife Gail, of McDougal; three grandchildren, Lisa, Debra and Brian; three greatgrandchildren, Stefanie, Jessica, and James; one brother; six sisters; and his exceptional caregiver Estelle VINCENT. Funeral services were held at 10:30 am Friday, May 22, at the Shelton Funeral Home in Trenton, TN. Burial was in the Grier's Chapel Cemetery.

    3. The Piggott Times, 5/27/1998 Lemial Devoe "Red" NICHOLS, 82, died May 17, 1998, in St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born July 29, 1915, the son of the late Jesse Edgar NICHOLS and Mettie YOUNG NICHOLS, who were farms in the Piggott area. He was formerly of the Piggott area and graduated from Piggott High School. He served in the Navy during World War II with combat duty in the Pacific Ocean area. He graduated from Lawrence Technical Institute in Detroit, Mich. He was retired from General Motors in Detroit. He and his wife were living in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mary BROTHERS NICHOLS of St. Petersburg, Fla.,; Mary's daughter, Marge BROTHERS YACUONE, of South Gate, Mich.; two brothers, Jesse E. NICHOLS, Jr., of Piggott, and Gerald H. NICHOLS of Hot Springs; and two sisters, Bernice NICHOLS JOHNSON of Piggott and Mathel NICHOLS JOHNSON of Searcy. Funeral and memorial services plans are incomplete. His burial will be in the Wayne, Mich., area.

The Piggott Times, May 27,1998 Dolly Fleener Rogers, 85 of Doniphan, formerly of Kennett, died at 4:20 am, Friday, May 8, 1998 at the Ripley County Memorial Hospital in Doniphan, where she had been a patient three months. She had been a resident of the Current River Nursing Center at Doniphan since 1994. Born in Elsberry, MO., May 24, 1912, she was the only shild of Walter OTTO and Mary FLEENER. The family moved to Kennett in her early life. In 1940 at Kennett, she married Orville Glen ROGERS of Piggott, who preceded her in death in 1993. She waws a member of the Slicer Street Church of Christ in Kennett for many years and attended the Doniphan Church of Christ as long as her health allowed. At the Kennett congregation she was an active member of teh Dorcas Class and ladies' groups. Survivors include two daughters and families, Margaret and Wilford BONNELL of Doniphan and Mary and Jim PRICE of Van Buren; two granddaughters and families, Kim and Daryl HERMAN of Springfield, MO., and Kendra and Robert PROPST of Cleveland, Ohio; and one greatgrandson, Chase HERMAN of Springfield, MO. Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 10, in the funeral home chapel by Steve SANDERS. Interment was at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Gardens in Kennett.

Fifty-seven people, three of which were teachers, were present at the annual Langley School Reunion held Sunday, Sept. 3, at the St. francis lunchroom Mr. and Mrs. Tom SMITH and Mrs. Earl STINEBROOK had the most family members present. He weighed five pounds, two ounces, and measured 19 inches at birth. Proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Melvin HENSON of Greenway and Mary BRAWLEY and Richard BRAWLEY of Paragould. She weighed six pounds, six ounces. Proud grandparents are James and Alma ENGLISH of Barnhart, MO and Paul and Zella MILLER of Arnold, MO. Her great-grandmother is Mrs. Dovie SCHEFFLER of Piggott.

    3. Published in the Piggott Times, July15, 1976 Stamatis Alexander KRATSAS of 1246 Evelyn St., Ypsilanti, Mich., passed away June 26, 1976 as a result of a heart attack in Athens, Greece. He was en route home to the United States from an extended business trip to his native island, Icaria, Greece, in the Agean Sea. He was born an American citizen in Glaredes, Icaria, march 25, 1909 and spent his early years in Greece. since 1934 he had resided in the U.S., the last 29 years in Ypsilanti. He was married to the former Lola HOLIFIELD of Piggott, Ark., July 23, 1947. Mr. KRATSAS was employed as a restaurant cook in the Ypsi-Ann Arbor Detriot area until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the Washtenaw Sportsman's Club for nearly 30 years; a DAV from Wold War II; a member of the Green Orthodox Church and also attended the Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lola of Ypsilanti, Mich. and a niece Stami Toula KRATSAS of Lincoln Park, Mich. Also surviving are one aunt, three uncles, several cousins and other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held on July 3 at the Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church with Pastor William R. CRYDERMAN officiating, assisted by Rev. David G. CRANE, a former pastor. Interment was June 28 in Athens with a traditional Greek Orthodox burial service.

    3. The Piggott Times, Sept. 6, 1989 Roy BLACKWELL was born May 23, 1916 in Rector, and died Sept. 2, 1989 at the age of 73 years. He was a lifelong resident of Piggott area and worked in farming for most of his life. He was untied in marriage to Dollie Irene MATCHETT in 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Sarah Alice KEESLEY BLACKWELL, his wife Dollie, one daughter, Violet, three brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter in 1980. Survivors include one daughter Lessie Marie BLACKWELL CULVER of Pollard; one foster son, Jerry VAN WINTERS of Piggott; two sisters, Audie CRAFT of Quilin and Bessie POLLARD of Pollard; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were at 2 pm Sunday, Sept. 3, in the Piggott Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Ben TURNER and Rev. Gary HANCOCK officiating. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery near Pollard with Piggott Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Jerry VAN WINTERS, Jr., Kenny VAN WINTERS, Henry FOREST, Ricky CULVER, David CULVER and Loran JOHNSON.

He is survived by his wife Lillian of Piggott; seven children, Reba Mae NIXON of Jonesboro, Johnny TUCKER and Gary TUCKER of Piggott, Alice Faye TUCKER of California, Jimmie TUCKER and Larry TUCKER of Mississippi; and Billy TUCKER of Pollard; four stepchildren, Betty CHOATE of Lakeland, Fla., Shirley Ann BROWN of Dundee, Fla., Freda KURTZ of Ohio, and Jerry BROWN of Lakewell, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, one brother Frank TUCKER of Rockford, IL., five sisters, Maggie LINZY of Ashland, Miss., Rosie CHILDRESS of Holcomb, Addie Lee THOMPSON of Holly Springs, Miss., Bertie BARNES of Hernando, Miss., and Mary SMITH of Somerville, Ala., and many other relatives and friends.     3. The Piggott Times, March 25, 1998 William B. LIGHTFOOT, 78, of Fayetteville, AR, died Saturday, March 21, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center. He was born July 4, 1919, at Gibson, MO., the son of William BERRY and Grace Grabiel LIGHTFOOT, Sr. (That's exactly how the paper has it typed. Sounds strange to me.) He was a retired electrician. He was a World War veteran, having been awarded five bronze stars, and was a POW for 26 months. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a Presbyterian. He is survived by two sisters, Lorene RAMSEY of Everett, Wash., and Junell DAVIS of Piggott; one brother, Jewell LIGHTFOOT of Belleville, IL., and one half-brother, Jack FISH of St. Louis, MO. Visitation was from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville, AR. Graveside services were held at 2p.m. Monday, March 23, 1998, at Farmington Cemetery under the direction of Moore's chapel. The family requests that anyone wishing to leave a lasting memorial send it to the charity of their choice.

He was born May 24, 1914, the son of the late Charlie PERRY and Isabelle (ROSS) GRAY. He was preceded in death by one step-daughter; one step-brother; two half-sisters; and one uncle, the late Ezra GRAY, the fater of Ilene WINBERRY of Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Lorell GRAY of Bridgeton, MO.; two step-daughters; several step-grandchildren of the St. Louis area; one brother Merl GRAY; two half sisters, Euphemia MCAUTHOR and family of Michigan and Salem LEE and family of Marianna, AR; one nephew Gary GRAY of Othathae, Kansas; one niece, Fay FEWINS of Piggott; two great-neices, Tammy (Gray) CARPENTER of Othathae, Kansas, and Lucynda WARRAN of Piggot; and a host of neices, nephews and cousins of Bald Knob, Paragould, Jonesboro, Leachville and Campbell. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in St. Louis.

    3. >From unknown newspaper, unknown date (must be from sometime around 4/15/1911, either Piggott paper or Rector) Vernie NELSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.H. NELSON, was born April 15, 1911 in Clay County, Arkansas. Departed this life at Flagstaff, Arizona, on March 4, 1945. He was converted in 1929 and joined the Purcell General Baptist Church. He enlisted in the Navy, in the service of his country, January 25, 1942, soon after Pearl Harbor. He wore stars indicating 8 major battles, 5 silver starts and 3 gold ones. He saw action in the Aleutian Islands, and a great deal of action in the South Pacific. Before his furlough in October he had been in 13 different battles and since that time he was in the invasion of the Philippine Islands. On Christmas day he was near Luzon. On December 18, 1944, after the battle in the Philippines, he was in a convoy at sea which was in a big storm. There were 8 ships in the convoy of which only 3 came through the storm. Nelson was Second Class Watertender on the Destroyer USS Dewey. At the time of his death he was enroute to Philadelphia, PA, for advanced schooling. He left San Diego, Calif., Saturday, March 3, and died aboard train near Flagstaff, Arizona, sunday, March 4. The oly information we have is that he fell forward out of his seat, evidently with a heart attack. He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Miss Belva Lafay NELSON; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. NELSON; five brothers, Murry, Henry, Connie and T.J., all of Rector, and Chief Commissary Steward Avery NELSON of the Coast Guard, who is stationed at New Orleans, LA; four sisters, Mrs. L. A. WALKER and Mrs. Marvin FISK of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. W.N. HOLIFIELD of St. Louis, MO, and Mrs. Bob PHILLIPS of Rector Route One. Storekeeper Second Class Gordon MARTIN of the U.S. Navy, of Flagstaff, Arizona, was naval escort for the body. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, March 10, at the Irby Funeral Chapel, conducted by Chaplain C.E. THOMPSON of Malden Army Air Base and Rev. Martin BIERBAUM, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Rector. Flower girls were Joyce June YANCEY, Carolyn FUTRELL, Jo Ann MCCORD, Mary Ellen MCCLUNEY, Nell WHITAKER, and Earline EATON. Interment was in the woodland Heights Cemetery, with Chaplain Thompson and 17 solders from Malden Army Air Base conducting military ceremonies at the grave. Irby Funeral Service in charge.

    3. The Piggott Times, May 21, 1998 Barbara CARPENTER, 56 , of Piggott died Thursday, May 21, 1998 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. She was born September 9, 1941 in Piggott, the daughter of the late Alva GRANVILLE and Freeda Irene BOLTON JOHNSON. She was a member of the St. Francis Baptist Church. Mrs. Carpenter worked for Dickerson Studio as a teenager, sold Avon in West Memphis and later in Piggott, and owned and operated Carpenter's Sac-It-To-Me grocery and laundromat in West Memphis. She continued in the grocery business at Morris IGA, Warehouse Grocery, Roeder's Foodland, Rebel Market, Irby's Super Saver, and Stewart-Hinkle Value Market in Piggott. She also worked at the Clay County Courthouse in Piggott as custodian for 12 years. Mrs. Carpenter was employed at Piggott State Bank from 1993 to 1997, where she worked in the loan department. She also enjoyed acting as co-hostess for the bank's PrimeTime Plus bus trips. She is survived by one son, Scott CARPENTER and wife, Taniya, of Piggott; three daughters, Faith CONLEY and husband, Steve and Charity JOHNSON and husband Bryan, all of Piggott, and Hope BURKMAN and husband, Jason, of Pollard; seven grandchildren, Adam CARPENTER, Christopher CONLEY, Lance CONLEY, Cursty JOHNSON, Bryer JOHNSON, Brittney BELCHER, and Blake BURKMAN; two sisters Lou Ella BOOK and Patsy COOK of Piggott; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2pm Saturday, May 23, at the St. Francis Baptist Church with Gary GREGORY officiating. Burial was in Piggott Cemetery with Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Jerry COOK, Keven BOOK, Joe BOLTON, Leroy BOLTON, Stan COOK, Larry JOHNSON, and Dale BOOK. Honorary pallbearers were Scott HINKLE, Randy HINKLE, Bobby BURNS, Gaylon EDWARDS, Duane COOPER, Royce BALLARD, Lester CROSSFIELD, Clyde BOLTON, and Bruce GOLDEN.

    3. October 31, 1908 Corning Courier Girl is Found Dead. Lena Cook, a young woman 18 years of age, was found dead in her room at the home of Dr. J. J. Johnson at Biggers Tuesday. When last seen, a few minutes before death, she was apparently in good health. Strychnine, self-administered, is said to have been the cause of her death. She was an orphan and disappointment over a love affair is thought to have been the cause of her taking poison.
