    3. This article was taken from "Reflections", a column written by Mrs. Lois Newton that appeared in the Eagle Democrat. I thought it was very interesting. "There was a most interesting article about Longview on the Saline River, in a recent Sunday edition of the Arkansas Democrat. Perhaps many of you read it. I enjoyed it especially because fifteen or twenty years ago when I was teaching my seventh-grade Bradley Countians all I could learn about our county's history, and one of my young pupils, a little McNabb girl brought to school a small dog-eared notebook which she had found, among other interesting memoribillia, in an old trunk of her grandmother. This little book was one that Peter Fogle, a Frenchman who had a trading post at Longview, had kept. On one page would be the articles that he had sold to the early settlers of Bradley County and their prices; on the opposite page would be the things that Mr. Fogle had bought from the settlers, such as bear and deer hides, coon and mink pelts, deer antlers, tallow and so on. Over and over again I saw the names of Dr. Cabine or 'Dr. Cabine's slave' in that little book. The things that Dr. Cabine purchased the most were coffee, sugar, powder and lead, and occasionally a bolt of calico or 'linsey-woolsy.' My small pupil let me keep that book overnight, then she took it home. In a very short time the McNabb family moved away and I've never heard any further news of them, but I have thought of that book often, especially now that I have read that article in the Democrat by Glenn Martin and seen the picture of the marker with the Fogle name listed as one of the early settlers of Ashley County. I regret very much that we Bradley Countians do not take greater interest in the County's past. We have let slip away so much priceless history."
