Tom, I read your message re: Joseph Arbour, with great interest. My ancestor was also named Joseph Arbour, born about 1760 in Nova Scotia. I have never found evidence of his birthplace or parents, as the records are extremely rare for this period of history. The name Arbour, is an Acadian (Cajun) name, from eastern Canada. Is it possible that your Joseph had Acadian roots, and was expelled from Nova Scotia during the Acadian Expulsion ( 1750 ) by the British? There were many Acadians who ended up in New York, as well as other Eastern States. My Joseph married Amy Ireland, daughter of Loyalist Adam Ireland, and they lived near Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. They were responsible for 18 children, followed by thousands of Arbours until the present age. The spelling of our name has changed twice over the past 200 years - to Arbo, then to Arbeau. Is it possible that your Joseph and mine were related, or the same? Was your Joseph a French Acadian? Are there any archival records for Steuben County, for the 1750 - 1800 period? Thank you, Bob Arbeau / Arbo / Arbour. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <ARBOUR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2011 11:04 PM Subject: [ARBOUR] Steuben County, New York by way of Northumberland,Pennsylvania Arbours > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: ThomasArbour > Surnames: arbour > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.arbour/349/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I'm researching the Arbours that are from the Steuben County, New York > area.
