Hi List, I've got a general kind of question for you. When I was growing up, my church (in Louisiana) used to have what they called "syrup soppin' suppers." It was mostly biscuits and pancakes and syrup and fixins. My great-great grandfather, raised in Bradley County, was known for "soppin" biscuits. My silly question is: How far back does this tradition go? Did Bradley County residents have "syrup soppin' suppers? Anne, I grew up in Marsden, a Bradley County farming community. I was born in 1931, so I've been around awhile. While my age doesn't help me to answer your question, perhaps I can add a little perspective. My father raised sugar cane as well as sorghum, both of which produced syrup. So syrup was in ready supply. We were active in the Marsden Church, but to my recollection we never had an event called a "syrup soppin' supper". What I recall is the marvelous "Dinner-on-the-Ground" event. Dinner was then the midday meal, so a Dinner-on-the-Ground was a feast laid out on blankets, quilts, and the like after a church service. All the ladies brought some of their best dishes, and there were more cookies than even sweets-starved small boys and girls could eat. Those were the years of the Great Depression, and treats were scarce in almost every household. While I don't recall a syrup soppin' supper, it would have been a great addition to our church's social calendar.
