    1. [ARCALHOU] MEDLEY in Calhoun County, ARK
    2. Bill King
    3. I am in possession of an Arithmetic Text Book by Joseph Ray, M.D., Law Professor at Woodward College. The binding of the book is in above average condition (for its obvious age) and bears the title: Ray's New Higher Arithmetic. The book bears a copyright of 1880 by Van Antwerp, Bragg & Company, New Higher, Arkansas. Published in Cincinnati in July 1880. Appears to be a secondary (high school) level text book. The book has the stamped name of J. H. Medley, Locust Bayou, Calhoun County, AR. It also bears the handwritten names of Willie Medley and Gertrude Medley, both of Locust Bayou, Ark. In addition, the name of Harvey Smith is written in pencil on one of the fly covers of the book. The book was mailed to me years ago by someone who picked it up at a garage sale in Arkansas. If you are a MEDLEY family researcher and wish to have the book, I will be happy to mail it to you at no cost. If not, I plan to donate the book to the Calhoun County Library, Hampton, AR. Notes: My KING and WITHERINGTON families migrated to Calhoun County about 1846 from Alabama. My father, William Riley King (Sr.) was born in Calhoun County in December 1898, and grew up on his grandmother's farm in lower Calhoun County (Mrs. Catherine C. King, 1847-1914, widow of William R. King). Both of these Kings are buried at the old abandoned Moody Farmplace Cemetery down near Artesian in Southern Calhoun County. Bill King Houston, TX 281-493-6767 BillKing78@comcast.net

Calhoun, who was adopted, along with her brother, Jordan Marion Calhoun, by James Calhoun of Barbour County, AL in 1849. By 1850, Mary E. was out of the area and does not appear on the Census by that name. I know she was married and in Texas in the early 1880's, possibly in the Waxahachie area. I went to New Hope Cemetery recently to track down my family and have a couple of questions you may be able to answer for me. I noticed a tombstone for Betty Hall (1850-1935) in the Morrison plot, two actually. She is listed as the wife of G.H. Morrison on one and Rawleigh Williams on the other. Do you know if this is the same G.H. Morrison that was married to Julia King or was it one of his sons? Also, do you know if James H. Morrison (1856-1888) was the son of G.H. Morrison? I assume that because he is buried in the family plot that he must be a son, but I don't want to run on assumptions and list him as such if he is a nephew or some other relation. Thank you for your help! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandparents are buried in New Hope and my parents and I went out to visit their graves where I took a lot of pictures of the Morrison plot. Since so many of the tombstones were damaged or dirty, I don't have good photographs of them. If anyone knows, I would like to know if George H. Morrison b. 1837 was the father of James H. Morrison b. 1856. I assume he was since they are buried so close, but would like confirmation if anyone has it. G.H. Morrison was referenced in the first post, and I am assuming he was the first Morrison in Calhoun County. If any of you have more information to share, I would love to learn more. You can contact me via email if you wish. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He graduated in 1955 and launched his decorated, 23-year military service to the country. On July 29, he married his college sweetheart, Norma Jean Brock of Houston and thus began their loving, 54-year life together. After receiving his degree, Ted attended USMC Basic School for officers in 1955-56, and then was selected for US Naval Flight School in 1956-57. In 1957, he was designated a Naval Aviator. Ted then attended US Naval Helicopter training and was designated a helicopter pilot in 1959. In 1965, he attended USMC Amphibious Warfare School and then later, US Naval Postgraduate School in 1969, where he was awarded a Master of Science in Management degree. His 23 years of Marine Corps service included three one-year tours in the Western Pacific as a helicopter pilot, including one combat tour in Vietnam, plus three years as a pilot in HMX-1, the helicopter squadron supporting the president of the United States. He finished his military career as Deputy Project Manager for the development of the Marine Corps' CH-53E heavy helicopter. In 1978, he retired from the USMC as a Lt. Colonel. Ted received two Distinguished Flying Cross awards, an Air Medal (24 awards for 492 combat missions), Presidential Service Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Presidential Unit Citation, plus numerous campaign and service awards. He belonged to the Marine Corps Aviation Association, the Marine Combat Helicopter Association, and the Military Officers Association of America. In 1998, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Robertson County Water Supply Corporation. In 2002, the members of the board elected him to serve as the water company's Vice President, a position he continued to hold until his health forced him to resign and fully retire in 2003.
