    3. The Banks Presbyterian Church was organized Saturday night, February 12, 1898, at Union Hill near Banks. This meeting was moderated by J. D. James. There were four elders present at this meeting to help in the organization, J. R. Tidwell, M. D. Morgan, W. A. Morgan, and J. D. McFarland. Then in August 1905, the Notch Presbyterian Church Church was organized. The Union Hill members came into this new church and together they changed the name of the church to the Banks Presbyterian Church. In four years, 1909, two building committees were appointed to start work on a new church. A. A. Smith gave cypress logs, while other men used log wagons and free labor. Boards for the roof were made under the Sweet Gum trees that still stand at the church. The Methodists and even others have helped through the years to have the church Banks has had. On October 19, 1914, after a revival where four joined the church, a fine Sunday School was organized with all denominations joining in for eight months things went mighty well. The Methodists were mainly responsible for the welfare of the church 1916-1921. They are still a living part of the congregation, some of whom teach Sunday School classes. During the period 1937-1953 things changed, the church becoming a chapel of the Warren First Church. This church did some repairs on the Banks building, hired some seminary students to work there. A number of ministers were temporary supplies, Dr. W. F. Rogers and his son, James, are credited for getting the church on sound footing. How sound may be evidenced by the beginning of a new church on a new location. In January 1965, the Rev. Vernie L. Bartlett became Banks pastor as he shares his services with Calvary Presbyterian Church, Johnsville and Hickory Springs Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church near Hermitage. --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo!
