I just finished constructing a map [based loosely on the Sanborn maps] of downtown Warren in 1907 and have a few questions. In the block northeast of the courthouse where the old jail was located, there are only two buildings, one the "calaboose" and the larger building "the jail." I thought jail and calaboose was one and the same. Anyone know why there would be two buildings? Also located at the corner of Walnut and Cedar is a "Negro Baptist Church", but it doesn't give the name of it. Also, does that "little" street right behind the courthouse have a name?? Eagle Dem. Aug 11, 1932: STATEMENT AND AFFIDAVIT OF JOHN C. LEE To My Friends: A rumor has recently been circulated to the effect that during the closing days of the election, I was engaged in buying votes for a certain candidate. To be more specific, the rumor is that on Monday night, the eighth, I spent part of the night driving over the county buying votes. I do not wish to take issue with anyone, and I do not wish to be unfair, but because of this untruthful report and also because of the many unkind criticisms directed to me in the recent campaign, in which I had not part, I feel that my friends are entitled to receive a statement from me; and I therefore make the following affidavit: I, John C. Lee, do hereby state on oath that I have not bought or offered to buy directly or indirectly the vote of any person for any candidate in the recent primary election held on Tuesday, the ninth. I further state that I have circulated no false rumors to benefit or hurt any county candidate, and I still further state that I didn't not travel over the county on the night before the election to buy or attempt to buy the vote of any person, but I didn't go to my brother's house from my home in Warren and when I left there at five AM., I went directly to my farm where I talked to J. C. Dailey, and the next man that I talked to was N. D. Calloway at Hermitage; and on this, the only trip which I made over the county I did not distribute any literature or spread any rumors for or against any county candidate. I also state that I was in Warren, not Ingalls on the night of August 8th, nor was I in Ingalls at any time within two weeks of this date. John C. Lee. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 10th day of August 1932 (SEAL) R. C. Stedman, Notary Public My commission expires Jan. 22, 1934. --------------------------------- Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links.

I'm still trying to pull together all the info. Here it goes: Cone Turner that I believe my husband's family is a descendent of is the son of Henry L. Turner. In H.L Turner's obit, an Annette Turner (grand daughter) was mentioned. It was these papers that made this link. The birth of Cone Turner was 1879, and he married Anna Mae Martin in 1901. I know that their second daugher was born in 1905, so Annette was born before then. I haven't seen any marriage bonds for this marriage. Anna Mae Martin was the daughter of James "ed" martin and the granddaugher of John Wilson Martin. Cone Turner died in 1947.
