    2. That's a good story, but I remember you could get shot stealing from another man's smoke house. The topo map shows Nancy Braswell property totaling 160 acres (in Sections 23 W1/2 SW and 26 N1/2 NW to the south) as about 3/4 miles due west of Cisco close to Duncan Gap on CR 608. Braswell Spring is about a mile east by SE of Cisco in the north eastern part of Section 25 just south of CR 601. The topo shows Burris Cemetery exactly where findagrave says it is and about 1/4 mi south by SW of Braswell Spring in the eastern part of Section 25. You can zoom into all this at http://www.digital-topo-maps.com/. So as you can tell these two places are about 1.5 to 2 mi apart. WD Snow's father Samuel A. Snow (Patented 1901) had 80 acres in Section 26 (E1/2 SE) about 0.5 to a mile south of Cisco. The topo map does not show the Duncan Cemetery in any of those sections around Cisco. 3. Hi Phillip, The section 23 and 26 thing (and I included section 14 since James "Jim" Leach is buried in Duncan Cemetery and next door to Hiram Duncan in the 1880 after whom the cemetery is named) is exactly how I mapped it last night. Sounds like we both came to the same conclusion. It's right around there within a couple of miles. I'll wait to here from Jan and see if she has any driving directions. I really don't want to send a volunteer on a wild goose chase. I also saw that on the CCHS Web page that there's a correction at the bottom of the Duncan Cemetery by a visitor. I've emailed Fleta to see is she has any memory at all when that correction was submitted or by whom. Cheri

    3. Phillip, Found it! The Carroll County Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. XXII, Summer, 1977, No. 2. Page 2, column 2: Prior to 1900, Tom Duncan acquired the Braswell tracts. Following his death (Tom d. Oct 1900), John Duncan bought the lands from Tom's heirs, Andy and James Duncan. [NOTE: A James Duncan had a land patent in T20N R24W in section 23 in 1860). It continues: He [John Duncan] sought to purchase the Braswell lands so he went to his brother-in-law, Ike Brammer, who lived on what is now (1977?) the MItchell place, earlier know as the Charlie Snow farm, and they agreed that Ike ask the Tom Duncan heirs to price the land. [NOTE: Nancy Braswell had a land patent in T20N R24W in section 23 in 1890). It continues: In this tract was the original Sam Braswell home at Braswell Springs, which later he gave to his nephew, Nathan Heard and the place now known as the Dallas Snow farm he gave to his nephew Dallas Snow. Part of this story was from Mrs. Nathan Heard. I don't know her first name. She really had a lot of info on my family and their associates. Unfortunately, not all land records are online. I can only view the land patents from the BLM/GLO site. On page 9, column 1 is the story of the prank. It says that John Duncan and Joe Leach pulled a stunt on Dallas Snow and his first wife (Sadie Ramey) shortly after they were married (c. 1903-1904). John Duncan gave Dallas Snow some meat which Dallas put in the smokehouse. Then Joe Leach snuck in and took the meat. Dallas went to the smoke house and couldn't find the meat. Then Joe snuck back in and put it back. I can scan it and send it to your personal email if you like. Let me know if this helps your cousin place the Duncan cemetery. Cheri

    3. I just went on the USGS website, find a map, and used those coordinates which brought me up to the Green Forest map area. The coordinates show just below Broswell Springs and there is no drivable access to the area of the coordinates. I then downloaded a map of the area and Burris Cemetery is plainly marked and again this shows no ready access. I have a copy of the map if anyone wants it but it would have to be sent to a personal address as ALL query lists will not accept attachments. {{[email protected]}} WGB On Nov 4, 2009, at 7:44 AM, [email protected] wrote: > > Burris Cemetery GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 36.36530, Longitude: > -93.48080, if that helps. > This is according to www.findagrave.com. 3. Hi William, I found the USGS or GNIS web site. I made Burris Cemetery come up and the coordinates are very close to what is on Find A Grave. I tried typing in various names for the Duncan cemetery and couldn't make it come up. I finally forced the site to give me all the cemeteries in Carroll Co (it came up with 61 - the CCHS Web site has more than 61, I think). Hope Phillip can find out something from his cousin on the Duncan cemetery! Cheri

    2. Burris Cemetery GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 36.36530, Longitude: -93.48080, if that helps. This is according to www.findagrave.com. The map there does not show it on or close to a road. The closest road is a drive way extending east off of CR 607. It is between there and CR 6171. Burris Cemetery is located on the old Shipman farm in the Cisco Community according the the CCHS website. Duncan is located on the Old Duncan or Braswell farm, W. Dallas Snow farm near Cisco. 3. I have not looked, but is this cemetery on the GNIS (General Name Information System) of the USGS (US Geologic Service - [mapping agency])??? If it is, it gives Geographic Coordinates (GPS and Nautical) to all the listed Features. With those coordinates, it is possible to use any of several online mapping entities that will pinpoint exactly where that Feature (cemeteries are only a small part of the system) which would then see the mapping directions. Also, with those coordinates, anyone with a GPS (this includes smart cell phones) can get their own directions with turn by turn capability. About the only problem here is the listed Feature name which GNIS (it is a separate department within USGS and has their own web site) is also attempting to add in any/all AKA's as well and they will work with just about anyone that can supply the necessary information to add or correct Feature information. I have just recently passed them the coordinates for listing a family cemetery and it is now fully listed. William G. 3. Last year, on Aug 1, 2008, I asked for a photo request through Find A Grave for a couple of graves at the Burris Cemetery in Cisco. It's been over a year now and my request hasn't been fulfilled. I'm wondering if there is anyone on this list in that area willing to go to Cisco and take some cemetery photos for me. The Carroll Co. Web Site (at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arcchs/) lists only 8 tombstones (they are listed under Miscellaneous Small Cemeteries at the end). Thanks for your consideration. Sincerely, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA ( I can do tombstone photos in most of L.A. and Orange Co. Sometimes San Diego, Kern, and Tulare Co too. Just ask).
