Author: angieblv Surnames: BROWN, ROSE, HETOWER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.calhoun/859/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for any information about the relatives of my Great-Great-Great Grandparents Jacob (Jake) and Edna (Rose) Brown. They lived in the townships of Magnolia and Calhoun in Columbia, Arkansas. This is what I have so far: Jacob (Jake) Brown was born about 1827 in Kentucky and Edna (Rose) Brown was born about 1844 in Georgia. The census reports for the years 1870-1910 show the following: In 1870, they lived with their children (John and James Rayford) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "White" except for Patsey Rose listed as "Black" In 1880, they lived with their children (John, Delia, Davie, Peggie, Henry, Samuel, and James Raford-stepson) and Jacob's mother-in-law (Patsey Hetower). The race of everyone was listed as "Black" In 1900, they lived with their children (Sam, Joe, and Solomon) and mother-in-law (Patsey Rose). The race of everyone was listed as "Black" On the 1910 census, I believe a transcription error was made. Jake Brown was listed as John Norman, Edna Brown as Edna Norman, Samuel Brown as Samuel Norman and Thomas Brown-nephew as Thomas Norman. I did inform Ancestry.com about this error. Sorry you got such a message. That was what is called a "flame" and is against the rules of message boards, for good reason. Sometimes people overreact, or react too quickly, before taking time to read something over again and ask themselves if what was interpreted was what was meant, or maybe should not be replied to. "Cast the first stone?". We all make mistakes; hopefully it won't happen again. Life is too short. Happy hunting. ----------------------------------------- gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: KathleenM86 > Surnames: King, Jones, Arnett, Hickman, Lassiter, and many more > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.calhoun/858.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Thank you for your kind reply! Third Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA Company “Champagnolle Guards” (includes a number of Calhoun County volunteer troops) This company of volunteers, calling themselves the “Champagnolle Guards,” was organized at Champagnolle, Union county, Arkansas, June 20, 1861, by Captain Thomas F. Nolan. It traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia, where it was assigned to the Third Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, as Company E, July 1861. On July 18, 1862, twenty-eight members of disbanded Company C, Second Arkansas Infantry Battalion—also from Union county—were assigned to this company. Bill, I very much appreciate your posting this information online. I have one that I would like to elaborate on a little. For those researchers looking for information on John Hopper. The one listed here is John Samuel Hopper and I've had a time finding him because of incorrect spellings. In fact, his memorial in Chicago has John S. Harper. The archives had him listed under Hooper for many years was why we had difficulty finding him. Additional information that I have on him: Pvt. Co. I, 3rd Reg't, Arkansas Infantry. After capture at Chickamauga he was sent to military prison in Louisville, Ky and on Oct. 2, 1863 he was transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois, where he became ill (tuberculosis) and died Dec. 20, 1863. Thanks for letting me post additional information.
