    3. I am compiling a profile on the Ricks family in Bradley County and came across a census that makes no sense to me at all. I hope some of you will also look at this same census and tell me what you think. Alfred May Ricks married Lucy Frazer 4 Jan 1870 in Bradley Co. One of their daughters was Anna Ricks who married Benjamin K. Davis. I was running the census on this family and was surprised at what I found. 1920 Bradley Co., AR Pennington Twp: Benn Davis age 37 AR Labor for Lumbermill Anna age 38 [maiden name Ricks - sister to Walter and Perry Ricks who were in law enforcement in Warren] Alphred age 16 son [this Alfred May Davis was married to Nettie Clyde ? that worked at Aubert Reynolds Grocery for years. Helen Hickman age 8 dau Cannida [can't read surname, but the only person I know it can be is Canada Calvert listed as father. I know that Helen Hickman was the granddaughter of Canada Calvert] I have NO idea what the Davis/Ricks connection was with the Hickmans and Calverts. Then to complicate things even more I found this 1920 Census for Bradley Co., Pennington Twp: Rufus Godwin age 58 Ida Godwin age 48 wife Rufus C. age 23 Ozelle age 16 Mamie age 14 Herbert age 12 Susie Grubbs mother age ? 84 ALFRED RICKS age 73 father Perline Ricks niece age 12 Again - I know of no connection with the Godwin/Ricks family. I think Mrs. Ida was a Carey! I will appreciate any help on any of these families! Jann --------------------------------- Don't pick lemons. See all the new 2007 cars at Yahoo! Autos.

    3. Jann, perhaps none of the following is helpful, but I hope that it might be. Obituary, The Eagle-Democrat, August 2, 1995, p. 6 Mrs. Helen Hickman Jordan, age 83, of Warren, died Monday, July 24 at Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock. She was born September 24, 1911 at Warren, a daughter of the late William Webster Hickman and Daisy Calvert Hickman. She was a homemaker and member of the First Baptist Church of Warren. In the 'thirties, Mrs. Jordan worked for several years as society editor of The Eagle Democraft, being much praised for her work by Editor G.C. Pinckney and Publisher DuVal L. Perkins. She married Howard Blount Jordan and he died October 31, 1973. Surviving are a sister in law, Ruby Jean Ogilvie, Chapel Hill, Tennessee; 2 nephews, John William Hall, Bardstown, Kentucky and James Wade Hall of Dallas, Texas; and cousins, Edwin and Virginia Hickman, Mablevale. Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 28 at Frazer's Chapel by Rev. Johnny Ross. Janice Sullivan was the organist. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery by Frazer's Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Flyod Myers, E.M. Reynold, Jr., Dr. Stacey Toole, Max Givens, L.D. (Buddy) Hollingsworth and Bernie Hargis. ---------------------------------- Following editorial appeared in the same edition of The Eagle-Democrat that carried her obituary: Helen Hickman Jordan was one of the most accomplished of the oldtime "society editors" of The Eagle Democrat. She had a perfect hometown touch of knowing what to include in her "locals" every week: which weddings to emphasize, which ones not to, leaving a mysterious distance between weddings, births and things of that nature. That she had a sad life was known to her intimate friends. Her husband, a businessman, was flying home from someplace: she went to the airport to meet the plane. Those in charge had to tell her that her husband had dropped dead during the flight. He was not yet sixty. She remained in Warren in her declining years: things are now, after all, better for her, now that has claimed those "exceeding great and precious promises" she richly deserved. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Following letter to the editor appeared in the Warren Eagle-Democraft, August 16, 1995, p. 8: "The family of Helen Hickman Jordan would like to thank everyone who helped us at the time her death. Thank you for the cards, flowers and memorials given for Helen. Thank you to the First Baptist Church ladies who prepared the meal after the service, to Rev. Greg Stanley for his care and concern, and to the pallbearers from the church. A special thank you to Pastor Johnny Ross who took the time to know Helen through her Bibles and her literature which made his service for her beautiful. Thank you, too, to John Frazer who is always a friend as well as the funeral director." The letter was signed by John Hall, Ruby Jean Ogilvie, Edwin and Virginia Hickman, and Helen Hickman Conner and Family. ________________ Gerry's note: The John Hall who signed the letter was likely the deceased Helen's nephew, son of her sister Katie. I suspect that the Edwin Hickman who signed the letter might have been a descendant of Helen's uncle Edwin L. Hickman, b. 1898. Finally, the Helen Hickman Conner who signed the letter was the daughter of Carroll W. (Dobie) Hickman. She was a third cousin of her namesake. I do not know the connection of Ruby Ogilvie. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "bjw" <jann_woodard@yahoo.com> To: <ARBRADLE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 1:21 PM Subject: [ARBRADLE] Davis/Hickman/Calvert/Ricks/Godwin >I am compiling a profile on the Ricks family in Bradley County and came >across a census that makes no sense to me at all. 2. Jann, I think both the mystery families can be explained by looking at the household numbers in the census. The pages at Ancestry.com seem to be out of order, and both families' listings cross over onto a 2nd page, so the misordering screws up the family groups. Alfred Ricks is actually in the household of Ben and Anna Davis. They are household 264, family 275. The Hickmans are household 283, family 295, ?? (I can't read) and Daisy Hickman. -Melissa Quoting bjw <jann_woodard@yahoo.com>: > 1920 Bradley Co., AR Pennington Twp: > Benn Davis age 37 AR Labor for Lumbermill > > Helen Hickman age 8 dau > > Cannida [can't read surname, but the only person I know it can be > is Canada Calvert listed as father.
