Last night I called for a Roll Call for this weekend end and it has been brought to my attention that I called it for February 2 -5 instead of March 2-5. Guess I need to keep a closer eye on what I am doing - and even maybe wait until I am not under the influence of Pain Medication. I am going to be home all weekend with an infected gland in my face - I look like a chipmunk and thought this would be a good time for a Roll Call. Please forgive and just know, you don't have to wait until February of next year. :) Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Hello Everyone, My name is Earl J. Laws and I am researching the Laws, Earnest, Mulligan, Moore, Sims, and Brumley families in Calhoun County. These families came from Tennesee, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. I live in Calhoun County close to Tinsman. I am also looking for info on my wife's people and they are the McManus, Reaves, Speer, Council, and Thomason families from Calhoun County and the Lash, Armstrong, Bryant, and Knowles from Cleveland County. I am also interested in the Civil War, mostly the local engagements and people with local connections. I had two g-grandfathers that fought in the war and were captured, one being wounded twice. My wife had at least three of her grandfathers, not sure on the great, that fought in the war. Also, for anyone interested, the annual Hogskin Holidays will be the weekend of April 13. The old photo display is very interesting. Does anyone have any info on the Thornton and Alexandria (T&A) Railroad. Jr.
Let's have a two (2) day Roll Call, beginning tonight, Friday, February 2, 2001 and ending Monday Morning, February 5, 2001. Post your surnames, dates if you know them and any other bits and pieces of information you might know about those you are researching. I would suggest that you add to the subject line your surname or surnames and dates if room. Remember, this is a timed Roll Call and it is over this coming Monday morning. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Some of you have probably already heard about this, but it was extremely exciting news to me. The January 29, 2001 issue of U.S. News and World Report, featured a story on using dna testing in genealogy research. overly simplified: just as DNA is used in paternity testing - now it is being used to establish kinship. three companies were specifically mentioned in the magazine article: FAMILY TREE DNA, phone: 713-828-4200, web site: www.familytreedna.com "helps connect distantly related genetic cousins" - this is the only site i've visited so far - one of the prices quoted was $299. GENE TREE, phone: 888-404-4363, web site: www.genetree.com "tests whether families with the same surnames are related" (my note: what happens if you're "cousins" from two or more lines????) OXFORD ANCESTORS, i didn't get a phone number, web site: www.oxfordancestors.com "groups people into ancient maternal/paternal lineages" I don't know a thing about any of these companies nor how reputable nor reliable they are. just wanted to pass the info along. hope you find it as exciting as i did. patricia

Dear List Members, Rootsweb is slowly coming back. The messages are beginning to trickle through. We are not able to get on Rootsweb.com or am I able to get into the List Utility pages yet. Password Central is not available either. I am sure before this day is out we will be back to normal though. Just a few items I would like to bring to your attention. 1. In the course of a day I receive many requests to help members unsubscribe. Before you ask me to help, which I am always happy to do, send on the word UNSUBSCRIBE to [email protected] (XXXXXX being the name of your list.) If that does not work, then you can go to Password Central and ask for a list of all mailing lists you are subscribed to. You will receive an e-mail posting of these lists and you can unsubscribe from it. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ 2. Please check your subject line when sending back to the entire list. Make sure it covers the subject of your posting. The very person you want to read it may just delete it if you are looking for the history of John Smith and the subject line talks about burial place of Isaac Kirkpatrick. 3. If you are responding to a message, please delete some of the past postings from the bottom on your e-mail. After there has been several responses the amount of un-needed information that tags along is causing many of our members problems with the size the e-mail becomes. Again, thank you for your support of me and of the list rules. It is because of each of you that this list is the success it is. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Dear List Members, Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. The down time will be about 24 hours. If you do not receive any postings during this time do not worry, all will be back up and running soon. Your List Mom is going to take a 24 hours nap. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Dear List Members: It looks like the flood will miss each of you, unless there is a second wave that I don't know about, but it hit me with full force from about 70 of my lists. I am not sure if and when it will be over but I have received and deleted hundreds and hundreds of bounced messages. I have also received more than I can count requests to be subscribed and unsubscribed. I will work my way through these. I have to check each one of them to make sure it as it should be. This will take time. Thank you. As usual, you were willing to do all that was necessary to help make this list run smoothly. Your many messages of support touched me and gave me strength to deal with this mess on my side. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
One more item: In all of this mess, you might have been unsubscribed from a list by the system. I suggest you go to Password Central http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ and type in your e-mail address and ask for a list of mailing list you are subscribed to. You will receive it in just a few moments. This way, you can see if you have been unsubscribed from a list you do not want to be removed from. I can see this is going to be a long night.
