Something to consider -- in the Depression years there was a great fear of social instability or violence directed against the government (Bolshevism and Communism were in their heyday) by the many hundreds of thousands of unemployed young men in the country. The work camps served two purposes, the first obviously was to give them work, but the second was to defuse any opportunity for anti-government organizing. One way to do this was to send these young men far from home where they didn't have ties to the local communities. So, sending someone from NC to FL instead of placing them in a local CCC camp would mean that he wasn't being thrown in with others from his own area. This could be the sort of environment where strong bonds could be forged among the young men. They could also be exposed to socialist ideas which blamed capitalism on their current problems. Sounds a bit familiar, doesn't it? -----Original Message----- From: William G. While exploring the newly released 1940 census for Carroll Co., AR, I couldn't find my father, Eugene Snow, who was thought to be in the CCC camp at that time. The Enumeration District for the CCC camp was 8-24, but it shows as two blank pages with Non-Pop written across it. Does anyone know the history of the CCC camp during the census taking? Phillip
Does anyone know the date of Milly Foster’s death? She was born in Jan. 1850 and can be found on the 1900 thru 1920 Carroll Co., censuses. She is gone by 1930, so I assume that she died. I’d like to get her death certificate from the Ark. Health Dept., but I need a more specific date than “between 1920 and 1930.” Some details may help. Her maiden name was Foster. She was born in Searcy Co. Her mother was Nancy (possibly Holman, Hall or Mitchell). One of her daughters in Oklahoma said that she married a man named Henry Foster from Illinois, possibly a cousin. She had 9 children: Carrie/Mary, John H., William B., Serilda (Rilda), Ellen A., Jane Elizabeth, Annie, Golda, and Austin. She had these siblings. Alfred, William, Mary Ann, Emaline Elizabeth m. Ephraim C. Wood, Joseph m. Martha Ann Baugh, Henry A. m. Mary A. Reed. Her daughter Golda married Wilson Riley Pim and moved to Washington Co., Oklahoma. There’s a note attached to Golda’s Find A Grave site that says she was Cherokee. I don’t know quite to make of this. There’s some mystery surrounding this entire Foster family (my yDNA test says that we are Watts, not Fosters at all, and I’m still trying find out how that came to be). Bob Foster in VA
Bob, I can't help you on Milly, but I can help interpret the DNA results. I run 3 DNA projects, assist at the DNA meetings at my regional genealogy society, and speak about DNA. The "Non-Paternal Event" (NPE, as they call it in the DNA world), arises when looking for an ancestor's father (in your case a Foster man) when in reality, you probably need to find a Foster woman who gave birth to your ancestor. Look for Foster women and then look for neighbors or others nearby named Watts. I bet the out of wedlock pregnancy happened a lot back in the day, but there were no reality TV shows bragging about being 17 and pregnant :) I've heard some of the young pregnant girls/women were hidden at home or sent away somewhere to have a baby. You still have Foster DNA, it's just not on your Y line. If you did the Family Finder test (if you tested with Family Tree DNA), you will start to get Foster matches there as that portion of the database builds. Hope this helps some, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA Family Tree DNA Admin (volunteer)

Wow, Shelley. Wish it was my family! Thanks for rescuing it and doing all the background work to identify the photo. I hope you get it to a current descendant. That was very kind of you. Cheri Mello Torrance, CA
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Will WYATT which was taken at the G. A. Jenkins Studio in Green Forest, Arkansas. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's and is of Will and a woman, with Will likely in his 70's or 80's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "W. W. & J. W." along with "Mrs. Hannah GUNNING - Brother". Based on limited research was able to gather the following information regarding a possible match: William Hale WYATT was b. 1 Jun 1812 in Jefferson Co., TN to parents Solomon WYATT (b. 7 Apr 1773) and Hannah REESE or REECE (b. 23 Sept 1775 in Franklin Co. VA). William was one of 7 children born to this couple including, Reuben; Mary Jane "Hatty"; Cynthia Dow; Lorenzo; William Hale; Solomon J.; and Alexander S. WYATT, all born between 1798 and 1818 in TN and Gordon Co. GA. William married Rebecca STILL (b. 12 Feb 1816 in NC or GA) on 2 Dec 1835 in Jefferson Co., TN and together they had 8 children including, Lorenzo Dow; Mary Emeline; Sarah Jane; George Alexander; Isaac Anderson; Martha Ann; Rebecca Caroline; and William P. WYATT all born between 1837 and 1852 in Jefferson Co. TN, Gordon Co. GA, and Yell, AR. On 25 Sep 1860 in Carroll Co. AR William married a second time to Martha Emeline DAVIS (b. 13 Sept 1842 in Lauderdale Co. AL) and they had 10 children including, James F.; Thomas Jefferson; William Grant; Margaret Isabelle; John H.; Joseph Wesley; Hannah Julia; Nancy Ellen; Solomon Perry; and Rose or Rosa Victoria WYATT all born between 1862 and 1886 in Ozark, MO and Carroll Co. AR. William died in Green Forest, AR on 3 May 1890. Census records provide the following information: 1860 census of Hickory Township, AR: William H. WYATT, age 48, a Farmer, born VA Lorenzo D. WYATT, age 22, a Farmer, born TN Mary E. WYATT, age 20, born TN Sarah J. WYATT, age 18, born TN George A. WYATT, age 15, a Farmer, born TN Isaac A.
