James Harrison1 Cates was born March 1850, and died Unknown in Buried Watson Cemetery, Calhoun County, AR. He married Sarah Ann Elizabeth Clemens November 19, 1874 in Calhoun CO, AR (Source: Debbra Szymanski, Calhoun County Researcher, October,1999.). Children of James Cates and Sarah Clemens are: + 2 i. Cicero C.2 Cates, born July 1884. 3 ii. Lawrence Oliver Cates, born Unknown. Notes for Lawrence Oliver Cates: According to Coley Cates info, Lawrence Cates served as a sheriff of Calhoun County about 1930. Generation No. 2 2. Cicero C.2 Cates (James Harrison1) was born July 1884. He married Bertha Brumley 1902, daughter of John Brumley and Louise Hopper. Notes for Cicero C. Cates: Cicero was murdered in early 1930's. Wife Bertha had kicked him out of the house and he was living in a tent. He was murdered when someone burned the tent while he slept, probably for revenge, as Cicero was not known to be a kind man. Cates b. 1884, married Bertha Brumley in 1902. Lived in Calhoun Co. all his life and associated with the Brumleys and Thomasons. Cicero was murdered in the early 1930's in a logging camp beside Hwy 167- possibly by bootleggers. His brother, Lawrence Oliver (Ol) Cates was sheriff of Hampton at the time. Believe he may be buried in the Campground cemetery with no headstone, but not sure. 2 children, James Lewis b. 1903 and Alma b. 1906. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Notes for James Lewis Cates: James Lewis (Louis?) Cates was the leader of a singing group that frequented South Arkansas; 'Louis Cates and his Playboys'. Notes for Blanche Womble: According to information from Jesse Parker of Camden, several of Blanche Womack Cates' children live in Union County - El Dorado today. There are a large number of Cates families shown listed in the El Dorado telephone directory. Jesse Parker recalls visiting Blanche at the cafe that she ran in El Dorado in the 1940's. In email message from Coley Cates on Aug. 16, 1999, Blanche owned the Terminal Cafe in El Dorado during the 1940's. In a story told at the 1999 Parker Family Reunion in Hampton, Blanche Womble drowned in an accident that occured near the Old Dock 8, south of Hampton in Calhoun County. She and a friend were sitting in an auto near the shore of the Ouachita River, when the bank caved in and the auto, along with its two occupants, crashed into the river. It was several days before the bodies could be recovered due to recent flooding conditions. Date of the accident has not been located to date. Children of James Cates and Blanche Womble are: 6 i.
