I am trying to find the exact date of death for my Great Grandmother, Amanda M. Hopper Hunter, so that our family can inscribe a headstone for her currently unmarked grave in McCoy Cemetery, New Edinburg, AR. She was born 02 MAR 1878 to Eli S. Hopper and Margaret Whitting. The only siblings I am aware of are her 3 sisters -- Perilee Hopper Kitchens; Louella Hopper King and Hannah Hopper Turner. Amanda married Evan Hunter on 5 May 1898 at New Edinburg, Cleveland Co., AR. They had 6 children - Floyd L. (died as infant), Grady Curtis, Orie Edward, Lula Bell, Birtie Mae and Wilmar Daniel. We believe she passed away about 1912. If anyone can help, please contact me by email at tew.janet@att.net Janet Hunter Tew

In spite of the gound hog's warning of more winter, people here took advantage of the nice weather last week by doing spring cleaning, planting flowers and preparing for tomato crops. Mrs. Velma Hickman returned home Wednesday from Hot Springs where she spent several days with Mrs. Erma Barudy and children. Thad Godwin of Little Rock now employed by King Motor Co. of Pine Bluff, was in Warren on business Thursday of last week and visited his mother, Mrs. M. Godwin. A hearty welcome to Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Johnson who recently moved from Dallas and settled in our community. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are both employed by Potlatch. Mrs. Byrdie Lee is back on her job with the Carl Savage's after several days illness. Jimmie Baker of North Little Rock called on some friends Saturday while en route to Longview, where a mulligan stew was brewing in the Beasley Camp. Dewey Rogers is working for Boyce Baker in Wilmar. Mr. Baker having reached the age limit, plans to build a new home, retire and live happily ever after. Good luck, Mr. and Mrs. Baker. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Savage were in Little Rock Sunday to visit her sister, Mrs. Perry, who recently had surgery in a Little Rock hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Doggett and Melba Joye visited her sister, Mrs. M. W. Godwin Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. "Reflections" by Lois H. Newton Feb 2, 1966 Your columnist wishes there were some way to have the whistles on diesel engines sound as they used to on the steam locomotives. On a still night and when the wind was right when we lived at New Edinburg, we would hear the Rock Island trains whistling at Tinsman and Banks. Those far away sounds seemed exciting and romantic. There was something unique about those train whistles. People who now dwell in the cities, who hear the roar of trucks and buses and the blare of automobile horns, have missed a great deal, I think. In other days we lived in a more quiet and peaceful environment in the villages and on the farms, and seeing and hearing the big trains was an event for each day. Whether one lived on the lonely prairies or in the rich Delta country, the passing of the train was something to anticipate. We waved at the engineer and he waved back. At night those long, lonesome whooo-whoob-who's seemed to linger in the air. I wonder how many boys and girls have lain their beds and listened to the whistle of a train rushing and hooting though the dark night and dreamed dreams of high adventure. Do little boys of today long to become locomotive engineers? No, I think not. Instead they want to be astronauts or space-men. After our family moved to Warren in 1916 we used to enjoy the music of the log train whistles. I declare Mr. Denny Knickerbocker and the late Mr. Tom Marks could almost make these big train whistles talk. Do you rmember when it was a Sunday pastime to go down and see the Missouri Pacific or the Rock Island trains come in? Do you also remember that horse-drawn bus of Mr. Kight's which met the train? And do you remember those hotel porters calling out "Coker Hotel," "Southerland Hotel?" --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Jann, If you're still writing the history of Bradley Co., this might be of interest to you. (on line, U of A at Fayetteville) Warren Woman's Club Records, Scrapbooks, Pressbooks, and Minutes, 1928-1990 ca. 300 items and 27 volumes, on four reels of microfilm Manuscript Collection 1042 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- a.. Information about the Warren Woman's Club b.. Information about the Collection c.. Contents of the Collection -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INFORMATION ABOUT THE WARREN WOMAN'S CLUB The club was formed September 22, 1916. Named "The Mother's Club," its original purpose was to study child rearing through a five year course based on "Draper's Self Culture," a popular self-study guide of the era. Mrs. J.R. Wilson served as the group's first president, and the organization became a part of the American Federation of Women's Clubs that same year. In 1920 the club's name was changed to "Culture Club" to accommodate members who did not have children. In the fall of 1921, the club awarded its first annual college scholarship. In 1924, however, club members decided their community would derive greater benefit from the funds if they were used to help establish a library. The scholarship funds were diverted to the new project, and the library officially opened on June 15, 1927. One year later, members changed the club's name to "Woman's Club." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLECTION The records of the Warren Woman's Club were loaned to Special Collection for microfilming by Noma Watkins, the club's historian and chair of the Publicity Committee, June 7, 1990, and were returned in October 1990. The records include scrapbooks, pressbooks, minutes, and other records of the club. Also included are some correspondence, awards, material collected for the club's study of contemporary literature, publications of the state and national Federation of Women's Clubs, and early accession registers of the Warren Public Library. The collection was processed by Leon C. Miller and Norma Ortiz-Karp, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in June 1990. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
