Thanks, Ed Sanders!!! Those are my Calhoun County Witherington "cousins", all three of the Witherington boys (see below) were sons of my 3rd Great Grandparents, John & Mary Ellis Witherington of Fayette Township, Calhoun County, AR. They were the brothers of my 2nd Gr-Grandmother, Martha Caroline Witherington, who married John T. King in Conecuh County, AL (between 1840-1843). Both families migrated together to Calhoun County about 1846. Notes: Alonzo Dossen Witherington born 1847 in Union/Calhoun County. William JamesWitherington born 1836 in Alabama. Since then the best records available to us have been the 1890 property tax receipts of the counties concerned. Calhoun County was formed of portions of Dallas & Ouachita counties in December 1850. The residents of the three adjoining counties frequently found themselves reflecting this history without intention to do so. One who had previously had land in Dallas County might now find that land partially in Dallas County and partially in one of the other counties. Thus, the landowners might find themselves now paying property taxes in two counties rather than one. There is a Calhoun County...there is no, at present, submissions for the County. So if you search by County for submissions, only those that have submissions will show up. If you submit a gravestone picture, when it loads and it ask you to continue, then it will ask at the top for the County, you will use the drop down and ALL the coutines will show. You will them choose Calhoun and then enter the name of the cemetery. It would be a pleasure to see some Calhoun submissions...Then wher you Browse Gravestones by counties...you can choose Calhoun from the drop down and the name of the cemetery will show and you can look at the pictures from each cemetery. Try this with Lawrence County and you will see the counties that are listed there. If you have other quesions i will be glad to help you with them. Greetings Arkansas Researchers, I wouldlike to invite you to check out the Arkansas Gravestone Photo Project and participate in its growth as it will only grow with everyone's involvement. The www.Arkansasgravestones.org i s a wonderful tool to preserve the headstones of your ancestors. With the advent of time and weather and vandalism, our headstones are disappearing at an alarming rate. We need to work on preserving a digital image of our family stones as a fitting tribute to our ancestors. This site is an easy-to-use site that exists to make this preservation possible. Additionally there is no cost to the contributor or to anyone wanting to view the photos, hard to find in this day and age where everything costs something. Plus this is a great way to have a backup for all those photos you presently have. There are no annoying ads flashing, moving or popping. Particularly valuable are those very old headstone photos that you have in grandma's photo album. Scan them into your computer and add them to the site as they may be the only testament to your ancestors life. Share them with the world. This is link for the Arkansasgravestones.org GPP Arkansasgravestones.org has just come on line. We are presently working to get it setup and we would invite you to check it out. Also, I am asking for your help, please add your photos to the site. Every county will have space. I am your Arkansas State coordinator and I am truly excited about being involved. If you need help in adding your pictures i will be glad to help....another great way to save a grave. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at tootied@suddenlink.net to respond to this message. Many of you know me for my SHARP research. Any one interested in hosting any of the counties i would like to hear from you. For you information there are 11 more states with the gravestones.org sites and more are being added. Thank you very much! I know a little about Clyde William Johnson, brother to Rosa L., I'd love to compare notes with you and find out more about the Doherty/Johnson family line. Clyde married Love Daugherty/Doherty, who was the granddaughter of my Moses Johnson (1846-1922). His daughter, Fannie Mae Johnson married William Daugherty/Doherty. This William was another son of William and Tenasas/Tennessee(?) Quarles. I also am working on the Quarles/Pierce family line. Phoebe Jane Quarles married Robert Caleb Pierce. There son, John William Pierce was the second husband to Annie Lea Johnson, another daughter of Moses Johnson. gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: Brazil1049 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.calhoun/865/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Can anyone tell me when Preacher Doherty and his wife, Rosa Lee Johnson died and what they died from. I'm in possession of the "Claim of Widow for Bounty Land" of the widow of Capt. John Carr. The application was made from Clark County, AR by Sarah Ann Stewart(d) Carr. The connection with Calhoun is that John Carr married his second wife in Calhoun. Capt. John Carr served in the 2nd Seminole War as part of the Alabama Cavalry about 1840-1842. Capt. John Carr was born about 1806 in Oglethorpe County, GA. He is described as having been 5'11", high fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He married Sarah Ann Steward in Calhoun County, AR on January 11, 1852. His first wife was Martha Shackelford. He married Martha in Montgomery County, AL about 1828. Martha died in Ouachita County, AR about 1845. John Carr himself died in Clark County, AR on Dec. 8, 1875. The interesting part of this application is that there is a note stating that it was consolidated with #92937. That is the number of the land bounty application for my 4th gr grandfather John Carr of Jackson County, AL and later of Carroll County, AR. So the widow's application came to me as part of the land bounty application of my 4th gr grandfather John Carr. To the best of my knowledge, there is no blood relation between Capt. John Carr and my 4th gr grandfather. If anyone out there is related to Capt. John Carr, I'd be glad to correspond.
