    1. Re: [ARCARROL] Alfred Johnson (1830 TN--1902 Carroll Co. AR)
    2. Judy, I have excerpts from a book entitled "Ten Sons of Oliver". It's about the Crain family and was copyrighted 1972 by Solon P. Crain & Marguerite Starr Crain of Midland, TX. It has Library of Congress Catalog Card No 72-87131 and was published by Newsfoto Yearbooks, San Angelo, TX. I didn't note where I located this book, but it seems to me that it might be at the Carroll County Historical Museum on the square at Berryville. I don't want to infringe on any copyright laws, so will just give the lineage as the book states it. There are references to court records used, such as wills and deeds, and would probably be worthwhile for any interested descendants to read the book for themselves. Briefly, Alfred Johnson who married Adeline Whiteley was a s/o Seth & Martha (York) Johnson. Alfred was b. 30 May 1830 Roane Co, TN, d. 10 Dec 1902. Adeline b. 4 Apr 1838, d. 12 Dec 1912. Both buried in Bunch Cem, Carroll Co, AR. They had only one child, Margaret. Seth Johnson was s/o Edmund & Elizabeth (Durham) Johnson Johnson (see below), b. 26 Apr 1792 VA, d. 16 Oct 1856 Roane Co, TN. He m. Martha York 24 Oct 1814 in Grainger Co, TN. She was d/o Semore and Elizabeth York. Seth & Martha had 10 sons & 5 daughters. Edmund Johnson was s/o James & Catherine (Durham) Johnson. No dates given for Edmund. He married Elizabeth (Durham) Johnson, the widow of his brother, George Presley Johnson. About 1795 or 1796 Edmund & Elizabeth moved from VA to TN, settling in Grainger Co. near the Knox Co. line. George & Elizabeth had two children, George & Hannah, before his death. Edmund & Elizabeth had three children, including Seth. James Johnson was s/o James (1st) & Mary (Johnson) Johnson. No dates given for James. He m. in 1742 to Catherine Durham, d/o Thomas Durham. They moved from Isle of Wight Co, VA to Brunswick Co, VA ca 1744. Five known sons: Benjamin, Frederick, George Presley, James & Edmund. James Johnson (1st) was s/o Benjamin & Mary (Mason) Johnson. He m. Mary Johnson, d/o Robert & Ann (Eppes) Johnson, on 4 Aug 1692 Isle of Wight. Children listed in his will: Mary Corbett, Eleanor Ricks, Catherine Burns, Grace Powell and sons James, Samuel, John, Richard and Benjamin. Benjamin Johnson was s/o William & Sarah (Fulgham) Johnson. He m. Mary Mason in Isle of Wight. Benjamin was willed his father's blacksmith equipment. Benjamin and Mary had four sons: Benjamin, Jesse, Mason and James. William Johnson was s/o Edmund Johnson. There is no record of William's mother's name. His will of 1719 left land to sons John, Thomas & William and his blacksmith eqmnt to Benjamin. "Edmund Johnson arrived in Jamestown in 1639 from Annandale, Scotland. He probably went to Northampton Co. on the eastern shore, then later returned to Isle of Wight Co where the first Francis Mason sponsored him in 1642. He evidently had one or more children when he arrived from Scotland, but no record has been found as to who his wife may have been." -------------- The book did not mention the parents of Adeline Whiteley, wife of Alfred Johnson. I believe her to be Nancy Adeline Whitely, d/o Isaac Whiteley & an unknown wife. Nancy A. Whiteley, age 12 b. AR is in Isaac's 1850 household in Carroll Co, AR. Isaac's eldest daughter, Cynthia Whiteley, was b. in 1824. She m. Joseph Bohannan and they are my direct ancestors. They lived and died in Madison Co, AR, just west of Carroll County. Cynthia & Nancy Adeline would have been half sisters. Another interesting note on this Johnson family: one of Alfred Johnson's brothers was Joab Johnson who m. Mary Whiteley on 6 Jul 1852 in Carroll Co, AR. Mary Whiteley was the d/o Charles Booth & Sarah (Clark) Whiteley. Charles Booth Whiteley and Isaac Whiteley were brothers. The 1st wife of Isaac Whiteley (and mother of Cynthia) was an unknown Johnson, d/o John Johnson of White Co, TN. In John Johnson's 1828 will he left "to granddaughter, Sinthey Whiteley, d/o Isack Whiteley, a bay colt." It is unknown to me if there is any connection between the John Johnson family and the Seth Johnson family. I hope this helps!
